Taji Update Today
After a five day stretch of slaughter free days in Taiji, the killing cove was transformed to red as 10 gentle Risso’s dolphins were killed for human consumption.
Shortly after 7:00am, the killers found the pod. The pod fought and resisted the efforts of the killers to drive them from their home in the ocean to the shallow rocky confines of the killing cove. Many times the killers would scramble to chase after the pod in desperate attempts to remain free. For a usually gentle controllable species, the pod had lost their battle as the banging poles and slap paddles fell silent as the pod was netted within the cove at 11:00am.
As the pod was further herded under tarps by skiffs and terrorised by outboard engines, loud thrashing and hammering of metal rods into the spinal column could be heard, this is known as pithing. At that time, the slaughter had commenced under the cover of the tarps. The tarps did not conceal these sounds of torture as killers shouted orders and laughed whilst the dolphins thrashed in their final moments.
Within the hour, the entire pod of 10 dolphins including juveniles was brutally killed. The lifeless bodies of these gentle dolphins had one final trip in the ocean as they passed the heads of the Taiji Harbour and entered the doors of the butcher house. These dolphins now exist as slabs of meat for sale on the open market.
