Facing Lee, Strasburg can keep Phils reeling

     By Mike Fiammetta / MLB.com | 7/29/2012 7:45 PM ET

video thumbnailWSH@MIA: Strasburg fans seven over six shutout frames

By the time Stephen Strasburg takes the mound for the Nationals’ series opener against Cliff Lee and the Phillies on Tuesday night, the non-waiver Trade Deadline will have passed. With Strasburg continuing to pitch under a supposed innings limit for the season, the Deadline figures to provide some clarity as to the makeup of the Nats‘ rotation if — or perhaps when — he is shut down.

Washington reportedly expressed some interest in acquiring Zack Greinke, who was traded from the Brewers to the Angels on Friday. But given the hefty price an ace like Greinke demands near the Deadline, the Nats appear more likely to look within once Strasburg is shut down. At Triple-A Syracuse, the Nationals have depth in the form of John Lannan, who made a strong seven-inning start in a win over the Braves on July 21. The club also has the ability to shuffle around its rotation to limit the need for a fifth starter, setting itself up to be in solid shape for October.

Strasburg, 11-4 with a 2.76 ERA and a Major League-leading 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings, is coming off one of his finest outings of the season. Against the Mets on Wednesday, the 24-year-old right-hander struck out 11 batters, walked none and allowed just one run on four hits in seven innings. His lone mistake was a solo home run by Ike Davis in the second inning. The gem was a welcome bounce-back effort from Strasburg’s previous start, on July 20, when he lasted just 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while taking a no-decision in an 11-10 loss to the Braves.

“He’s still learning to pitch in this league,” Nationals manager Davey Johnson said after Strasburg’s win over the Mets. “He’s got such good stuff and he gets such great publicity, but he’s still a work in progress. He’s a perfectionist. It’s really all about learning about yourself and not trying to be too perfect. And that’s what he did today.”

The Phillies, meanwhile, were sellers instead of buyers at the Deadline and enter the series at Nationals Park trailing the Nats by 16 1/2 games in the National League East. In winning eight of 11 games entering their weekend series with the Braves, the Phillies complicated their Deadline situation, providing a glimmer of hope that they can make a run at the NL Wild Card. But the Braves’ sweep only added to the trade speculation surrounding Phillies veterans Shane Victorino, Joe Blanton and Juan Pierre.

“I think a lot of guys are kind of thrown off by it and trying to figure out why and all that stuff,” Blanton said of the Phillies’ Deadline status. “We’ve won a lot, and all of a sudden you find yourself where you’re at and it kind of makes your mind spin a little bit, and you’re trying to figure out ways to get out of it. Before, we’ve always been on top, so even when you’re not playing good in stretches, you’re still relaxed and playing.”

    Nationals: Zimmerman clicking in July
By virtue of a 2-for-6 afternoon at the plate in Sunday’s 11-10 win in 11 innings over the Brewers, Nats third baseman Ryan Zimmerman enters the final game of July with a .272 batting average, which dipped as low as .218 in late June. Zimmerman has hit .366 and with 24 RBIs in July, becoming a leading candidate for NL Player of the Month honors.

    Phillies: Lee seeks bounce-back effort
Lee is looking for his first win since July 4 and is 1-6 with a 3.95 ERA on the season. In a game against Milwaukee on July 24 that the Phillies won, Lee allowed six runs on 12 hits but took a no-decision after the Phillies pulled out a comeback win.

    Worth noting
    • Tuesday’s game is a matchup of the Nationals’ top Draft pick in 2009, Strasburg, and the Montreal Expos’ third pick in 2000, Lee.

    • The Nationals are coming off their only off-day in a 35-game, 34-day stretch. Washington is 11-7 through the first 17 days of that stretch, which spans from July 13-Aug. 15.

Phils might break up star rotation by dealing Lee

Rangers apparently interested in reacquiring veteran left-hander

    By Todd Zolecki / MLB.com | 07/30/12 6:30 PM ET

     Lee’s six strikeouts00:00:38
7/24/12: Cliff Lee fans six while walking just one over seven innings of work against the Brewers

WASHINGTON — The Phillies are on pace to lose more than 90 games just one season removed from recording a franchise-record 102 victories, so general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and his top lieutenants are incredibly busy in advance of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET non-waiver Trade Deadline.

The Phillies — last place in the NL East with a 45-57 record — said last week they consider themselves “improvers” rather than buyers or sellers, and with a run at the postseason more than a long shot, they would be best served by trading some of their top talent to improve for 2013 and beyond. And some of their efforts, whether fruitful or not, indicate the Phillies are trying to shed payroll to gain flexibility in that department for the future.

Speculation that the Phillies could trade left-hander Cliff Lee started early Monday, with the Rangers considered the most likely destination. But a source told MLB.com late in the afternoon that the chance of a reunion for Lee and Texas is “less than one percent.”

There are reasons for that. Sure, the Rangers have been interested in Lee for weeks, although they preferred Cole Hamels before the lefty signed his six-year, $144 million contract extension last week. Sure, Lee pitched for the Rangers in 2010, so they are familiar with him. Sure, Texas is not one of the teams on Lee’s no-trade list, so the Phillies could send him there without his approval.

But one source said the Rangers would want the Phillies to pick up a chunk of the $87.5 million Lee is owed beginning next season. That would be a trade killer, because if the Phillies deal Lee, they would be doing so in part to clear payroll to fill other holes on their roster. It would be counterproductive to trade one of their biggest talents and then pay him to pitch for another team.

Any Lee deal with any team is full of complications and ramifications, so he isn’t likely to be traded before the Deadline. A much more likely scenario has the club shipping him elsewhere in the offseason.

But the fact the Phillies are shopping Lee and outfielder Hunter Pence, who could make $14 million as a player eligible for salary arbitration next year, indicates the club wants to clear payroll. The Phillies have $123.5 million committed in salary to Lee ($25 million), Roy Halladay ($20 million), Ryan Howard ($20 million), Hamels ($19.5 million), Chase Utley ($15 million), Jonathan Papelbon ($13 million) and Jimmy Rollins ($11 million) next season. Add Pence to that mix, and it’s more than $137 million for eight players.

The Phillies could also clear payroll for this season to fall below the luxury tax threshold by moving right-hander Joe Blanton or outfielders Shane Victorino and Juan Pierre. The three will be free agents after the season, and none is expected back.

That said, the Phillies are not in a total salary-dump mode, so they are not compelled to trade players just to trade them. In other words, they require something of value in return. The Phillies would not get a treasure trove of prospects for Blanton or Pierre, and maybe not even for Victorino. But they want more than warm bodies to fill out their Minor League system.

They want players who can contribute.

The Orioles are heavily interested in Blanton, and a deal could be close. Sources said if the Orioles want the veteran, they can have him. A quality middle reliever could get it done. Several teams have been connected with Victorino, and the Reds appear to be the strongest suitor for Pierre.

Other teams can pop up at the last minute, too. But one thing is certain: The Phillies have multiple ways to improve their roster for 2013. They just have to find the right team willing to give up the right players.

    The clock is ticking.

The One Thing The Phils CanNOT be Doing nowadays or again this year, is is to be losing Series to Teams…Another Loss to ATL…2-1…Early Game Today at 1PM…

Minor major as Braves win fourth straight

Mike Minor allowed only Chase Utley‘s solo homer among four hits over eight innings, striking out nine, backed by RBIs from Chipper Jones and Jason Heyward. Joe Blanton dueled admirably, allowing two runs on four hits, fanning seven, over seven innings.

Phillies’ loss may affect trade-market status

Blanton pitches well, could be dealt if club decides to sell

PHI@ATL: Blanton fans seven over seven strong frames

ATLANTA — The Phillies are making a difficult decision easier for the front office.

They had won eight of their last 11 games, including four consecutive late-inning comeback victories, when they flew to Atlanta late Thursday to open a critical three-game series this weekend against the Braves at Turner Field. But with Tuesday’s Trade Deadline looming, they knew they couldn’t stop winning. They needed to play well this weekend.

    They haven’t.

They have lost the first two games of this series, including Saturday’s 2-1 loss.

That could be enough to push the front office into selling mode, regardless of Sunday’s outcome. The Phillies are 45-56 and 11 1/2 games behind the NL Wild Card leaders, with eight teams ahead of them in the standings. They were 10 games behind the Wild Card leaders at the All-Star break. They have improved their play since, but not enough, losing ground in the standings.

“I’ve been hearing that for so long now, hell, I’ve kind of gotten immune to it,” said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, asked if he fears the two losses to Atlanta could make the Phillies sellers. “How long have I been hearing that?”

    A couple weeks?

    “A couple weeks?” Manuel said.

    A couple months?

“It felt like 10 years,” Manuel said. “It feels like it.”

CSNPhilly.com reported trade talks involving Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino are heating up. He is the most likely player to be traded because the Phillies seem unlikely to offer him a multiyear contract extension.

Joe Blanton and Juan Pierre could be dealt, too.

Blanton, who will become a free agent after the season, improved his stock and could have sealed his fate with another strong performance Saturday. He allowed four hits, two runs, one walk and struck out seven in seven innings. He is 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA in his last three starts, allowing seven earned runs in 23 innings in that span. He has a 3.55 ERA in his last eight starts.

It seems every trade rumor lately has focused on the big arms: Zack Greinke, Ryan Dempster, Josh Johnson, James Shields, etc. But former Phillies general manager Pat Gillick acquired Blanton before the Trade Deadline in July 2008, and it worked out splendidly. Gillick had failed in his pursuit of CC Sabathia, who landed in Milwaukee, but he felt Blanton could stabilize the rotation, which he did.

Blanton picked up a win in Game 4 of the 2008 World Series.

Perhaps there is a team out there that sees Blanton doing the same thing for it. He is not an ace, but he could help its cause.

“Phenomenal,” said Blanton, asked how he would describe his time in Philadelphia if he is traded before the Deadline. “I came, we won the World Series and went back again. We’ve been to the playoffs every time I’ve been here. It’s one of the best places to play. Good fans and everything.”

Roy Halladay pitches the series finale Sunday, which happens to be July 29. That date is noteworthy because, in each of the previous three seasons, the Phillies have made major trades on this day. They acquired Cliff Lee in July 2009, Roy Oswalt in July 2010 and Hunter Pence in July 2011.

It remains to be seen if Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. will follow tradition and make another move on July 29. But this time, if he does, it seems likely he will be sending a player like Victorino or Blanton or Pierre somewhere.

This season has been a confusing one for the Phillies.

“I think a lot of guys are kind of thrown off by it and trying to figure out why and all that stuff,” Blanton said.

This season has been unlike anything Blanton has experienced in Philadelphia, which is why he could be traded before Tuesday’s Deadline.

    Mabrak – The Roots Man

    Mabrak- The Roots Man

Island Stage is celebrating Jamaica 50 and her Artists

    Mabrak

In the beginning the name of the group was GENESIS. GENESIS was the Light. The Light became Lightning. MABRAK is Lightning and Thunder. The Drumming Section of MABRAK won 2 of the 4 medals awarded for drumming in The Jamaica National Drum Music Finals in 1974. They won the National Solo Drum Champion Award and also The National Group Champion Award. They then recorded “DRUM TALK” a Jamaican landmark album at KING TUBBY’S and HARRY J. STUDIOS in Kingston, Jamaica.

This was the first time in the history of recorded music anywhere in the world when the Talking Drum was used as a lead instrument in a song.

The Founder and leader Leroy Mabrak Mattis was responsible for these musical landmarks. He has also developed the World’s First Electric Repeater Drum and functions as a Resource Consultant for Drum Music at Stanford University – Harmony House Dept.

The members of Mabrak are The International Masters of The Roots, Rock, Reggae Sound and have had hits on The British Charts with ITAL TALK/ LIQUID TALK in the mid ’70s. Their recordings are well known in Germany, France and in London. You can also hear them on THE JAMAICA’S GOLDEN HITS, VOL.1 recording doing the gem “OH CAROLINA” – A Jamaican Classic from the 1960′s and on “GREEN ISLAND” which was composed by the late great DON DRUMMOND of THE SKATALITES.

They have won 4 medals for musical composition and arrangement at THE WORLD MUSIC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2003 which was held in Burbank, CA.
They also give lecture demonstrations on Polyphonic Drum arrangements and are Masters of The Repeaters, The West African Talking Drums and The Nyahbinghi Sound.

They also record and perform contemporary Roots, Rock, Reggae Sounds. They grew up with the Legendary TOMMY McCOOK and THE SKATALITES, OSSIE SCOTT and COUNT OSSIE and The MRR. So they are well schooled in first class rootical, cultural and contemporary arrangements.

Leroy Mabrak introduced The Roots of The Reggae & The Nyahbinghi Sound to The United States by bringing COUNT OSSIE & The MRR to perform in Crampton Auditorium, Washington D.C. in 1972. “THE HARDER THEY COME” movie was shown for the historic occasion. This was the premier showing of the movie in the USA and possibly outside of Jamaica.

THE ROOTSMAN CD is their current recording with hits like “The Rootsman”, “Come Sister Come”, “Survival”, “Dis Ya Sound”, “Give Thanks & Praise” and “Jah Love is Forever”.

They have appeared at THE JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS, THE VILLAGE GATE, THE CIRCLE STAR, THE ZELLERBACH AUDITORIUM, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, THE MONTEREY and MOUNT SHASTA REGGAE FESTIVALS to name a few and at The WILLIAMETTE VALLEY FOLK FESTIVAL as a main act in the USA.

They have been headliners at THE STANFORD INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESIVAL 2004, THE BUDWEISER REGGAEFEST 2004 and THE SAN DIEGO WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL 2004. Featured performers in THE TRIBAL STOMP MUSIC FESTIVAL 2007 and Leroy Mabrak gave a command performance on Heroes Night at THE VERANDAH in Kingston, Jamaica in October 2007. Outstanding performers at THE ROOTS & ROCK MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009, BAKERSFIELD, CA. which had 10 stages and 35 bands. Leroy performed with ERNIE RANGLIN at THE CRANEWAY PAILLION in Richmond, CA. in Aug. 2010 and then gave a rootical performance in THE LEGENDARY SHOWCASE billed THE MIGHTY DIAMONDS & MABRAK at THE ASHKENAZ MUSIC CENTER in Berkley, CA. Aug. 2011

In the ’70s they performed throughout Jamaica giving lecture demonstrations on The West African Musical Experience and The Diaspora.

They will rock you with their systematic sound vibrations with their band as Masters of the Roots, Rock, Reggae Sound who are celebrating 35 years of Rootical Reggae Sounds from the land of Jamaica.

Once you see them in concert you will never forget THE THUNDERCLAP SOUNDS of MABRAK……..

Meet The USA Teams….get To Know The Players…

    http://www.nbcolympics.com/team-usa/index.html

    Team USA

What to watch: Olympics day one

We’re definitely not easing into the Olympic Games, we’re diving right in (some would say literally). Saturday brings important medals and match-ups right from the word go. Here’s a list of day one’s can’t miss events.

    Ezra Shaw/Getty Images
    1 of 13
Michael Phelps started his post-Beijing run with a victory over Ryan Lochte in the 200m freestyle at the 2009 U.S. Championships.

Men’s 400m IM Final – The swimming schedulers aren’t messing around as Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte meet up for the first time in arguably the most exciting event on the swimming docket. Phelps swore off the grueling race after Beijing, but now looks to remind pretty boy Lochte, the 400 IM winner at Olympic Trials, who the real king of the pool is.

Women’s 4x100m Freestyle – Swimming darling Missy Franklin will be aiming for her first Olympic medal, while Natalie Coughlin will be going for a record tying twelfth when they dive in for the 4x100m freestyle Saturday night. The U.S. women were second to the Dutch at worlds last year, but Franklin is a year stronger. The team has a great shot at gold.

Women’s Beach Volleyball – Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings begin competing for their third straight Olympic gold at the famous Horse Guards Parade. They’re no longer the unequaled queens of the beach and will have an uphill battle against Brazilians Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Silva. First up for the Americans: a date with Australians Natalie Cook and Tamsin Hinchley.

Women’s 10m Air Rifle Final – The very first gold of the London Olympics will be awarded Saturday morning at the Royal Artillery Barracks, nicknamed “Teletubby Land” for its bright colors and bulbous design. Malaysian shooter Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi, admittedly a long shot for a medal, will take aim while eight months pregnant.

Men’s Cycling Road Race – Mark Cavendish hopes to win the home team’s first gold, as he and his team ride a course tailor made for Cav’s aggressive sprinting style. Taylor Phinney and the Americans will have something to say about that as they look to upset the strong British team that includes 2012 Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins.

Men’s Gymnastics Qualifying – Danell Leyva, John Orozco, and Jonathan Horton will being their quest toward the first gold for the U.S. men’s team since the boycotted 1984 Games when they compete in qualifying Saturday night. Their toughest competitors will be Japan and China, who took gold in team, all-around, and five of the six apparatuses in Beijing.

Follow Olympic Talk for all the latest on the London Games.

NBC’s Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines take a look at what’s in store for the Michael Phelps vs. Ryan Lochte rivalry in London, as well as for American upstart Missy Franklin.

Hanson’s Third Olympic Games….before the upcoming Dual in The Pool…First Phelps vs. Lochte duel on tap in London

Ryan Lochte tops Michael Phelps in their first showdown at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in the men’s 400m IM. Both men qualified for London in the event.

LONDON – The men’s 400m individual medley on Saturday has been tagged as one of the most exciting events of the London Games because it features the much anticipated showdown between Michael Phelpsand Ryan Lochte. And while Phelps and Lochte have swum against each other hundreds of times, this race is different.

The London Olympics have become the perfect battleground for arguably the two best swimmers of all-time, and it seems fitting that they first clash in the sport’s most grueling event.

Phelps is the two-time reigning Olympic champion, but Lochte won the event at the 2009 and 2011 world championships. This may in part have been because after his eight-gold-medal performance in Beijing, Phelps swore off the 400m IM. Apparently though, letting Lochte skate away with the Olympic title in London did not sit too well with Phelps, and in the past few months he decided to throw his hat back in the mix.

“I started watching video of [the 400m IM] whether it was 2004 or 2008, and it just brought back this excitement and I kind of wanted to give it a shot and see what would happen,” said Phelps.

The difference is that Lochte has been training four years for this event, while Phelps has admitted to being a bit too lackadaisical in the pool through 2011.

“It’s not going to be easy,” said Phelps on Thursday. “It’s going to be a lot more painful this time around than it was four years ago, I’ll tell you that.”

Phelps’ prediction already proved true on Saturday morning as he came unexpectedly close to missing finals, squeaking in by a mere 0.07 seconds. That means instead of racing side-by-side in the middle of the pool, as the two have grown accustom to, Phelps will be out in lane 8, while Lochte is in lane 3 on Saturday night.

“The only thing that matters is just getting a spot in [the final],” said Phelps. “You can’t win the gold medal from the morning.”

Even though the two will be on opposite sides of the pool, there is no doubt that they will be keeping tabs on one another.

In the face of this great showdown, Lochte is focused on deflecting attention away from the rivalry, and instead looks forward to racing as he has always done. “If Michael is right there with me, then he’s right there with me,” added Lochte.

If past Olympic performance is any indication, Phelps will be.

Lochte’s coach Gregg Troy summed it up best, saying, “[he] doesn’t need to worry, Michael will be right there.”

As will we – watching with great anticipation.

Join Sen. Whitehouse to discuss our fight to take back Democracy and reverse Citizens United — Tuesday (July 31) at 12pm EST!

    Reportback: Disclose Act

Too often, Republicans call themselves “moderate” back home while supporting an extreme agenda in DC.

That’s why we pushed for a vote on the Disclose Act last week, which exposed that every Republican senator supports the big corporations and billionaires trying to buy our democracy with secret dollars.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) is a rising progressive star who worked with us as he led this fight. On Tuesday, he’ll join us for a national briefing about the Disclose Act and overturning Citizens United – and answer our questions!

Or click here to sign on as a supporter of our Take Back Democracy campaign.

Taking back our democracy is a marathon, not a sprint — and it is important to understand the strategy behind last week’s Disclose Act effort. Progressives gave Republicans a choice: Vote with your constituents or face public shaming back home.

As part of this strategy, Republicans were forced by Senator Whitehouse to take the same vote two days in a row. Meanwhile, we ran online ads that were seen 600,000 times in their home states. And over 35,000 PCCC members got involved in this fight, made 2,000 calls to Senate offices, and tweeted local reporters asking them to cover this issue.

As a result, supposedly “moderate” Republican senators like Scott Brown, Olympia Snowe, and Susan Collins were exposed in local headlines – highlighting to voters that they support the buying of our democracy.

Join Sen. Whitehouse to discuss our fight to take back Democracy and reverse Citizens United — Tuesday (July 31) at 12pm EST! Sign up to join by phone or online.

Britain stages a spectacular welcome for the world

In this clip from the London Olympics Opening Ceremony, we see a trio of rocket men take flight in the Olympic Stadium.

LONDON (AP) The queen and James Bond gave the London Olympics a royal entrance like no other Friday in an opening ceremony that rolled to the rock of the Beatles, the Stones and The Who.

And the creative genius of filmaker Danny Boyle wove it all together.

    Stunning. Cheeky, too.

The highlight of the Oscar-winning director’s $42 million show was pure movie magic, using trickery to make it seem that Britain’s beloved 86-year-old Queen Elizabeth II had parachuted into the stadium with film’s most famous spy.

A short film showed 007 driving up to Buckingham Palace in a black London cab and, pursued by the royal dogs, meeting the queen, who played herself.

“Good evening, Mr. Bond,” she said.

They were shown getting into a helicopter _ she in a melon-colored gown, he in a black tuxedo _ that flew them over London landmarks to the stadium, where they jumped out into the inky night.

At the same moment, real skydivers appeared in the skies over the stadium. And moments after that, the monarch appeared in person, accompanied by her husband Prince Philip.

Elizabeth stood solemnly while a children’s choir serenaded her with “God Save the Queen,” and members of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force raised the Union Jack.

Much of the opening ceremony was an encyclopedic review of British music history, from a 1918 Broadway standard adopted by the West Ham soccer team to the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” by still another Queen.

The evening started with fighter jets streaming red, white and blue smoke and roaring over the stadium, packed with a buzzing crowd of 60,000 people, at 8:12 p.m. _ or 20:12 in the 24-hour time observed by Britons.

An explosion of fireworks against the London skyline and Paul McCartney leading a singalong were to wrap up the three-hour opening ceremony masterminded by one of Britain’s most successful filmmakers.

Boyle, the director of “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Trainspotting,” had a ball with his favored medium, mixing filmed passages with live action in the stadium to hypnotic effect, with 15,000 volunteers taking part in the show.

Actor Rowan Atkinson as “Mr. Bean” provided laughs, shown dreaming that he was appearing in “Chariots of Fire,” the inspiring story of a Scotsman and an Englishman at the 1924 Paris Games.

There was a high-speed flyover of the Thames, the river that winds like a vein through London and was the gateway for the city’s rise over the centuries as a great global hub of trade and industry.

Headlong rushes of images took spectators on wondrous, heart-racing voyages through everything British: a cricket match, the London Tube and the roaring, abundant seas that buffet and protect this island nation.

A pulsating soundtrack including snippets of the Sex Pistols’ version of “God Save the Queen” _ an anti-establishment punk anthem once banned by the BBC.

To open the ceremony, children popped balloons with each number from 10 to 1, leading a countdown that climaxed with Bradley Wiggins, the newly crowned Tour de France champion. Wearing his race-winner’s yellow jersey, Wiggins rang a 23-ton Olympic Bell from the same London foundry that made Big Ben and Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell.

Its thunderous chime echoed around the 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium. Bells in Britain have traditionally pealed to celebrate the end of war and the crowning of kings and queens, and now for the opening of a 17-day festival of sports.

The show then shifted to a portrayal of Britain that Britons cling to _ a place of meadows, farms, sport on village greens, picnics and Winnie-the-Pooh, A.A. Milne’s bear who has delighted generations of British children tucked warmly in bed.

But the British ideal _ to quote poet William Blake, of “England’s green and pleasant land” _ then took a darker, grittier turn.

The set was literally torn asunder, the hedgerows and farm fences carried away, as Boyle shifted to the industrial transformation that revolutionized Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, the foundation for an empire that reshaped world history. Belching chimneys rose where only moments earlier sheep had trod.

The Industrial Revolution also produced terrifying weapons, and Boyle built a moment of hush into his show to honor those killed in war.

“This is not specific to a country; this is across all countries, and the fallen from all countries are celebrated and remembered,” he explained to reporters ahead of the ceremony.

“Because, obviously, one of the penalties of this incredible force of change that happened in a hundred years was the industrialization of war, and the fallen,” he said. “You know, millions fell.”

Olympic organizers separately rejected calls for a moment of silence for 11 Israeli athletes and coaches slain by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Two of the Israelis’ widows appealed to audience members to stand in silence when International Olympic Committee chief Jacques Rogge rose to speak later at Friday’s ceremony. The Israeli culture and sport minister planned to do just that.

The parade of nations featured most of the roughly 10,500 athletes _ some planned to stay away to save their strength for competition _ marching behind the flags of the 204 nations taking part.

Greece had the lead, as the spiritual home of the games, and Team Great Britain was last, as the host. The tradition of athletes marching into the stadium by nation at the opening ceremony began at London’s first Olympics, in 1908.

Both Bahrain and Brunei featured female flagbearers in what has been called the Olympics’ Year of the Woman. For the first time at the games, each national delegation includes women, and a record 45 percent of the athletes are women.

It fell to the queen to declare the games open. Last month, the nation put on a festive Diamond Jubilee _ a small test run for the games _ to mark her 60 years on the throne, a reign that began shortly after London’s last Olympics, in 1948.

The Olympic cauldron was to be lit with a flame that was kindled May 10, at the birthplace of the ancient Olympics in Greece, from a reflection of the sun’s rays off a mirror.

Since then, 8,000 torchbearers, mostly unheralded Britons, have carried the flame on a 70-day, 8,000-mile journey from toe to tip of the British Isles, whipping up enthusiasm for a $14 billion Olympics taking place during a severe recession.

The identity of the last torchbearer, the one to light the cauldron, was kept secret _ remarkable given the intense scrutiny at what have been called the first social media Olympics.

Speculation focused on Roger Bannister, the first man to run a four-minute mile, in 1954, and on rower Steve Redgrave, among others.

The show’s lighter moments included puppets drawn from British children’s literature _ Captain Hook from “Peter Pan,” Cruella de Vil from “101 Dalmations” and Lord Voldemort from J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series, as well as Mary Poppins.

Their appearance had a serious message, too _ the importance of literacy.

“If you can read and write, you’re free, or you can fight for your freedom,” Boyle said.

The director of “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Trainspotting” also laced the show with snippets from British cinema, including actor Daniel Craig as James Bond, and the spine-tingling soundtrack to “Chariots of Fire.

Boyle’s show took the expected global television audience of 1 billion on a rich and textured journey through British history.

His challenge was daunting: To be as memorable as Beijing’s incredible, money-no-object opening ceremony of 2008, the costliest in Olympic history.

“Beijing is something that, in a way, was great to follow,” Boyle said. “You can’t get bigger than Beijing, you know? So that, in a way, kind of liberated us. We thought, ‘Great, OK, good, we’ll try and do something different.’”

Boyle drew from Shakespeare, British pop culture, literature and music, and other sources of inspiration that will speak to _ and perhaps at times baffle _ not just Anglophiles but people across the globe.

It was Rogge’s last time as president of the International Olympic Committee to watch the Olympic flag being raised at an opening ceremony. He will step down in 2013 after completing the maximum two terms.

Besides the thousands of athletes and performers, 60,000 spectators were expected to pack Olympic Stadium.

Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate for president, planned to attend the ceremony with his wife, Ann. Romney caused a stir in Britain by suggesting earlier this week that the country had “disconcerting” problems preparing for the games.

Other political leaders from around the world, U.S. first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters, and a sprinkling of European and celebrity royalty were also attending.

Two (2) Hours until the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Olympics on all NBC Stations (I Think all of em…)

Party in London: Let the Games begin

By: Alan Abrahamson, NBC OlympicsUPDATED: Jul 27, 11:44a ET

Welcome to the 2012 Olympic host city, a place of rich tradition and culture that has the honor of being the first city to ever host the Games three times.

LONDON — The 2004 Summer Games in Athens marked a return to the roots.

The 2008 Olympics in Beijing took the Games to the world’s most populous nation.

Enough already with the solemnity and the weight of history.

These 2012 Summer Olympics — they’re supposed to be a party.

    1 of 114

Ask anyone their favorite Summer Games and, almost without exception, virtually without hesitation, the answer is the same — Sydney in 2000.

The city was alive and vibrant; crowds jammed the so-called “live sites”; the place was awash in goodwill and Olympic spirit.

That’s what organizers have always intended for London to be. Only bigger and better.

London will be the first city to play host to the Games for a third time. They held the Games here in 1908 and, to a world weary from war, in 1948.

In 2012, these will be fascinating Games because they will be the first social media Olympics. Every incident — no matter how small — will seem big, at least momentarily, because it will be an event on Twitter. Plus, this is a healthy democracy and the British press is, to use London 2012 chair Sebastian Coe’s phrase, “forensic” in its examination of, well, everything.

That said, the seven-year run-up to these Olympics has been remarkably smooth. The venues got built, and on time. For all the breathless reporting in the press here about ticketing problems — the underlying problem was that more people wanted tickets than organizers had tickets available.

Already, there are multiple after-Games plans for the stadiums and other buildings.

As Denis Oswald, the chief International Olympic Committee watchdog, said in his final report this week, “The London Games remain an example of the vision not being changed. It wasn’t just a sales pitch. It’s a spectacular illustration of the Games to change peoples’ lives and change the face of the city.

“Of all the recent host cities, London can claim to be the one that has done the most to ensure its venues and facilities do not turn into white elephants after the Games.”

The security overlay in London — the cause for most concern now, budget and otherwise — will necessarily be different than in Sydney. We have all lived through 9/11 and the attack here in July 2005 just hours after London was awarded these 2012 Games.

Yet — it has been clear from the get-go that London isn’t out to prove to the rest of the world that it belongs (doesn’t need to) or has a special place in history (same). London is the world’s gathering place, easily accessible from everywhere. Everyone comes here. Always has. Always will.

And when they do — especially now that the food in England is way past bangers-and-mash and is really, really good — what’s the most logical thing to do?

    Have fun. Big fun.

You could see it in the double-decker bus, with David Beckham kicking a soccer ball on the roof, that marked the send-off at closing ceremony in Beijing.

And you’ll see it again at the opening ceremony. When, if reports are to be believed, Mary Poppins squares off against Lord Voldemort.

And — for sure, when Paul McCartney sings “Hey, Jude.” He’s due to ask everyone, all 60,000 people in the stadium, to sing along. That’s how the opening ceremony will close — and how this party is going to get started.

Back injury forces Polanco to disabled list

    Polanco’s barehanded grab00:00:35
7/20/12: Placido Polanco makes a barehanded grab and a strong throw to get the out at first

PHILADELPHIA — This came as no surprise for the Phillies.

The Phils placed Placido Polanco on the 15-day disabled list Thursday afternoon with what they called lower back inflammation. The move was retroactive to Monday, which means Polanco will be eligible to be activated as early as Aug. 7.

The Phillies announced they will make a corresponding move to replace Polanco, who had a MRI exam Tuesday, on the 25-man roster before Friday’s game in Atlanta.

Polanco is hitting .255 with two home runs, 19 RBIs and a .628 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, which is 119 points below his career average. Since raising his average to a season-high .294 on June 4, Polanco has hit just .184 with eight RBIs and a .494 OPS.

But the Phils will miss Polanco while he is out because he remains a solid defensive third baseman. Ty Wigginton has played the past three games at third base and has committed three errors, including two in Wednesday’s 7-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park.

Guy in Romney ad received MILLIONS in government money.
    By ireporttwo  |  Posted July 24, 2012

Wow. Romney campaign still using Obama‘s speech out of context. Owner of

Gilchrist Metal says basically that that he built his business and not the government. Now it seems as if the guy has received millions for his business.

Shouldn’t things like this be investigated before a whole commercial is made. Geez

    From the article

And, as it turns out, Jack Gilchrist is no different. The New Hampshire Union Leader reports today that Gilchrist benefited from millions of dollars of government loans and contracts to get his business on its feet:

In 1999, Gilchrist Metal received $800,000 in tax-exempt revenue bonds issued by the New Hampshire Business Finance Authority ?to set up a second manufacturing plant and purchase equipment to produce high definition television broadcasting equipment,? according to a New Hampshire Union Leader report at the time…

Last year, Gilchrist Metal also received two U.S. Navy sub-contracts totaling about $83,000 and a smaller $5,600 Coast Guard contract in 2008, according to a government web site that tracks spending.

Gilchrist wisely took advantage of these funds, which help small businesses like his survive in their early years. He also took a U.S. Small Business Administration loan in the late 1980s totaling ?somewhere south of? $500,000, plus matching funds from the federally-funded New England Trade Adjustment Assistance Center.

Holy cow, the Senate actually PASSED something! Something good!

    Don,

Holy cow, the Senate actually PASSED something! Something good!

Yesterday, the Senate voted 51 to 48 to end the Bush tax cuts for incomes over $250,000 — the richest 2%. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand voted yes. Every Republican voted no.

Can you call Schumer and Gillibrand and thank them for voting yes on this important bill? Click here for the number and a script.

Most good bills don’t pass the Senate these days because Republicans filibuster everything – requiring 60 votes, instead of the constitutional 51 votes.

But this time it actually passed!

Republicans didn’t filibuster for two reasons. First, they thought Democrats would lack unity and wouldn’t muster the votes. That was wrong, thanks to senators like Schumer and Gillibrand. Second, Republicans wanted to get Democrats “on the record” — as if taxing the top 2% were a bad thing!

(That’s how out-of-touch they are! Poll after poll shows this vote is overwhelmingly popular.)

People back home need to hear about Senate Democrats’ great vote. Their strength and unity deserve to be rewarded!

Can you take 30 seconds to call Schumer and Gillibrand and thank them today? Click here for the number and a script.

Thanks for being a bold progressive.

Senate Votes to End Tax Breaks

The Senate on Wednesday voted 51 to 48 to extend tax cuts for most working Americans and end Bush-era tax breaks in 2013 for individuals making more than $200,000 a year and couples earning at least $250,000. “With a $16 trillion national debt and a $1 trillion deficit, we cannot continue to give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said after the vote. “This is a step forward in ending the Bush-era tax breaks for the rich and asking the wealthiest Americans, who are doing phenomenally well, to do their fair share to bring down deficits. I hope our Republican friends in the House can overcome their support for tax breaks for the wealthy and support this common-sense approach to cutting deficits.”

Im reaching here after this Audit bill got through the house…so with that said today…lets be real now for us liberals….because dudes….the Keystone pipeline is another way to plunder our earth, in the dumbest ways which is redundant to saying its plundering into our planet:

    Friends-

    Keystone XL issue is back.

In fact, it never left. Big oil has been trying everything to get this pipeline built, ever since President Obama temporarily rejected it earlier this year.

The Keystone pipeline is a critical link to the Canadian tar sands, North America’s largest pool of carbon — which if developed would mean ‘essentially game over’ for the climate, according to NASA’s top scientist Dr. James Hansen.

Last year the climate movement organized to stop the pipeline, and forced TransCanada to extreme measures: they broke the pipeline in two, moving forward with the southern half, which doesn’t require Presidential approval, and re-submitting the Northern half, which includes the critical link to the tar sands.

Folks along the Southern leg are gearing up for some extraordinary direct actions to stop construction when it begins later this summer. The fate of the Northern leg is still unknown – though to be honest, the signs aren’t very encouraging.

Last fall President Obama promised to consider the climate impacts of the pipeline on any re-review. It’s not clear if that promise will be kept. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the folks at the State Department will make up their minds next week about whether to consider the climate impacts of Keystone XL in their review of the pipeline.

Keystone XL would open the floodgates for tar sands oil, sending 800,000 barrels a day of the dirtiest oil on earth to be exported, creating an enormous carbon footprint. 10 top scientists already sent a letter to State insisting the climate impacts be considered - can you join them and send a message to Sec. Clinton to demand that they consider climate change when reviewing Keystone XL?

Click here to send a message to the State Department: act.350.org/letter/keystone-state-climate/

Your comment will be automatically submitted to the Department from our site, but we will also be doing a bulk delivery with our allies in DC next week to help underline how many people want to see this pipeline stopped.

Today is also the 2nd anniversary of the largest tar sands spill in American history, which took place on the Kalamazoo river in Michigan. With that as warning, State must undertake a comprehensive, high-scrutiny review of every aspect of the pipeline.

Keystone is the key to unlocking new tar sands production. Planned pipelines heading West and East from the tar sands have run into major opposition, leaving Keystone as one of the last options to export tar sands.

That means the Sec. Clinton’s decision will be the key to whether we see substantial expansion of the tar sands in the near term.

And if the tar sands indeed do mean ‘essentially game over’ for the climate… well, that seems like something worth thinking about.

If you agree, click here to send a message to Sec. of State Clinton and the State Department.

Keystone XL is both a symbol and a stepping stone for the work we’re going to do to change the way the fossil fuel industry works. Ensuring the President keeps his word builds critical momentum for all of our organizing to take on the industry overall, beginning by taking away their massive subsidies. If you’ve read Bill McKibben‘s latest in Rolling Stone, it’s very clear why we have to keep the good energy we built from fighting Keystone going — simply put, we are in the fight of our lives.

Once again, the odds, and the money of the fossil fuel industry are both against us. We’ve beaten both before and we’ll need to again.

    -Duncan

PS – If you haven’t yet, take a few minutes to read Bill’s article in Rolling Stone. He says it’s the most important thing he’s written in 23 years, and it’s quite clear why: it explains in the starkest possible terms how close we are to losing the fight for the future of our planet, and what we need to do if we hope to turn things around. Early Game in Philly Starts In A Half An Hour Today….Phillies out to sweep reeling Brewers

Phillies out to sweep reeling Brewers

     By Trey Scott / MLB.com | 7/24/2012 11:22 PM ET

    video thumbnail

    PIT@MIL: Estrada strikes out 11 Pirates over 5 2/3

Wednesday afternoon’s series finale between the Brewers and Phillies, who will go for a three-game sweep of Milwaukee at Citizens Bank Park, features two pitchers who came undone in their previous starts.

Take Vance Worley of the Phillies, who retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced, striking out seven, before allowing eight of the final 13 batters to reach in a loss to the Giants on Friday.

“I missed my spots,” said Worley, who gave up a sixth-inning grand slam.

In that start, Worley surrendered six runs on six hits in six innings, while issuing three walks, to tie a season high for most runs allowed.

On the other side, the Brewers’ Marco Estrada has not surrendered more than three runs in any of his last four starts — with 45 strikeouts — but has yet to win this season.

Estrada’s last start, on Friday, was marred by the long ball: he gave up three solo shots to the Reds, and two in one inning.

“The focus should always be there,” Estrada said. “There’s no excuse to lose focus.”

Phillies: Pence wants to stay put
The Phils are reportedly eager to trade outfielder Hunter Pence, which would save about $14 million in 2013 payroll. Pence, however, would like to remain with the club.

“I want to play here,” Pence said. “I want to win this year. I believe in us, and that’s what I’m focused on. I’m not focused on what if something happens in the future. What if I die tomorrow? I’m not guaranteed another breath, so I’m going to go out and work as hard as I can today.”

Brewers: Axford working way back toward closer role
John Axford didn’t get a chance to close out Tuesday’s game, as the Brewers lost, but the plan is that the righty — removed from the closer role July 17 — will eventually return to the ninth-inning spot.

“When we get Ax to where we think he’s back to where he was, we’ll slide him back in that role,” said manager Ron Roenicke.

    Worth noting
    • Milwaukee’s bullpen blew a 6-1 lead against the Phillies on Tuesday night to hand the Brewers their fifth straight loss, 7-6.

    • Philadelphia has won three of four series since the All-Star break.

I just heard Tom Ridge say that the old admin (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc.) set the tone for today’s admin’s (Obama, Hilary, etc.) positive foreign policy efforts…

In a sense I guess…..Becuase that admin had the worlds worst foreign policy ever…they allowed however many people…to hi jack however many planes…to fly them into buildings in our nations capital, maybe CHI and into our largest citys’ two tallest buildings….

Plus, they had bin laden dead in the sites of dalton Fuery (read Kill Bin Laden) and he was not allowed to kill him…

ok…so maybe by fucking up things, they had to fix em, and in a sense made them better….but to say that admin did anything but screw up this country, is an amazing lie. I cannot believe the RNC is just going to lie as way to try to win this year. no one that cares about the USA, can allow that to happen in any election. I am over the cheating to win. I hate the electoral system but thats a story in itself, and, even that banner willard uses this week, is based on a huge lie. Obama never said that sentence that way.

And, also, I am not dem. I voted one time that way, and it was to get the last regime or admin or whatever, out of that WH.

If anyone thinks that Willard is different, than that the entire admin, and if anyone does not think that Willard, and use him as a metaphor if that makes sense, or if it can be done in our grammar, is part of the problem we face and have faced in this country, they/you are clueless wonders….

Besides, do you really think it would have been in that old admins VP’s best interest, if Halliburton were NOT allowed to re build everything he ordered to be knocked down in the first place? So to speak that is because they (haliburton built the barracks..did the plumbing, built the buildings after they crumbled them because of our bombs)….meaning..Halliburton…Cheney’s company that he was head and was / is a current stock holder, had its profits soar all of these years while his admin had  us at war…while america crumbled too, to I think what is 70 some Trillion dollars in mother fricking debt….No wonder that guy has had 9 heart attacks in his corrupt life….

as far as the tax shelters and all that stuff…we get that’s its legal, etc…i don’t really know too many presidents that had those types of accounts and / or that have had company’s in other countries legally placed in their wives names, etc…The problem to me, is that it was just done a time when the USA faced the “financial abyss” if you dont mind me using that cliche made up by the politicians and media people…Kind of like Bad Apples and kicking the can down the road and we have financial cliff now too….sorry….the point is that it was not a good time to scam america and its people…I am sorry to say it but call it what you want in life…A real american would pay their taxes and not only pay them, but would also be proud to kick down in many ways.

oh and also…that super pac ad put out today by some obama backer…looks like a skit…i thought the morning joe producers were showing a scene from last nights fallon or letterman show or kimmel show…Maybe its effective in those swing states….

i guess whats going on this election this year, is that the RNC will just lie..and then obama has to rebut it for a few days/…Actually, that is a great way to waste days…That way no one would talk about ronmeys weak record on every level…and his lies…

Honestly, I cant even blame that guy for his lies…he does NOT even know what he is going to say or believe ever…let alone that minute…everything he says is a farce…he says everything and does everything in this bad calculated way…Remember too…he fumbles around with his words and convictions if you will, because he has to upkeep all of those lies…Its gotta be hard to remember them….

….its crazy….its annoying…its wasting my time that i could be working, but instead..i am writing this note or rant about overstating the obvious in politics….It is  just like I was during that last primary…I totally forgot about the ship of fools in place today….what the fuck ever…we dead heads by the way…knew we were going to hell in a bucket babe…back in 87…..I just thought we the people have become smarter or more worldly although in defense of that comment…or what is my opnion thats a generalization….im basing my anger maybe, off that fringe element…its maddening….I dont get it…there is no logic and its not normal….i dont know if its still effective to lie and see where it lands…

and, then the hypocrisy which is a form of a lie BTW…is just nuts…to say that last admin did anything but suck at foreign policy is a lie…they failed miserably…not since pearl harbor have we been attacked on our land…thats a great job? How that hell do you spin that instance to being a positive for the bush people?

Oh wait..wait…lets get into the WMD’s..Because think about it too, whether it was lie…or based on dumb asses that got wrong info…its bad foreign policy…Plus, to have people fly planes into building while you are in the office, is not good foreign policy considering the people that did it, were all from over seas….and then setting up no bid contracts…with the VPs very own company…for it to make record profits with record profit margins…for that work…is horrifying foreign policy….To have had Bin Laden in whom is referred to as Dalton Fuerys rifle range and less than 1500 or whatever feet from him…and for him not to be allowed to get that approval to pull the trigger then, to nail bin laden then, is very bad foreign policy….

I will say though, that last admin…did wonders to revitalize the lost and ruined poppy fields in afghnistan, etc…because now…we can get those heroin derivatives like oxys and whatnot…way cheaper than before 9/11…Who knows…maybe the conspiracy people, should entertain whether 9/11…and all these wars…are a way to control the drug trade…i am not saying it so dont think I am planting that seed…no pun intended…..

Conversely, obama nailed bin laden with some loss (helicopter, etc.), but he dealt with it…he nailed the pirates…and I am not getting into it because look at the middle east over the last few years…these guys have had to control a crazy situation in like 6 countries now…that last admin would let everything go…and their way of dealing (ask dr. Bryzienski) is old way to deal….and borderline a utopia way to think about how to deal with our foreign policy….in the sense that that we change everyone to be like us…..But, also hilary seems like she has done a great job in this admin…picking up the pieces from the mess left behind by the last admin’s foreign policy effort…is not an easy process for them…

And, then you hear Willard talk about his plan for afghanistan which is a joke…and basically McCains speech…and not what he said ever before…hes being coached and you cant believe his word…let alone any of his conviction…except to make as much money as possible for himself, and by using any means to gains those monies or profits….

Amid trade rumors, Greinke takes on Lee, Phils

PHI@LAD: Lee stellar over eight innings vs. Dodgers

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke knows right-hander Zack Greinke is likely distracted by the trade rumors that have been surrounding him as the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline approaches.

He just hopes that by first pitch on Tuesday, when Greinke returns to the mound after missing his last scheduled start to “recharge his batteries,” the 28-year-old right-hander can focus on his opponent, the Phillies, as Milwaukee looks to get back on track after suffering a fourth straight loss on Monday.

“Hopefully everything’s back to normal with him,” Roenicke said. “I know it can’t be 100 percent because of what’s going on with all the talks and trade rumors. … So I’m hoping mentally because he prepares so well, I’m hoping he goes into this game like himself, where he’s locked in to what he needs to do and he blocks out everything else.”

Greinke went through a bullpen session on Sunday that Roenicke said was “really good.” Tuesday will mark Greinke’s first start in 11 days. Prior to that, he took the ball for the Brewers in three straight games — two before the All-Star Game because he was thrown out of the first and one after the break.

That left Greinke worn out, but Roenicke said all indications are that the right-hander is ready to take his 9-3 record into Citizens Bank Park and get back to work.

“In our discussions when he stops by and talks to me, whether it’s in [batting practice] or my office or whatever, have been good,” Roenicke said. “Lately, he feels good about trying to get back in his routine and with the bullpen [session Sunday].”

Pitching against Greinke, Cliff Lee will take the hill for the Phillies on Tuesday. Just 1-6, Lee likely hopes he can deliver a start similar to his last one, but with a better final result. Lee pitched eight innings while only giving up one run on two hits and a walk Wednesday against the Dodgers. However, Philadelphia lost, 5-3.

In his career, Lee has played against 29 different teams, and Milwaukee is the only one he has not beaten. He is 0-1 with a 4.74 ERA, allowing 23 hits in the three games against the Brewers.

Phillies: Polanco misses game with back stiffness
Placido Polanco did not play in Monday’s win over the Brewers because of stiffness in his lower back, and with the severity of the injury unclear, he could miss Tuesday’s game as well.

The stiffness had bothered Polanco for a few days, and he was scheduled to see team physician Michael Ciccotti. Polanco is 36 and went on the disabled list last season with lower back inflammation. This year, he hasn’t gone on the DL, but he’s missed time with wrist and ankle injuries.

“The last couple years, it’s been tough for him to stay on the field,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “Polly used to be a guy that was set on playing every day. I’m sure when he’s hurting and he can’t play, it bothers him.”

Polanco, who is hitting .255 with two home runs and 19 RBIs on the season, has had a rough go of it, going 6-for-49 (.122) and one RBI since his last multi-hit game on June 29.

“Every now and then when he does hit a ball hard it seems like somebody catches it,” Manuel said. “It seems like he’s always having to beat something out. He hasn’t been getting a lot of hits. At times, he puts the fat part of that bat on the ball still.”

    Brewers: Axford succeeding new role
Although Milwaukee’s bullpen blew its 17th save Monday, John Axford might finally be solving his own issues.

Axford, who was removed as closer following his sixth blown save on July 16, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings on Monday against the Phillies. He didn’t surrender a hit after inheriting two baserunners, striking out one.

In the four appearances since his last blown save, Axford has allowed just two hits and left all six of his inherited runners stranded. He earned his third win of the season Wednesday and said after that he felt good.

“I just tried to escape everything that happened before,” Axford said. “Obviously, a short-term memory is a good thing. I tried to work fast and not let anything have an opportunity to creep into my head.”

    Worth noting
    • Monday’s loss dropped the Brewers to 10-20 all time at Citizens Bank Park.
