    Planned Parenthood (Photo credit: WeNews)

This was about the time last year when Planned Parenthood and susan komen had their thing start up fiercely and it was about the time I realized that I was in my own so called bubble…I just did not know people cared about abortion today and woman’s rights if you will…which tend to all be about birth control, etc…I did not know they were issues today…so to speak….and then we had an entire primary and an election based with that as the focal points…it was wild to me and so I guess i need to be heard…this thing here, the sustainable action network growing huge in the last year, and then Ram Phan will be out sooner than later this year….its been cool…

DATES: Caring Activists Against Fur (CAAF) and local PETA supporters in protesting the fur industry

Please join Caring Activists Against Fur (CAAF) and local PETA supporters in protesting the fur industry. Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning.

Welcome to Caring Activists Against Fur (CAAF)

    Picture

We are a group of activists dedicated to taking
the  anti-fur message to the streets and toppling the fur industry.
Most of our events occur in the NYC/NJ area.
Here They Are! – The 2012-13 fur season dates  up through Christmas of this year.

    Sat., Dec. 15th 12:30 – 2:00pm Steven Corn Furs – 358 Route 17 North, Paramus, NJ

Sunday, January 20th Brooklyn Fur Store Demo – address forthcoming!

    Saturday, January 26th UGGs Flagship Store Protest! 160 Columbus Avenue (@ W. 67th St.) NYC 1 – 3pm
Explanation: Why UGGs during fur season?**
UGGs are cruelty – UGGs are the popular fall/winter boots with a suede exterior and sheepskin interior.  Merino sheep are the animals whose wool is used to make the footwear. These sheep have to grow such huge amounts of wool, that it creates folds in their skin which get cut as the sheep are sheared and the skin is left as open wounds.

    Sunday, February 3rd Bloomingdale’s Lexington Ave. by 59th St, NYC 12:30 – 2:30pm

I need your help to stop bebe from selling fur. Despite all the suffering that goes into every fur hat, scarf, and coat, many bebe stores continue to sell items containing fur. All you need to do is let me know if you can help, and I’ll send you a small pack with everything that you need, such as leaflets, posters, and stickers to help get the word out. Use this store locator to find the bebe store closest to you.

Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning. Foxes, minks, coyotes, and rabbits—and even dogs and cats—are bludgeoned, genitally electrocuted, and often skinned alive for their fur.

If there’s no store near you, please don’t shop at bebe (even online), and let the chain know why! You can contact bebe stores, Inc., executives at the corporate office using this form.

Please let me know if you’re able to help and forward this message to friends, family members, and coworkers. Thank you for your support and for speaking up for the millions of animals who suffer on fur farms.

See all PETA campaigns and causes at SAN!

word by posting this link to a recent Norwegian fur farm investigation on your Facebook and Twitter pages. We want holiday shoppers to realize that an incredible amount of suffering is represented in each fur item, whether it is a full-length coat, fur lining or fur trim. This cruelty will end only when consumers refuse to buy or wear fur.

Let’s make sure L.L. Bean knows we mean business by posting on their Facebook page. If you care about animals, don’t support L.L. Bean. They promote hunting and sell fur. Please buy your clothes from companies that don’t harm animals.

Please post this (or a similar) message to L.L. Bean’s Facebook Page:

I am horrified to hear that L.L. Bean continues sell fur-lined hats and gloves. A company that has been around for 100 years should know better than to promote and support cruelty to animals. I refuse to shop at L.L. Bean until you make the compassionate decision to go fur-free.

First Quarter….Second Quarter….Half Time at Wembly…..International Fans Excited to See Rams…Rams Look to Make Statement in London and the Rams Pats Running Blog: Keys To The Game / Pre Game…

    Third Quarter

    • Second Quarter
    • The Rams held their ground twice before Shane Vereen pounded it in from 1 yard out. New England leads 14-7 with 14:12 to go in the half.
    • Rams start their third possession at their 20.
    • After an 8-yard completion to Richardson and a third down conversion on third and 2 to Kendricks for 6, the Rams went nowhere again.
    • On third-and-15, a short completion to Steve Smith turned into a disaster as he fumbled and LB Rob Ninkovich recovered at the Rams’ 25.
    • A review of the play called it incomplete. Rams to punt. Dodge a bullet there.
    • Patriots get it back at their 21.
    • Gronkowski and Brady continued their dominance, hooking up for gains of 17 and 32 to the Rams’ 9.
    • On third and goal at the 7, Brady hit Gronkowski again for a touchdown. It’s 21-7 Patriots. Rams defense getting no pressure on Brady and he and Gronkowski are picking them apart.
    • Rams start again at their 29.
    • On second down, Bradford hit Givens for 9 and followed with an 8-yard strike to Gibson for a first down at the 38.
    • After another first down got to New England’s 41, a holding penalty pushed the Rams back 10 yards.
    • On first and 20 at the Rams’ 49, Bradford found Richardson for 3 yards but was hit on the play and remained down.
    • Looks like he’ll be OK. Rams call timeout, Bradford won’t even miss a snap.
    • Bradford finds Kendricks at Patriots 46.
    • It’s third and 15 there.
    • Bradford to Kendricks for 10 more sets up fourth and 5 at New England’s 36.
    • Zuerlein on to try a 53-yard field goal.
    • A high snap left Hekker unable to get the snap down and he was dropped for a 9-yard loss.
    • New England took over at its 44 and quickly got 15 on a completion to Woodhead.
    • On third and 4 at the Rams 35, Fletcher was flagged for pass interference again, this time for 15 yards and another first down at the 20.
    • Brady got a first down on third and 1 with a 3-yard sneak.
    • Yet another pass interference on Fletcher gave the Pats another third down conversion. First and goal at the 1 with 14 seconds to go.
    • Ridley scores. It’s 28-7 and getting out of hand here at Wembley as we head to the half.

    First Quarter

    • The Patriots won the toss and elected to defer. The Rams started from their 20.
    • After an offsides penalty, the Rams picked up 14 as Bradford dropped on off to RB Steven Jackson.
    • Bradford hit Pettis for 5 and Jackson picked up 6 on two carries for a first down at the 50.
    • There, Bradford threw a perfect play action strike to WR Chris Givens for a touchdown and a quick 7-0 lead.
    • Tremendous start for the Rams.
    • Givens’ catch was his fifth straight game with a 50-plus yard grab, a new NFL rookie record, passing Willie Gault.
    • New England started at its 22 and got a first down on a pass interference for a 10-yard gain and a first at the 40.
    • Three plays later, they converted again as Brady floated one to RB Danny Woodhead for a gain of 24 to the Rams’ 28.
    • Three plays after that, Brady hit Brandon Lloyd for a 19-yard touchdown.
    • The extra point ties it at 7 with 7:50 to go in the first. Lots of fireworks here early.
    • Rams start again from their 17.
    • Bradford hits Matthew Mulligan for 13 to the 30 and a first down.
    • A 7-yard run by Jackson and 5 for Richardson picked up another first down.
    • But the Rams drive died as Bradford was flagged for grounding on third and 6.
    • New England starts again at its 17.
    • Brady went back to work with two 25-yard completions to TE Rob Gronkowski.
    • The Patriots have second and goal at the Rams 2 in a 7-7 game at the end of the first half.

    Pregame Notes

    • Greetings from Wembley Stadium where the Rams and the Patriots are warming up for today’s kickoff, which takes place at 5:00 p.m. London time and noon back in St. Louis.
    • It’s a chilly, overcast day here in London or, pretty much, par for the course for October in London. But it’s expected that the rain will stay away.
    • Not that anyone cares but the pressbox setup here is somewhat strange. The pressbox isn’t just open air, it’s open, period. It’s a section unto itself but it’s right next to general fan population and is really just regular seats with a table attached to the top.
    • The Rams will be wearing the all blues here as has been their normal custom during home games. As hard as it is to remember at times, this is a home game for the Rams. The stadium is decked out in Rams logos as a reminder.
    • The Rams inactives for today: DE Eugene Sims, QB Austin Davis, WR Danny Amendola, T Rodger Saffold, T Wayne Hunter, LB Mario Haggan and DT Matt Conrath.
    • For the Patriots: TE Aaron Hernandez, G Logan Mankins, S Patrick Chung, S Steve Gregory, RB Brandon Bolden, LB Tracy White and DL Trevor Scott.
    • For the Rams, Joe Barksdale will again start at LT in place of Hunter via Saffold.
    • Keep an eye on WR Brian Quick today, he could have an expanded role.
    • All four Rams RBs will be available so it’s possible Terrance Ganaway could get some chances.
    • The Patriots have some major shuffling to do in the secondary without both starting safeties.
    • New England is wearing white jerseys with blue pants.
    • Stay tuned for updated throughout the game.

International Fans Excited to See Rams

International Fans Excited to See Rams

LONDON – by Nick Wagoner – Keys To Game:

    1. Battling Brady

New England QB Tom Brady remains one of the best in the league and will almost certainly go down as one of the best to ever play.

This season, his numbers are still outstanding but below the video game like performance he put on in 2011.

Teams have long since given up on trying to put the clamps on Brady, knowing full well that the best they can do is limit his damage. To do that, the Rams will have to generate a pass rush on the strength of their front four.

Brady shreds teams that consistently blitz and the Rams have not been a blitz heavy team most of the season.

That means the onus falls on ends Robert Quinn and Chris Long and their cohorts to get to Brady and force him to throw under duress. Even then, it’s likely he’ll still post some strong numbers but if they can at least keep the touchdown totals down, it will give the Rams a chance.

“He’s one of the centerpieces of their team, a future Hall of Famer,” Quinn said. “You can’t completely stop him but if we can slow him down and give our offense as many opportunities as possible to stay on the field and score points, I think we can have a good day out there.”

    2. Dynamic Duo

A big part of Brady’s success is the two-headed tight end monster the Patriots have in the form of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Gronkowski is the big, strong, powerful force of nature that has been nearly unstoppable in the red zone since he came into the league two years ago. Hernandez is the fast, versatile type of tight end that has almost become a hybrid of tight end, receiver, fullback and even running back.

The Rams have done a solid job for the most part against tight ends this year but no team can match the combination the Patriots put forth. Hernandez has battled an ankle injury for most of the season and missed some practice time this week and he has actually been ruled out for this game, a big break for the Rams.

Meanwhile, the job of slowing Gronkowski and making New England make plays on the boundary falls to a group of linebackers and safeties that to this point has kept most tight ends in check.

Still, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will almost certainly look to get his tight ends involved early and often.

“They present a lot of matchup problems with their size and speed,” safetyQuintin Mikell said. “Hernandez basically plays receiver, he runs great routes, has very good speed and he’s a big guy that breaks a lot of tackles so he’s a huge threat. Then, of course, Gronk is huge and he’s fast in his own right. They create some things but we are going to do some different things and move around and basically play our game and hopefully we can minimize the big plays.”

    3. Turnover Turnaround

At the beginning of the season, the Rams defense feasted on opposing quarterbacks by generating turnovers upon turnovers, namely interceptions.

But lately, the takeaway well has gone dry and the Rams have not had a single turnover go their way in the past two games. It’s no coincidence they’ve lost each of those contests as they haven’t won the turnover battle.

New England doesn’t have much of a penchant for giving the ball away but the best way to slow Brady and Co. is to limit the number of possessions they get. The best way to do that is via the turnover.

While the Rams have grabbed their share of interceptions, they do have a statistical anomaly that figures to shift their way eventually: fumbles. The Rams have only forced one fumble all season, that’s forced, not just recovered.

“It’s a little weird,” Mikell said. “That’s never really happened before that I can remember. It is like that sometimes, I can remember teams where we didn’t get any picks and all of a sudden we popped up with a whole bunch. Fumbles have always been there but this is the first time experiencing that so hopefully that will change this week.”

Getting some takeaways and winning the turnover battle is always a priority but it’s even more important against an elite offense like New England.

    4. Undercover

Perhaps the area the Patriots have struggled the most this season is pass defense as they just haven’t been able to find the right mix in the secondary despite spending plenty of high draft choices on defensive backs.

What that group does do well, though, can make things awfully difficult on a quarterback who might look into the secondary and think there are some openings.

“They’re good at holding disguises,” quarterback Sam Bradford said. “They don’t blitz a lot but what they do well is the guys on the back end hold things. They are not going to tip their hand before the snap. Part of my job this week is going to be seeing things after the snap, see what they are doing because they are good at disguising what they do.”

In other words, Bradford has to be able to go through his progressions and be willing to take a check down if it’s there. The temptation against a New England secondary that has struggled is to force the ball down the field. Those shots will be there but Bradford will have to choose his spots wisely in order for the Rams offense to succeed in keeping the Patriots potent offense off the field.

    5. On the Run

While the Patriots have found themselves susceptible to the pass this season, they’ve also established a pretty dominant front seven that makes it difficult for opponents to run the ball against them.

Monster defensive tackle Vince Wilfork leads the charge for a group that is eighth in the league in run defense, allowing 86 yards per contest. With the likes of Wilfork taking on blockers and linebacker Jerod Mayo, the league’s leading tackle so far, cleaning up behind him, the Patriots are actually tied for second in fewest yards allowed per rushing attempt at just 3.3.

The Rams have already proved that a dominant statistical performance heading into their games by a run defense doesn’t mean they’ll shy away from pounding away in the run game.

Backs Steven Jackson and Daryl Richardson have formed a strong one-two punch and had great success against a stout Miami run defense that was first in the league in run defense before meeting the Rams.

Still, it will be a challenge for Jackson and his running mates to find space against the Patriots oversized front.

“They have a very impressive front seven, led by Vince Wilfork, of course,” Jackson said. “I think their front seven is very stout. They do a good job of two-gapping. It makes it really hard on running backs to get a clean read on what they want to do. Their linebackers do a very good job of disengaging blockers once they make contact with a fullback or offensive lineman. The thing is for me to trust my eyes and just be really aggressive.”

LONDON – Strolling through a sporting goods store near Walt Disney World in Orlando in 1995, 8-year old Paul Clarke decided he wanted to buy a hat.The young Clarke didn’t have a preference on the team represented on the hat and eventually opted for the one that had the design he liked best. The cap was one of the newly minted St. Louis Rams, soon after the team had relocated from Los Angeles.

Upon returning home to Oxford, England, Clarke started paying more attention to the NFL within the next couple of years. When he decided he wanted to devote his loyalties to a NFL team, the choice was literally right on top of his head.

“I figured I had a Rams hat, might as well support them,” Clarke said. “I supported them and then they won the Super Bowl which was great and I got into it more and more, especially in the last eight years, I follow the draft, look at the players, research who they are, I know every player on the roster.”

On Saturday afternoon in historic Trafalgar Square, Clarke was joined by many of his international Rams fan brethren for the league’s NFL Fan Rally. The Rams, including coach Jeff Fisher and players such as quarterbackSam Bradford, running back Steven Jackson, receiverDanny Amendola, guard Harvey Dahl, end Chris Long, linebackerJames Laurinaitis, cornerback Cortland Finnegan, linebackerMario Haggan and fullback Brit Miller took to the stage, answered questions and basked in the admiration of a group of Rams fans here that had waited a long time to see their favorite team up close.

Clarke lined up at around 10 a.m., waiting in two separate hour-long lines to claim his spot in the first row in front of the stage. But he was far from the only devoted Rams fan in the crowd on Saturday morning and attending Sunday’s game against the Patriots at Wembley Stadium.

Daniel Whale, of Greenwich, which is in the southeast part of London, made the trip to get a look at the team he’s been following since the 2004 season, which is actually the last time the Rams went to the postseason.

Whale became a fan of the Rams in a quite unconventional way.

“I couldn’t find my television remote at the time but the television was on Seahawks and Rams so I found myself a bit interested in it,” Whale said. “I wasn’t much into the sport at the time but I liked the athleticism and the plays they would come up with. The Rams went on to win that game and then play Atlanta. After the win, I thought “I’m going to see where this goes.’ They didn’t pull through but it was fun so I’ve been a Rams fan ever since then.”

Pete Mackley, of Southampton in London, had a much simpler explanation for how he quite literally got hooked on the blue and gold.

“Years ago American football became big at our school in 88, 89, and we all chose our teams,” Mackley said. “I chose the Rams about 23 years ago. I loved the kit (uniform) and Eric Dickerson.”

Of course, international Rams fans here to see their team this weekend aren’t limited to just natives of Great Britain. With the Rams playing abroad for the first time since the start of the International Series, the opportunity is there for fans all over Europe to make a much shorter trip to see their team.

Quentin Jansen, of the Netherlands, hopped on a train and rode the four hours to town for the weekend and found himself thrilled at the chance to see favorites such as Bradford and Amendola.

Even in the Netherlands, Zuerlein-mania has taken hold.

“They had a certain appeal to me,” Jansen said. “I like Sam Bradford obviously, Danny Amendola as well and Greg the Leg, of course kicking 60-yard field goals. I have a good feeling (about the game). I’m sure that Greg will kick a game-winning and record-breaking field goal.”

For Reme Leemner, who traveled from Germany and arrived at the rally wearing a blue and white Kurt Warner jersey, his Rams fandom traces quite simply to the heyday of Warner and his band of play making brothers in the Greatest Show on Turf.

Leemner believes that having the Rams playing in nearby London provides a great opportunity for all international Rams fans to show what they’ve got.

“It’s very good,” Leemner said. “I think it’s a good opportunity to show that there are a lot of us fans outside of the USA and UK like for me in Germany to see the Rams live in a game.”

With Rams fans from all over the world showing up on Saturday morning, it was also important to note the presence of the devoted and loyal fans from back in St. Louis, fans such as long time season ticket holders Chris and Meg Brooks.

The Brooks’ arrived in London on Friday and went to visit some local sites, specifically some of the sites from the Olympic games. They make it a point to travel to an away game each season and though London was the obvious choice this year, Chris Brooks made it a point to emphasize that he and his wife don’t miss home games.

“We have season tickets and we’ve never missed a home game,” Brooks said. “And this is a home game so we had to come.”

As for their fellow Rams fans here and other countries abroad, following the Rams from afar is a labor of love that has gotten a bit easier over the years. Many of them cited the advancement of social media where they can follow the Rams, their players and the media covering them via Twitter and Facebook.

All of the foreign Rams fans also mentioned the advancement of the television packages available in Europe, which allows them to watch every game live after purchasing special sports packages.

And with a general lack of media coverage of American football in general, all of them use the Internet to keep up with the team as much as possible.

“I can now see all the games and obviously things like the articles and videos posted on stlouisrams.com and training updates and press conferences, it’s a lot easier,” Clarke said. “I don’t miss anything really even being so far away.” (Editor’s Note: Flattery will get you everywhere)

On Sunday, for the first time, die hard fans such as Clarke, Leemner, Mackley, Jansen and Whale will get their chance to see their favorite team play live and in person. It’s an experience many years in the making, one that maybe fans in the States could take for granted.

Judging by their enthusiasm on Saturday afternoon, Sunday will be a very special day not only for the players on the field but those cheering them on in the stands.

“I have waited 23 years to see them live,” Mackley said. “It’s going to be a big, big day for me and I am real excited. I have been to London a few times to watch the games and I was thinking ‘maybe one day,’ and when I heard the news last year, I thought that’s it. I’m a happy man.”

Rams Look to Make Statement in London

    Posted Oct 26, 2012

    Nick WagonerSenior Writer

LONDON – Aside from all of the hoopla and possible distractions that go with playing a game abroad, Rams coach Jeff Fisher and his team see Sunday’s matchup against the Patriots as much more than a chance to grow the game and the Rams brand internationally.

First and foremost, Fisher wants fans all over the world to see something about the organization that might not carry much cache because of its struggles in recent years.

“It’s an opportunity for us to spread the word I’d like to say that maybe the Rams are back,” Fisher said. “That was the thing that’s exciting for us. Now, of course we have to play well but the entire organization starting with Mr. Kroenke, our owner, Kevin Demoff and everybody is excited to be here.”

What Sunday’s kickoff at Wembley Stadium here in London exemplifies is a chance for the Rams to take center stage and make a lasting impression on the NFL that they are no longer a pushover on the schedule.

Considering the setup: playing in front of a huge crowd in one of the world’s most well known stadiums against a New England Patriots team that is perhaps the best known American football team in the world and its cadre of stars, the Rams certainly have a golden opportunity to make a statement.

“Absolutely,” quarterback Sam Bradford said. “It’s a big stage, big opportunity. Obviously, playing over here, it’s going to be broadcast all over the world and we are playing the Patriots, one of, if not the most well known team in the league. They’ve been one of the best for quite a while now so I think this is definitely a big opportunity for us.”

Entering the game at 3-4 and with a bye week coming up, the Rams also have a chance to get their record back to .500 before having a week off. Getting to 4-4 with a chance to get key players like receiver Danny Amendola and left tackle Rodger Saffold back from injury after the bye would put the Rams in prime position to make a run in the season’s second half.

To get there, though, the Rams will have to overcome a number of challenges that will make leaving London with a victory an extremely difficult task.

First and foremost, the Rams will have to ensure they don’t become distracted by the many non-football related activities and possibilities that being in a place like London can throw at them.

Fisher made it a point to bring his team across the pond early in the week so it would have time to adjust to the time change and recover from jet lag. On the same token, it also exposed his team to possible distractions for a longer period of time though that was minimized a bit by spending the first few days at The Grove Hotel, which is on the outskirts of town and somewhat isolated.

Although his team is full of young players still maturing and growing, Fisher had the utmost confidence that the positives of an early arrival would far outweigh any possible outside distractions.

“They know it’s business trip,” Fisher said. “They know the reason we’re here. There will be some time for them and there’s some things I think they are looking forward to doing but this is a young football team that knows how to prepare, knows how to practice and knows how to study and has their priorities in order.”

On the other side, New England coach Bill Belichick took the opposite approach. Comparing the trip across the ocean to a trip to the west coast, the Patriots didn’t leave the United States until Thursday night, arriving on Friday morning.

Rams safety Quintin Mikell thinks that could provide the Rams an early advantage but also is quick to point out that his team can’t think in terms of any leg up it might have from something as trivial as travel.

“I think it makes a big difference,” Mikell said. “Obviously we haven’t experienced it so coming over here a couple days early, the way we felt the first couple days is the way New England might feel when they get here. They’re going to feel a little sluggish. We’ve all still got to play the game but it’s a little added advantage for us. Of course, being here a little longer there are more distractions here for us but we have done a good job of minimizing that.”

Middle linebacker James Laurinaitis is also pleased to have already gotten past the jet lag and travel but isn’t so convinced it gives his team any kind of advantage. Instead, he believes a game like this comes down to far more basic football basics.

“There are different theories on it,” Laurinaitis said. “I think what it comes down to is who is going to be prepared better and just who makes more plays on Sunday. I think for us I am glad we came over early just going through the whole process and the airport travel and all that stuff, I’m glad we got that done and can put it behind us. So now that we are here, we are just focusing on football and we’ll see.”

A big part of that focus for the Rams is taking strides in the areas that have kept them out of the win column the past couple of weeks and the four times this year they have lost. That means creating more turnovers on defense and perhaps most important finishing drives with touchdowns instead of field goals.

In facing the high-octane Patriots offense led by quarterback Tom Brady, 3’s won’t get you very far. It’s something that Bradford has emphasized to his teammates all week.

“That’s our goal,” Bradford said. “Anytime we have the opportunity to score touchdowns this week, we have to. We can’t settle for field goals. That’s something that’s hurt us the past couple weeks. When you go up against an offense that’s as explosive as the Patriots, points come at a premium and we have to score as many as possible.”

Putting a finer point on it, running back Steven Jackson said it’s imperative to maximize each possession by moving the ball and keeping Brady and Co. on the sidelines. It’s cliché but in games such as this, the best defense can often be a good, grind it out offense.

“We’re going to have a very tough challenge on Sunday,” Jackson said. “We’ve got to make sure that we help our defense out and once we get into the red zone, we’ve got to put up touchdowns. We’ve got to take advantage of chewing up the clock, as well, because their offense can put up points at any given time. Particularly on offense, we’ve got to make sure that we carry our weight.”

It’s been a long time since the Rams have found themselves in a game in which they can take center stage. Earlier this season, they made a strong impression on the nation with a nationally televised Thursday night victory against Arizona at the Edward Jones Dome.

But Sunday’s contest will increase the brightness of the spotlight and give the Rams the chance to announce to the world that not only is their future chock full of potential but that maybe, just maybe the future is already here.

For the team’s longest tenured member, that opportunity has been almost a decade in the making.

“For the last nine seasons, I’ve taken great pride in being a St. Louis Ram,” Jackson said.
“There’s been a lot of history, particularly at the running back spot, that I’ve been able to carry on. I want to continue to do so. Now, we’re here outside of U.S. borders, and we want to show our fans globally what we’re building and what we’re doing in St. Louis.”

Rams Adjusting Well to London; With little rest after a long flight, the Rams sent their entire roster to take part in the biggest Play 60…

LONDON – Encouraged to stay awake as long as possible Tuesday night so he could go to bed at a normal time and get on a regular sleep schedule as soon as possible, Rams defensive endRobert Quinn spent his first night in London in a movie theatre, of all places.“I was laying in my bed and felt myself dozing off and was like ‘Oh, this is not good,’” Quinn said. “I was just trying to keep myself busy and active and get out of the hotel.”

So Quinn found the nearest movie theatre and some public transportation to go see the new action movie ‘Taken 2,’ a movie that probably won’t win any Academy Awards but has enough fights, explosions and other loud noises to keep one awake. Or at least so you’d think.

“I went to the movies and even there I dozed off a second,” Quinn said. “It was a struggle.”

No matter how much Quinn and his teammates attempted to get on a regular sleep schedule on their first night in London, the reality of the situation is that you can’t force your body to do things it’s not used to, at least not right away.

Instead, the efforts of Rams coach Jeff Fisher, his staff and his team figure to be much more gradual as they adjust to a six-hour time change and the lingering effects of a nearly eight-hour flight.

Hence the idea behind Fisher and his team wanting to arrive here as early in the week as possible to try to establish some sense of normalcy in advance of Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

“That’s precisely the reason we elected to come over early in the week so we could get the players adjusted not only to the travel but also to the time zone change,” Fisher said.

Quinn, quarterback Sam Bradford and others noted that even with the attempts to go to bed at a regular time, they ended up just staring at the ceiling for hours on end before sleep kicked in around 1 or 2 a.m. London time.

Even with the knowledge that was likely going to happen, Fisher put in a normal work schedule for his team this week, one that closely mirrors what the team would follow in St. Louis on a Wednesday.

Wake up calls were set for around 7 a.m. London time, which is 1 a.m. St. Louis time but getting the players up and used to that schedule didn’t seem to be much of a hindrance to Wednesday’s practice.

“I was very, very pleased with their response this morning and the way they practiced today considering they arrived here yesterday,” Fisher said. “We will gradually acclimate them and adjust their body clocks to play at 5 o’clock and we’ve got several days to do that.”

Helping the Rams make the adjustment not only to the drastic time change and getting over jet lag is a first-class set of accommodations that has essentially created a London version of ContinuityX Training Center at the Grove Hotel on the outskirts of the city.

With the help of the training staff, operations staff, equipment staff, I.T. staff and video staff combined with an extremely courteous and understanding hotel staff, the Rams have created meeting rooms, coaching offices, dining areas and even a locker room right in the lobby of the hotel.

It’s actually quite a spectacle to behold.

“Our organization did a great job of making this feel like a home game,” endChris Long said. “Our hotel is awesome. We have a locker room in the hotel, it’s pretty amazing. As soon as you step in the locker room or training room, it’s business as usual and we really feel that way. They’ve done a great job with that.”

The team hotel is surrounded by a golf course but also has a makeshift full-length football field that the team used for a walk through Wednesday morning and will use for practice Friday before re-locating to accommodations more centrally located in the city.

“This morning when we started out it was no different than a normal Wednesday for us in St. Louis,” Fisher said. “Our organization, with the help of everybody here, has done a tremendous job setting up The Grove hotel as if it was a facility and so we started meetings with no glitches and everything went well this morning.”

The facilities at the team hotel aren’t the only ones that are drawing rave reviews from the Rams as they make the adjustment to all things London.

Courtesy of owner Stan Kroenke, the Rams are spending the first two days of this week training on the pristine fields of the Arsenal Football Club. Located outside London in Hertfordshire, the Arsenal training center is widely regarded as one of the most advanced of its kind in the world.

The Arsenal facility holds 10 full-size grass fields (or pitches, as the locals say), all of which have undersoil drainage and automated sprinkler systems. Two of the fields even have undersoil heating systems and all are engineered to precisely duplicate the playing surface of Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal plays its home game.

“These fields are awesome,” Long said. “This is a first class facility. We are really grateful that they let us use their facility. I wouldn’t want a bunch of big 300 pounders tearing up our grass if we were a world-class soccer team but we sure appreciate it.”

As the Rams get more comfortable and get their bodies on a more regular clock, everything figures to slow down a bit for them and they’ll be able to enjoy more of what London has to offer.

Part of staying away from the heart of the city the first few nights was to help them focus on the task at hand and ensuring they get their bodies on to London mode. Long claimed Wednesday afternoon that he’s already there.

By Thursday morning, they all hope to be so they can enjoy the city a little bit without looking through bleary eyes. Make no mistake, though, just because they plan to get more comfortable doesn’t mean they’ll lose focus on the task at hand.

“We know that we are here to win a game,” Bradford said. “Coach Fisher made that very apparent in our meeting this morning. Our schedule today was exactly the way it would have been if we were back home in St. Louis. I think everyone on our team understands why we are over here this week.”

We haven’t written about the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline for a while, except to try and rally support for the brave people blockading construction along its southern portion. After more than two weeks in the trees of Texas, their dramatic action is drawing more and more attention, as they reveal the recklessness and heartlessness of a company like TransCanada — the kind that will call the cops to get a great grandmother and arrest her for ‘trespassing’ on her own land when she protests the pipeline crossing it.

The larger part of the Keystone pipeline project — the northern leg to Canada — has been on the political back-burner since last year’s massive protests. Since that northern leg would have been a fuse to the biggest carbon bomb on the planet, we counted that as a temporary victory.

The State Department is supposedly figuring out how to calculate the climate risk from the tar sands, something they failed to do last time round — but so far there’s no sign they have a real plan. Neither candidate for President has expressed any opposition to building the pipeline, so it may be just a matter of weeks before we need your help again, and in a big way.

And in the meantime, we have a piece of truly good news. Our friends in Canada have done a remarkable job of organizing opposition to the so-called Northern Gateway pipeline that would carry tarsands gunk to the Pacific. As this article in Canada’s leading paper put it last week, that plan is effectively dead, dashed against the rock-solid opposition of Indigenous groups, and canadian climate activists both. With it goes the favorite talking point of Keystone backers, that “they’ll just send it to China anyway.”

So the Keystone fight will continue, with the stakes raised again — now Keystone is the last, best chance to export tar sands oil from Alberta.

I’ve taken two big lessons from this fight so far. The first is that when we band together, we’re truly a match for the fossil fuel industry — and however the battle comes out we’ve already done far more than almost anyone thought possible. The second is that we can’t stop global warming one pipeline at a time — even as we bottled up the tarsands, the amount of carbon in the atmosphere just kept going up, bringing us the scorching, drought plagued summer of 2012.

We have to go at the industry as a whole and persuade our fellow residents of this planet that coal and oil and gas must be kept in the ground. That’s why I wrote the article for Rolling Stone about the new climate math that went viral this summer, and that’s why we’re turning that article into a big new campaign — the Do the Math Tour.

Some of the stops along our Do the Math tour are sold out already, but some have tickets remaining, and we hope to see you there. But only, really, if you’re ready to go to work. Because we’ve got so much work to do. Click here to join the tour in Philadelphia: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/4366251576

    Bill

P.S. If you’re a student on a college campus, we particularly need your help — before you buy a ticket, please take a moment to sign up here so that we can be in touch about what you can do with your school to jump-start the movement: act.350.org/survey/students-do-the-math

P.P.S. Last Friday night I found myself on the Bill Maher show, debating a couple of diehard conservatives about climate change. It came out pretty well–the very end of the enclosed clip is probably the best part. My sense is that at this point only ideologues really doubt climate science; the trick now is to turn people’s understanding into action! 350.org/en/bill-mckibben-vs-climate-deniers-bill-maher

You’ve Got to Run Like An Antelope….Outta Control…..These pronghorn antelope are celebrating — and so are deer, elk, moose, bears, bobcats, lynx and other wildlife throughout Wyoming’s Upper Hoback region

These pronghorn antelope are celebrating — and so are deer, elk, moose, bears, bobcats, lynx and other wildlife throughout Wyoming’s Upper Hoback region: A proposal to drill 136 new oil wells in this vital wildlife corridor has been officially scrapped, and the company is selling their leases! This is fantastic news for the area’s wildlife and everyone who has been fighting this project for months. One of our own experts even set up remote cameras to document all the wildlife that could have been put at risk; visit http://dfnd.us/URCeRs to learn more and see a slideshow of his photos.

It’s been almost a year since we heard about the U.S. Forest Service’s plan to allow oil and gasdrilling in the Upper Hobackregion of the Wyoming Range, but the wait was well worth it. We learned on Friday that PXP, the oil company proposing to drill 136 new wells in a critical wildlife corridor, agreed to sell their leases and forego the project entirely!

This is a major victory for the broad coalition known as The Citizens for the Wyoming Range, which has been battling the environmentally damaging proposal for more than a year and a half. With the help of the Trust for Public Land, the coalition negotiated a buyout of all of PXP’s existing drilling leases throughout the entire Bridger-Teton National Forest, and the leases will be retired forever. That means the myriad species that use the forest–deer, elk, moose, bears, bobcats, pronghorn antelope, lynx and more–can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Defenders played an important role in raising awareness of the disastrous drilling proposal. By sending out alerts to our members, we were able to help generate more than 60,000 comments in opposition to the proposal. Further, Defenders expert David Gaillard led an independent effort to document wildlife that travel through the Upper Hoback region. He set up remote cameras to photograph all the species that would be at risk of losing vital habitat if drilling was allowed to occur. See a photo slideshow of his trip to setup the cameras, as well as the video below summarizing what he found:

Because this is horrendous and hideous. Can you imagine the fear these animals must be in the last minutes of their lives? No living being deserves to be treated and used this way. These are private fishermen and the penalty is ONLY 2 years and a monetary fine of a little over $5,000 USD, we want the penalty to be stiffened to deter this horrific crime to 10 years in prison (no parole) and $100,000 fine.

Here is a video (it is in French) that shows the dog pictured is REAL, that this crime is real and it must be stopped worldwide. Please join this cause together we WILL put an end to using live animals as bait WORLDWIDE!

Hi all of you wonderful caring people. Last week my friend Dale went to the Brigitte Bardot Foundation. She told them about the petition and all of your signatures and they gave her a name of a man that worked there to contact. She sent him a very explicit email in French and we are still awaiting his reply.
For all of my French supporters, I am trying desperately to find the name of a person in the French Government that I can direct this petition to, if any of you may know the name or where I could find that I would be very grateful.

As far as Florida I do have that name. And I am closing in on a name for North Carolina, if any of you can help me there that would be terrific!

I will not give up, I am working very hard to make your support count toward ending these horrible crimes and help protect and save the lives of innocent animals.
Thank you all again for being a part of something amazing, keep the faith and I will keep the fight going strong!

      Blessed be,

    7. Update #1

      Posted on September 13
I am still in search of an animal rights group that will help me get this to the right people and stop this horror forever. The plan is to either increase the penalty from only 2 years in prison to 10 years (no parole) and the fine from a little over $5K USD to $100,000 it may act deter these people. Also, there is a reward that Sea Shepards offers $1,000 to policemen who turn these barbaric beasts in to the authorities. If we could increase the reward to say $5,000 or maybe as high as $10,000 (using the fine money collected) and offer it to anyone, it may help deter or even end this horrific crime for good. Reunion has a law that it is illegal to have any animals (alive or dead) on a boat. However, as of February 12, 2012 this terror is still going on. There is too much money to be made on selling shark fins and meat, so a $5,000 USD fine is not strong enough. In addition, it is difficult to regulate and catch these fishermen. If we increase the reward for turning these horrid people in, then maybe we can help deter them that way. This petition will also be sent to Mexico and the United States because yes friends, it is happening there too. This is so sad and it is time for this to END! Even one innocent animal being captured, have a hook gashed into their flesh and dragged by a boat struggling for their lives only to be torn apart by a shark is ONE TOO MANY! Let’s work together to end this heartbreaking crime forever. It is TIME! Please pass this along (if you have not already) if you have posted it already, I thank you with all my heart for caring and sharing. There is strength in numbers and together we will be heard. Together we will make a difference in the lives of these innocent animals. When 30,000 million friends worked together they were able to influence legislation with 300,000 signatures. Just imagine what 999,000 caring, loving, concerned signatures WILL DO. We cannot be ignored! Blessed be ^;^

If any of you wonderful people know how we can further this cause even more, in other ways, I would be eternally grateful for any suggestions. Thank you! You’re amazing! Maggie

To: The French, Mexican and United States Governments

We have to stop this PLEASE help!

French Islanders using live puppies and kittens as shark bait??

Please stop this senseless abuse to innocent puppies and kittens. French Islander, Mexican and yes American fishermen and hunters are using LIVE puppies and kittens as shark and alligator bait!! No living being should have to undergo this torture and insurmountable fear! This is inhumane and must stop NOW. Together we can make a difference and let our voice be heard as ONE. Please sign this petition and please pass this along. Thank you for caring. Blessed be ^;^

Currently the penalty is only 2 years and a little over$5,000 USD that is far too little for such a heinous crime. We urge that you raise the penalty to 10 years in prison with NO parole and a fine of $100,000. As well as offering a reward of $10,000 for turning in the offenders, which will come from the fines collected. This will hopefully act as a deterrent and will stop these horrendous acts against innocent animals FOREVER. Please do the right thing and help us stop these people.

Islanders on the French controlled Reunion Island have been using live dogs as shark bait.

The Sun claims that “a six-month-old labrador pup was recently found alive with a huge double hook through its snout – like the dog above – and another through a leg.”

It is also claimed that local fisherman have also been using kittens!

Reunion Island is an overseas départements of France and an official region of France, giving it the same status as a province or state in other countries.

Dogs Used as Shark Bait on French Island

    by Patrizio •
    On feb 12, 2012

Stephanie Roche of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, another animal-welfare group in Paris, confirmed that live animals are used as bait on Réunion. But, she said, it is not a common practice.

The Bardot organization has been fighting the practice for a decade. But this is the first time Réunion politicians have reacted strongly and swiftly to stop it, Roche said.

The French Embassy in Washington, D.C., issued a written statement condemning the use of dogs as shark bait, emphasizing that such acts are illegal and will not be tolerated in the French territory.

The embassy maintains these are very isolated cases and authorities on the island are closely monitoring the situation.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in Friday Harbor, Washington State, is offering a U.S. $1,000 reward to any Réunion police officer who arrests anyone using live dogs or cats as bait for sharks.

Still looking hotter than hot, Actress Daryl Hannah was charged with criminal trespassing on Thursday and then released following her arrest as she stared down an excavator that was clearing ground to begin construction on theKeystone XL pipeline in Texas.

Actress Daryl Hannah was charged with criminal trespassing on Thursday and then released following her arrest as she stared down an excavator that was clearing ground to begin construction on theKeystone XL pipeline in Texas.

Hannah, known for her roles in Splash and numerous other movies, joined 78-year-old property owner Eleanor Fairchild, whose land in Winnsboro, about 80 miles east of Dallas, was taken by eminent domain for the project, Reuters reported. This was Hannah’s second arrest for protesting Keystone XL, TransCanada Corp.‘ s proposed $7 billion, 1,700-mile-long pipeline that would bring crude originating in the Alberta oil sands to ports on the Gulf of Mexico, south of Houston. She was arrested outside the White House in August 2011, along with fellow actress and activist Tantoo Cardinal, a Métis who grew up near the oil sands, and more than a thousand other protesters. [1] Daryl Hannah has been arrested in Texas. The ‘Kill Bill’ actress was taken into custody for criminal trespassing and resisting arrest and held at the Wood County Jail after she and a landowner stepped in front of machinery to halt the construction of an oil pipeline. Daryl and 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild were hoping to stop the progress of TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipe through the latter’s farmland in Winnsboro – which was subject to a compulsory purchase order for the project – almost a hundred miles east of Dallas. [2]

The pair stood in front of heavy equipment in an effort to halt construction efforts on Fairchild’s farm of the Keystone XL pipeline, reports the AP. Hannah’s manager Paul Bassis says they’ve “arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother” for criminal trespassing. This TransCanada pipeline, which is designed to transport oil from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast refineries in Texas, has long been something Hannah is opposed to. David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, says, “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activitists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” Bassis says there is a “strong indication” both women will be kept overnight in the local jail. “The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great-grandmother off the streets,” adds Bassis. [3] The actress, 51, and landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, reportedly stood on equipment on Fairchild’s Winnsboro farm to halt attempts at building the Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf Coast of Texas. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, which is behind the construction of the reported $7 billion pipeline, said in an email to the Associated Press. [4] Hannah and 78-year-old landowner Eleanor Fairchild were reportedly standing in front of equipment on Fairchild’s farm in Winnsboro, Tex. in an attempt to keep the construction from progressing. This isn’t the first time that Hannah has been arrested for protesting the TransCanada pipeline. She was picked up in August 2011 in Washington, where several hundred other individuals were arrested the same month for standing up against the building of the $7 billion pipeline, which will bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries. “”It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,”" David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, said, of Hannah’s recent arrest. He also claimed that the protestors were “”putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.”" [5] Hannah has long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline, designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, said in an email to AP. He also said protesters were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” Hannah’s manager, Paul Bassis, told AP on Thursday, “The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets.” [6]

According to People, the actress, 51, and landowner E leanor Fairchild, 78, reportedly stood on equipment on Fairchild’s Winnsboro farm to halt attempts at building the Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf Coast of Texas. David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, issued a statement via email about the matter, saying “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” [7] Thursday, the 51-year-old actress and landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, reportedly stood on equipment at Fairchild’s Winnsboro, Texas, farm to stop attempts to building the Keystone XL pipeline, PEOPLE reports. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” said David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada – the company behind the pipeline, in an email to the Associated Press. [8]

How can you be arrested for “trespassing” on your own land? Well, anything can happen when a multinational corporation comes in and expropriates your farm for their profit. That’s why actress and activist Daryl Hannah has joined forces with East Texas ranch owner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, to stage a protest against Keystone XL construction on Mrs. Fairchild’s farm. The actress is intent on defending Mrs. Fairchild’s home and business, Fairchild Farms, a portion of which has been expropriated by TransCanada, for its toxic tar sands pipeline. The duo claim their action is inspired by our ongoing tree blockade happening on a neighboring property.[9] Source: Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Hollywood actress, Daryl Hannah has been released from the Wood County Jail after she was arrested for protesting the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, Thursday afternoon. Hannah, who starred in movies such as Splash, Kill Bill, and Steel Magnolias, and Eleanor Fairchild, were each charged with criminal trespassing and other charges. [10] Actress Daryl Hannah and an East Texas landowner bonded out of the Wood County Jail early this morning after being arrested while protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline. Daryl Hannah and landowner Eleanor Fairchild say they were just peacefully protesting, even though Fairchild admits to trespassing. [11] Seventy-eight-year-old great-grandmother Eleanor Fairchild did not know of Hollywood actress Daryl Hannahbefore the two were jailed in Wood County, Texas together Thursday for protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline construction in Fairchild’s backyard. “I just met her, I didn’t even know her from Adam. I didn’t know her movies,” Fairchild said of her cellmate. [12]

Daryl Hannah, 51, and Eleanor Fairchild, 78, were arrested on charges of criminal trespass and booked into the Wood County Jail, the sixth and seventh people to be arrested in recent Wood County protests aimed at stopping TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion Keystone XL pipeline. [13] Hannah, 51, was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and trespassing, as informed by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Hannah had stood in front and tried to prevent an excavator from uprooting trees for building the Keystone XL pipeline, a project of TransCanada Corp. She was joined by the owner of the property whose trees were being uprooted – 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild, powerless to protect her property from being ravaged by oil companies backed by big interests. [14]

TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline is set to transfer crude oil from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast. Hannah and landowner Eleanor Fairchild were arrested in northeast Texas after the two stood near heavy equipment to try to halt its construction on the 78-year-old woman’s farm in Winnsboro, Hannah’s manager told the Associated Press. Both women were jailed and charged for criminal trespassing and released hours later after posting bail, according to police records obtained by OTRC.com. [15]The Splash star, a longtime environmental campaigner, was taken into custody alongside 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild on Thursday night (04Oct12) after taking part in a demonstration against TransCanada’s controversial Keystone XL pipeline, which is being built to transfer crude oil from Canada to refineries on America’s Gulf Coast. The women were booked on suspicion of criminal trespassing after they stood in front of construction equipment on Fairchild’s farm in the town of Winnsboro, near Dallas and they were released from Wood County Jail in Quitman late on Thursday. [16] Hannah and landowner Eleanor Fairchild were standing in front of heavy equipment in an attempt to halt construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild’s farm in Winnsboro, a town about 100 miles east of Dallas. They were arrested for criminal trespassing and taken to the Wood County Jail, Bassis said. [17]

Hannah, 51, was arrested in Winnsboro, Tex., about 100 miles east of Dallas, after blocking the progress of heavy equipment intended to continue the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. She was arrested alongside 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild, whose farm has been partially condemned so the pipeline can run through it. “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother,” said Paul Bassis, Hannah’s manager confirmed. [18] Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested in Texas as she helped property owner Eleanor Fairchild try to stop an excavator from clearing land it was preparing for construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. [1]Hannah, and an elderly landowner, Eleanor Fairchild, were arrested in response to construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Eleanor’s property about 100 miles east of Texas, according to an AP report. [19]

Hollywood actress, Daryl Hannah has been released from the Wood County Jail after she was arrested for protesting the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, Thursday afternoon. [11] A Hollywood star was arrested today by Wood County authorities protesting the Keystone XL pipeline. According to her publicist Paul Bassis, Daryl Hannah, 51, and an elderly woman were taken away in handcuffs and charged with criminal trespassing. [25]The 51-year-old actress turned activist is taken into custody for criminal trespassing and resisting arrest for protesting a pipeline that could run through Oklahoma. A Washington, D.C., SWAT officer handcuffs actress Daryl Hannah after she was arrested during an August 2011 Keystone XL pipeline protest outside the White House. [26] Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested for protesting in front of the earth-moving machines preparing to begin constructions for the much-debated Keystone XL pipeline. [27] Hollywood actor Daryl Hannah was arrested yesterday near the same place as a Louisville man a couple of weeks ago, protesting construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, according to news reports. [28] Daryl Hannah was released Thursday night from the Wood County Jail in Winnsboro after being arrested Wednesday for protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline. [25] The two women were protesting against TransCanada’s proposed oil pipeline in Winnsboro, around 100 miles east of Dallas, and were arrested for reportedly standing in front of heavy drilling machinery on Fairchild’s farm in an attempt to bring work to a halt. “They’ve arrested Daryl. and a rural Texas great-grandmother,” The AP quotes Bassis as saying. Quipping that “the streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets”, Bassis added that he had spoken to Hannah, who had indicated it was likely that the two women would be held at Wood County Jail overnight. [29] Hannah said: “I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of TransCanada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and badgering. We sort of stood in front of them and held our hands up in a stop motion.” Her publicist Paul Bassis said: “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother.” A spokesman for TransCanada said protesters had been “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk”. He added: “It is unfortunate Ms Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” [30] In August 2011, Hannah was arrested in Washington, D.C. after protesting the same pipeline. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, told reporters. In January, President Obama denied the pipeline a permit after congressional Republicans had given him a 60-day deadline to act. Obama, however, permitted the pipeline to reroute its path through less environmentally endangered areas, including through Fairchild’s property. “The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets,” Bassis said. [18] The Kill Bill actress was also arrested, among several hundred activists and scientists, in August of 2011 while protesting the pipeline in Washington. She has reportedly long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline. David Dodson, a spokesperson for TransCanada, has stated, “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.”[31] The AP reports that the two women stood in front of construction equipment in an attempt to hinder workers from building the Keystone XL pipeline designed to transport crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, said in an email to the AP. He went on to warn that the protesters were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [32] Obama denied the permit in January, citing time restraints. He did approve an expedited permit for TransCanada to begin construction of a portion of the pipeline from Cushing, OK to the Gulf. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property. It is also unfortunate that she and other professional activists have chosen to engage in illegal acts, putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk, along with trying to prevent thousands of Americans from providing for their families by helping to build the Gulf Coast Project and the energy security it will provide.” [33]

Hannah is a staunch opponent of the pipeline, which is planned to run from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and was arrested at the White House last August following a sit-in against the development. TransCanada spokesman David Dodson said: “It is unfortunate Ms Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” He also argued that protesters were endangering the safety of both themselves and others. [29] Fraught with controversy, the pipeline is also a factor in the upcoming Presidential election. TransCanada called Hannah’s arrest, which she said resulted in an injured wrist, “unfortunate” but did not express regret. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” corporate spokesperson David Dodson told the Associated Press, adding that protesters were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [1]The actress and the landowner were taken to Wood County Jail on suspicion of criminal trespassing. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, TransCanada’s representative, told The Associated Press. He said the protesters were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [34] The actress was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest, paying a $1,000 and a $3,000 bond, respectively. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada Corp., told the AP, adding they were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [35] The issue has even been debated by President Barak Obama. Speaking of Daryl’s arrest, TransCanada spokesman David Dodson said: ”It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” He added protesters were ”putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk”.[2]

Police were called to the scene after Hannah and 78-year-old property owner, Eleanor Fairchild, stood on equipment at the Winnsboro farm to halt attempts to build the line. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada said in statement to the Associated Press. [36]

Hannah, a longtime opponent to the proposed $7 billion pipeline, was arrested alongside 78-year-old landowner Eleanor Fairchild in Winnsboro, Texas, for criminal trespassing at a construction site. TransCanada wants to bury its pipeline under Fairchild’s property. [23] Daryl, 51, was standing with Eleanor Fairchild in front of heavy machinery in attempt to halt construction of the pipeline on Eleanor’s farm. The women were arrested for criminal trespassing and were taken to the Wood County Jail, where they were expected to be held overnight. It’s not the first time the actress has spoken out against the construction of the $7 billion TransCanada pipeline. [37] Taken into custody by Wood County Sherriff’s deputies alongside Hannah was a 78-year-old local landowner who joined in the protest of the pipeline designed to transport crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. According to Perez Hilton, Daryl Hannah’s manager Paul Bassis confirms reports, stating, “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother.” Bassis added that he had spoken to the actress Thursday evening and that there was “a strong indication” that both she and Eleanor Fairchild would be kept in lock-up overnight. [31]HOUSTON — Actress Daryl Hannah of “Splash” fame was arrested in northeast Texas on Thursday, along with a 78-year-old landowner as the pair protested an oil pipeline designed to bring crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother,” said Paul Bassis, Hannah’s manager. [38]

The pipeline is deigned to bring crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Daryl’s agent, Paul Bassis, said the protesters were likely to be kept in jail last night (04.10.12), adding: ”They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother. ”The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets.” [2] Big screen film star and environmental activist Daryl Hannah made quite the splash when she was arrested on a farm in Winnsboro, Texas yesterday for protesting the creation of an oil pipeline which would bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast. [39]

Hannah — who has starred in dozens of movies, including “Kill Bill” and “Splash” — also was arrested in August 2011 while protesting the pipeline in Washington. She was one of several hundred prominent scientists and activists arrested that month. They argue the pipeline would be unsafe because it would be carrying heavy, acidic crude oil that could more easily corrode a metal pipe, which would lead to a spill. They also say refining the oil would further contaminate the air in a region that has long struggled with pollution. TransCanada says its pipeline would be the safest ever built, and that the crude is no dirtier than oil currently arriving from Venezuela or parts of California. The issue became politically charged when congressional Republicans gave President Barack Obama 60 days to decide whether TransCanada should be granted the necessary permit for the pipeline to cross an international border before snaking its way 1,700 miles south to the Texas coast. Obama, saying his administration did not have enough time to study the potential environmental impacts, denied the permit in January. He encouraged TransCanada to reroute the northern portion of the pipeline to avoid an environmentally sensitive area of Nebraska. He also promised to expedite permitting of a southern portion of the pipeline from Cushing, Okla., to the Gulf Coast to relieve a bottleneck at the Cushing refinery. TransCanada began construction of that portion of the pipeline this summer after receiving the necessary permits. [17] In September, five protesters arrested in Franklin County spent 48 hours in jail after attaching themselves to machinery. In addition to environmental concerns, protests have been raised over what opponents say is TransCanada’s abuse of eminent domain using its status as a so-called common carrier. Obama, saying his administration did not have enough time to study the potential environmental impacts, denied the permit in January. He expedited permitting of a southern portion of the pipeline from Cushing, Okla., to the Gulf. TransCanada began construction of that portion this summer. “Hundreds of thousands of people stand in opposition to this pipeline and have since this became widely known,” said Paul Bassis, who identified himself as Hannah’s manager for her work as an environmental activist. “This Canadian company is taking land from private landowners to bring this oil to the Gulf to be sold on the open market. It is a false premise to say it will bring energy independence.” [13]

The two had stood before heavy construction equipment on Fairchild’s land in Winnsboro, in the East of the Lone Star State, where TransCanada is constructing part of a $7 billion pipeline to bring the Alberta tar sands’ non-conventional oil to the US’ Gulf Coast. Hannah and Fairchild both told The Vancouver Observer they did not expect to get arrested. Hannah was staying at Fairchild’s 90-acre farm as part of her ongoing advocacy against the pipeline and a forthcoming documentary about the individual U.S. landowners the pipeline’s construction has affected. [12] Hannah has long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline, which is designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries. [40]

Actress Daryl Hannah and property owner Eleanor Fairchild on efforts to block construction of the Keystone Pipeline because of its impact on landowner. [43]Hannah, who is also facing a charge of resisting arrest, has now spoken out about the drama, insisting the pair had done nothing wrong. She tells local news channel KLTV, “I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of TransCanada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain.” The actress has accused a burly guard allegedly working for the oil company of hurting her for no reason: “We just sort of stood in front of them (police) and held our hands in a stop motion. I’m holding my wrist because there was this private security guard. and he injured my wrist.” It’s Hannah’s second arrest fighting the pipeline – she was taken into custody in August, 2011, after protesting outside the White House in Washington, D.C. [16] ”I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of Trans Canada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain,” said Hannah. “We just sort of stood in front of them and held our hands in a stop motion. I’m holding my wrist because there was this private security guard hired by TransCanada and he injured my wrist,” said Hannah. “The pipeline, if it was regular crude I have no objection to, I object to Tar Sands which they don’t even know how to clean up if it spills. [10] ”I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of TransCanada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain,” Hannah told the station. “We just sort of stood in front of them and held our hands up in a stop motion. I’m holding my wrist because there was this private security guard hired by TransCanada and he injured my wrist.” Fairchild said she objects specifically to the project’s proposed usage of oil extracted from Tar Sands, which is a type of petroleum deposit made out of loose sand. She added: “I’m concerned about our water supply and I’m concerned about the pipe itself. Fairchild also told KLTV that she did not throw herself in front of the excavator, as sheriff’s office officials had told reporters, adding: “I had no intention of killing myself.” [15]

“I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of Trans Canada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. According to sources, the 51-year-old and landowner Eleanor Fairchild were forcibly removed by police after standing in the way of heavy equipment building the pipeline on Fairchild’s farm in Texas. “They were arrested for criminal trespassing and taken to the Wood County Jail, Paul Bassis, Hannah’s manager told Bloomberg.[44] According to sources, Hannah and Fairchild were forcibly removed by police after standing in the way of heavy equipment being used to build the pipeline. “They were arrested for criminal trespassing and taken to the Wood County Jail, Paul Bassis, Hannah’s manager, told Bloomberg. Hannah also faces a charge of resisting arrest, according to jail records. [45]

The two stood in front of heavy equipment in an attempt to halt construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild’s farm in Winnsboro, a town about 100 miles east of Dallas, reports AP. Authorities said the pair were arrested while standing in front of heavy equipment in an attempt to halt construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild’s farm south of Winnsboro. [42]

Fairchild owns land in Winnsboro that the pipeline will cross. Reports Thursday evening indicated that both women would be jailed overnight. The Keystone XL, owned by TransCanada (NYSE: TRP ), has been a focus of controversy for the last several years with both protests and congressional actions focusing on the pipeline that will bring oil from Canada to refineries in Texas. It’s the second time that the actress, star of such movies as Splash and Clan of the Cave Bear, has been arrested while protesting the pipeline. In August 2011, she was arrested in Washington State along with several hundred other people. [46] The Splash actress was taken into custody in Winnsboro, Texas, on Thursday after demonstrating against the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, used to bring crude oil from Canada to America’s Gulf Coast. [37] The Elle Driver of “ Kill Bill ” movie series was detained after doing a protest against TransCanada’s construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to transfer crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast for fear of air pollution. [34] The Keystone XL pipeline, a project of TransCanada Corp, would ship more than half a million barrels a day of oil sands-derived crude to the Texas Gulf Coast from Canada. [22]

The specific pipeline in question is the Keystone XL pipeline, which stretches from the Texas Gulf Coast to Canada. [47]

Hannah and 78-year-old Fairchild had positioned themselves in front of necessary equipment in an attempt to stop construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild’s Winnsboro, TX, property. [31] On Thursday afternoon, Hannah marched across Fairchild Farms with the ranch owner to block bulldozers from continuing to clear large swaths of Mrs. Fairchild’s land along the toxic tar sands pipeline’s route. Keystone XL will permanently bisect Mrs. Fairchild’s 300 acre ranch, which includes undeveloped wetland areas and natural springs producing over 400 gallons of fresh water per minute from her property. Hannah, whose outspoken anti-Tar Sands position dates back many years, expressed pride to be able to stand with Mrs. Fairchild who is watching her home and its delicate ecosystems be destroyed in front of her eyes. [9]

Hannah’s manager Paul Bassis said there was “a strong indication” that Hannah and Eleanor would stay overnight in jail. “The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets,” he said in sarcasm. Last year, Hannah was taken into custody after voicing her opposition to the building of the Keystone XL pipeline in front of the White House.[34] A press conference is expected to be arranged sometime soon. KETK spoke with Eleanor Fairchild back in 2010 regarding the Keystone Pipeline, when she said “I really wish it wouldn’t come across here. but if it does come across here it should be built in a way that’s as safe as possible.” Bassis tells KETK, Hannah has “always been sympathetic to Texas landowners who oppose the government taking their land for pipeline pathways.” She was arrested back in August of 2011 in front of the White House in protest to the same pipeline. Hannah’s publicist claims Fox News’ Sean Hannity will bail her out of jail, after a promise to do so the last time she was a guest on his show. Bassis says he has been in contact with Hannity, and that they are expecting that he will follow through with his commitment. She is best know for her roles in Splash, Blade Runner, Roxanne, Wall Street, Steel Magnolias and Kill Bill.[25] Hannah, 51, and the site’s property owner, Eleanor Fairchild, were arrested after standing in front of an excavator that was clearing trees and brush to make way for the pipeline’s construction. [20] Hannah, 51, was being held in the Wood County Jail, according to jail records. She and landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, were taken into custody at a property near the intersection of Highway 154 and FM 2869 after standing in front of an excavator and other construction equipment. [24]According to the arrest sheet obtained by ET, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, was arrested for criminal trespass and obstructing passageway, while Hannah was arrested for criminal trespass and resisting arrest. The actress’ manager, Paul Bassis, reportedly told The Associated Press that there was “a strong indication” that they would be held at Wood County Jail overnight. [32] The landowner, Eleanor Fairchild, was also charged with criminal trespass and obstructing a passageway. She bonded out of jail late Thursday. Hannah is charged with criminal trespass for blocking an excavator by blocking its path. Earlier that afternoon, Wood County deputies asked the two to leave, and they refused. They were then arrested, and are currently held in the Wood County Justice Center. [48]

Last August, Hannah was arrested at a pipeline protest outside the White House. In 2010, Fairchild, the Wood County property owner voiced her concerns on the pipeline that had yet to start work in Texas. [48] A news release from the Tar Sands Blockade said Hannah was arrested after walking with a group including Fairchild in front of TransCanada machinery. It is not Hannah’s first arrest in connection with pipeline protests. She was arrested last year at the White House during a protest organized by a group called Tar Sands Action. That day, she joined about 100 other protestors to sit on the sidewalk outside the White House. [24]

Hannah and Fairchild were protesting near Texas 154 and FM 2869 and had been standing in front of construction equipment. To provide access for TransCanada’s pipeline, they have condemned several acres of Fairchild’s farm and she as well as other landowners are angry that their land can be taken away from them. [33] The women were taken into custody about 4 p.m. at property near Texas 154 and FM 2869. They had been standing in front of an excavator and other construction equipment, according to a statement issued by Tar Sands Blockade, a group supporting protests of the project. Several acres of Fairchild’s farm have been condemned through eminent domain to provide access for TransCanada’s pipeline to cross her property. Like other Northeast Texas landowners, she has opposed the process used to take her land and raised environmental concerns about the project.[13]

Hannah stood in front of an excavator being used to clear trees and brush in order to build the pipeline, Bassis said. Joining her was the site’s property owner, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, whose land was taken by eminent domain for the project, he said. [22]Bassis tells KETK, Hannah and a woman, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, were taken into custody at a property near the intersection of Hwy. 154 and FM 2869 after standing in front of an excavator and other construction equipment. [25]

The actress was arrested on Thursday for standing in front of the earth-moving machines that were about to take the trees down in order to make room for excavations. Hannah was not the only one who was protesting at that time; she was accompanied by the site’s owner, Eleanor Fairchild, 78. [27] Hannah, 51, was arrested with landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, who was jailed on charges of criminal trespass and obstructing a highway passage. [42]

What landed Hannah behind bars in the first place? Hannah was supposedly protesting the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, CBS News reports. [5]The pair are not the first to be booked into the Wood County Jail for protesting the pipeline; five others were previously arrested for attempting to stop TransCanada’s construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. [33] Daryl, who has starred in dozens of movies including Kill Bill and Splash, was also arrested in August 2011 while protesting against the Keystone XL pipeline in Washington. [41] The Kill Bill actress was one of several activists arrested in August 2011 for protesting in Washington. Construction of the Keystone XL began this summer. [37]

According to sources, Hannah is an active environmentalist who has been involved with several other feats of activism. It was during her 2006 protest of a South Central Farm that she chained herself to a tree for three weeks to a walnut tree. She was also arrested on August 30, 2011 in front of the White House for participating in a sit-in opposing the Keystone XL pipeline. [19] Daryl Hannah made many other protests against the pipeline. She was, in fact arrested last year because she protested against the pipeline project in front of the White House. [27]

Daryl Hannah was arrested (again) Thursday, this time in Texas for protesting the creation of an oil pipeline. [4] Everyone’s favorite mermaid, Daryl Hannah, was arrested in northeast Texas Thursday after she and a friend were protesting a pipeline that traveled from Canada to the Gulf. [19] Not funny, Abrams! HOUSTON (AP) – Actress Daryl Hannah of “Splash” fame has been jailed in northeast Texas during a protest against an oil pipeline designed to bring crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. [49] Updated: 7:57 am, Fri Oct 5, 2012. WINNSBORO — A Hollywood actress and Northeast Texas landowner were arrested Thursday afternoon as they protested construction of a pipeline that will carry Canadian crude oil through the region. [13] Thursday’s protest was one piece of continuing civil disobedience in response to construction of the pipeline designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries. Wansley said his office made five earlier arrests in connection with protests. [13] The pipeline is designed to bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries along the Texas coast. Daryl has argued its construction could lead to a life-threatening oil spill or air contamination. [37]

” Oil and tar sands are two different things — They don’t take all that sand out of it before they send it through that pipeline,” she added, explaining, “I’m a farmer – it takes equipment only a little time to wear holes when dealing with sand.” Fairchild noted that her husband worked in the oil industry for 50 years, and was senior vice president of a Texas oil company. Hannah agreed with Fairchild, saying that the great-grandmother of five “doesn’t want that toxic, corrosive substance going through her property.” [12] The two women were reportedly arrested for blocking heavy equipment that was to be used to help construct the pipeline as it attempted to pass through Fairchild’s Texas farm. Hannah reached star status in the 80′s film Splash in which she starred alongside Tom Hanks. She has starred in dozens of movies including; Grumpy Old Men, Kill Bill, Steel Magnolias and The Pope of Greenwich Village. Her latest movie endeavor is the 2012 movie Eldorado. [19] Hannah, of Splash and Kill Bill fame, has been a prominent activist for some time, having been arrested in August 2011 during a protest of a pipeline in Washington. [32] Hannah has been a longtime environmental activist. In August 2011, she was arrested for protesting the same pipeline project in Washington, DC, reports The Associated Press. She joined hundreds of other activists and scientists who opposed the project. [21] Hannah is a well-known environmental activist and was also arrested last year for protesting against the pipeline outside the White House. [14] In August 2011, Hannah and others were arrested in D.C. after holding a sit-in protest outside the White House in opposition to the oil pipeline’s expansion. [8] Hannah was last arrested in August 2011 after a sit-down protest of the Keystone in front of the White House. “We cannot risk these precious resources and we cannot shackle ourselves to this type of destructive energy future when we have solutions available to us,” Hannah earlier told ABC News. [45] Hannah was last arrested in late August 2011 after a sit-in protest of the Keystone in front of the White House. [44]

Hannah was also arrested in August 2011 while protesting a pipeline in Washington. [35] We heard the machines beeping and saw black smoke billowing, and we said enough. It was a sudden moment of inspiration and frustration,” Hannah said, hours after the two were released with criminal charges including trespassing. “It’s most ridiculous that she was arrested for trespassing on her own land. That would piss off most Texans,” Hannah added, laughing. Fairchild may not have planned to land herself in jail, but she calls this a success in her drive to draw attention to the pipeline since the “media doesn’t cover it like they should.”[12] Hannah’s rep Paul Bassis released a statement following the arrest explaining that Fairchild actually owned the property on which the pipeline is slated for construction. He adds that it was purchased from her with knowledge or consent using eminent domain. [47] We acquire an easement – similar to a water, sewer or utility line that runs through most of our properties. The pipeline, like utilities we rely on, is buried but ownership of the property never changes hands and the landowner maintains the economic rights to the surface,” he added. Hannah and Fairchild maintain that Fairchild still pays taxes on the easement between her land and the pipeline construction, and that it is unfair that she has been blocked from entering or planting around it. [12]

Hannah has made protesting the construction of the XLl Pipeline a personal project. She says Fairchild’s land is just one of the stops she has made along the route of the pipeline. “I was really interested to meet a lot of the farmers, ranchers and landowners who are fighting this battle. [10] Said Hannah to KLTV about Thursday’s arrest: “I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of Trans Canada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain.” Check out more of this week’s Pop culture news, including an American Idol judge feud, Mitt Romney mentioning Big Bird during the first presidential debate and more at Bravetta’s blog tulsaworld.com/pop. [8] Hannah, 51, was in Winnsboro, Texas, on Oct. 4 to offer support for landowner Eleanor Fairchild, whose property was seized by eminent domain for the project. [45] Mr Bassis said Daryl and Texas landowner Eleanor Fairchild were standing in front of heavy equipment brought on to the woman’s property in Winnsboro. He said the two women were being taken to the Wood County Jail. [41] Hannah and 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild, whose Winnsboro farm fell along the construction route, stood in front of the company’s heavy equipment in an attempt to stop the $7 billion project. [34]

According to People, the 51-year-old actress and her 78-year-old cohort Eleanor Fairchild, who’s also the landowner of part of that scheduled pipeline site, ” stood on equipment on Fairchild’s Winnsboro farm to halt attempts at building the Keystone XL pipeline.” [39] Actress is taken into custody along with landowner Eleanor Fairchild after they stood in the way of heavy equipment being used to build the southern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline. [45]

The two women stood in front of heavy equipment being used to build a section of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild’s farm in Winnsboro, a town about 100 miles east of Dallas. [30]

Keystone XL, Enbridge, Shell and Kinder Morgan: like ex-boyfriends who wont take the hint. David Suzuki calls on people to risk arrest this August in order to halt construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Albertas tar sands to Texas refineries. [12] TransCanada, the company in charge of installing the Keystone XL pipeline, reassured inhabitants in the region that the construction will be “safe and reliable”. [27] The Kill Bill star went to jail with a 78-year-old great-grandmother for ‘trespassing’ in protest against Keystone XL Pipeline construction. [12] Keystone XL update: U.S. President Barack Obama welcomed the company’s plan to start construction for part of the pipeline, despite the fact that the rest of the route has yet to be approved. [12]

The Keystone XL pipeline has long been a controversial issue ever since it was announced. [23] Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Friday that delaying approval for the Keystone XL pipeline could end the project entirely. “I’m not sure this project would survive that kind of delay,” Flaherty. [12]

The actress and activist, who has already travelled to many spots along the pipeline route, was arrested for criminal trespass and obstructing a passageway. She was later released from Wood County jail in Texas at midnight after posting a bond of $4,500 (£2,800). [30] This booking photo provided by the Wood County Sheriff shows actress Daryl Hannah after her arrest in Winnsboro, Texas, Thursday. [8] Daryl Hannah, as photographed by the Wood County, Texas, sheriff’s office after her arrest. [22]

“We went in, sneaked in, and went on the easement, and stopped the workers,” explained Fairchild. Wood County authorities say TransCanada rightfully owns the land they are working on through an easement. Photos given to us by Hannah’s publicist show the two women holding up their hands while standing in front of TransCanada equipment. The Wood County Sheriff’s office gave protestors a warning, and when the protestors didn’t leave, they were forced to arrest both women. Wood County Sheriff Bill Wansley tells us,”The Sheriff’s Department will continue doing their job and treat everyone the same. [11] Back in 2010, Fairchild protested the pipeline project. Fairchild has owned her family farm for more than 20 years. Wood county sheriff’s officials told us off camera yesterday that both Hannah and Fairchild started their protest by laying down in front of an excavator. [10]

Bonds had not set by 6 p.m., and officials with the Wood County sheriff’s office said no one would be available to speak about developments in the pipeline protests until Friday morning. Hannah is best known for her roles in “Splash,” “Blade Runner,” “Roxanne,” “Wall Street,” “Steel Magnolias” and “Kill Bill.” [24] Hannah was charged with criminal trespassing and Resisting Arrest by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Her bond was set at $4,500 dollars. [19] The famed 51-year-old Splash star was arrested on Thursday for criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, a Wood County Texas Jail official tells Hollywood.com. While she did have to spend some time behind bars, Hannah bonded out around midnight. [5]

A 78-year-old woman was also arrested with the star. “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother,” Daryl’s manager Paul Bassis told The Associated Press. [37] Hannah’s manager says the actress and “a rural Texas great-grandmother” were arrested about 100 miles east of Dallas in the town of Winnsboro. [49]

The 51-year-old actress was arrested, again, on Thursday evening (October 4) in Texas. This time, the “Kill Bill” star faced trouble from the law for protesting against the creation of an oil pipeline. [36] The Kill Bill star- unlike most actors or actresses who get arrested for the usual BS, say, DUIs or shoplifting- was arrested in Texasfor protesting the creation of an oil pipeline. [7]

The southern section of the pipeline — the project Hannah was protesting — will take oil from the glutted Cushing, Okla., storage hub to refineries in Texas. President Barack Obama lent his support to the project, which is being built. The northern section of the $7.6 billion project, which would take crude across the Canadian border into the United States, was rejected by Obama last year on environmental and water supply grounds about its route through Nebraska. [22]

” It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of -state activists have chosen to break the law and tie up scarce law enforcement resources to deal with these matters. TransCanada, like American companies operating in Canada, has the legal authority to build this pipeline under Texas state law,” said TransCanada’s Howard.[12] Yesterday afternoon TransCanada released the following statement. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out of state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property. It is also unfortunate that she and other professional activists have chosen to engage in illegal acts, putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk, along with trying to prevent thousands of Americans from providing for their families by helping to build the gulf coast project and the energy security it will provide.” [11] A spokesman for TransCanada refutes the claims. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” company spokesman David Dodson said. [37]

Hannah has long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline. [49] Hannah pointed out that although U.S. President Barack Obama denied TransCanada the permit for the pipeline to cross the US-Canada border in January, connections between Washington and TransCanada are enabling the continued construction of the disputed crude link. The Obama administration’s Secretary of State “Hillary Clinton’s deputy campaign director when she was running for president is now TransCanada’s chief lobbyist. They were obviously able to strike a very cozy deal,” Hannah said, referring to Paul Elliot, now TransCanada’s director of government relations. Hannah said that despite her arrest, she won’t back down. [12]

Crews with Michels Pipeline Construction work on clearing land Thursday in Wood County for TransCanada’s oil pipeline. [13] Houstonian Alejandro de la Torre chained himself to the ground at a pipeline construction site in Wood County, Texas. “He was basically holding on to a large ball of concrete in the ground,” said Ron Seifert, spokesperson for Tar Sands Blockade. [50] A spokesperson with the Tar Sands Blockade says the group, including Hannah, ran in front of construction equipment, and were detained by Wood County Deputies. [51] Wood County authorities said the Hannah and a landowner ran in front of construction equipment, and were detained by deputies. [48]

Hannah is a longtime environmental activist and is best known for her acting roles in “Splash” and “Blade Runner.” She’s accused of blocking construction equipment near the Tyler/Longview area by laying in front of it. She has been charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest. [52] Hannah was arrested with a landowner, Eleanor Fairchild, who was charged with criminal trespass and obstructing a passageway.[25] Hannah, 51, who starred in films including Splash, Blade Runner and Steel Magnolias, was held alongside Eleanor Fairchild, 78, a local landowner. [30] The owner of the property, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, also protested, Bassis added. [21]

Bassis told the media that Daryl and Eleanor stood in front of the excavator to prevent it from taking the trees down. Ms. Fairchild agreed to take part in the protest because her land was taken by eminent domain for the project to be enacted. The 78-year-old woman claims her property was abused by TransCanada; therefore, she requested authorities to remove the excavators from her territory.[27] Earlier Thursday, about six miles north of where Hannah and Fairchild were taken into custody, several other protesters continued a crusade that began Oct. 1, sitting in trees on a TransCanada easement across property owned by David Daniel on FM 2088. [13]

Several acres of Fairchild’s farm have been condemned by pipeline builder TransCanada. She has said she opposes TransCanada’s plan to transport heavy tar-sands crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. [24] The president allowed the southern section of the TransCanada project, which is meant to carry oil from Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub to oil refineries in Texas. The pipeline, which is supposed to ship more than half a million barrels of oil sands-derived crude from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast, when both sections of the project are completed, was described as “safe and reliable” by a representative of TransCanada. [14] The pipeline, which is being built by TransCanada Corp, will be used to transport more than half a million barrels of oil sands-derived crude a day from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast. [20]

The pipeline will transport crude oil from Canada’s tar sands to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast. [23]

The $7 billion project, designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries, is currently under construction in Texas.[45] TransCanada Corp.’ s project would ship over half a billion barrels of oil from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast. [21]

Several acres of Fairchild’s farm have been condemned by TransCanada. She said she opposes TransCanada’s plan to transport heavy tar-sands crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. [41]

Is it — in — all Americans are water supply our food supply. It’s an export pipeline only in the greater good is only for the pockets of trans Canada — has nothing to do with our benefit. Wonder why these professional activists who engage in these illegal activities. Are trying to prevent thousands of Americans from providing for their families by helping to build the Gulf Coast project and energy security that it provides. You know the the ecological concerns while somewhat valid we haven’t heard of a whole bunch of people dying from these pipelines or poisoning our wells are poisoning our land. Why why that that you’re still — in this position they’re taking this position. [43]

Daryl has previously been arrested for protesting against the pipeline in Washington D.C. in 2011. She and other activists believe it will carry heavy, acidic crude oil that could corrode a metal pipeline and lead to a spill. They also claim that by not refining the oil, it would further contaminate the air in a region that struggles with pollution.[2] Daryl was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest and paid $4,000 in collective bond. She was arrested back in August for protesting a similar pipeline expansion in Washington D.C. [36]

Hannah was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest, paying a $1,000 and a $3,000 bond, respectively. She was released around midnight. [7] In order to be released, Hannah had to pay a $1,500 bond on the criminal trespass charge and $3,000 for resisting arrest. [5]

The spokeswoman confirmed the news that Daryl Hannah was retained on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest. [27] Booking information from the Sheriff’s Office said Hannah was held on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest. [22]

The protesters remained perched in the trees late Thursday. Before Hannah’s arrest, Wood County Sheriff Billy Wansley voiced his impatience with protests by what he termed “outside environmental activists.” He said the sheriff’s office was working to protect the rights of TransCanada, landowners and protesters. [13] I’m concerned about our water supply and I’m concerned about the pipe itself,” said Wood County resident, Eleanor Fairchild. [10]

While environmentalists scored a victory last year with the Obama Administration’s decision to re-route the pipeline away from an environmentally-sensitive area of Nebraska, construction of the $7B is already underway on the southern portion. Fairchild, 78, had her land taken by eminent domain for this portion of the pipeline.[44] TransCanada, which is behind the construction of the reported $7 billion pipeline, has said that the pipeline would be “the safest ever built.” [32]Congressional Republicans gave President Barack Obama 60 days to decide whether TransCanada should be approved for a permit so the pipeline could cross the Canadian border and snake down to the Texas coast. [33] TransCanada has said that it will be one of the safest pipelines ever built, but critics argue that spills can still happen because the crude oil can still corrode a metal pipe. The pipeline also became a hot-button political issue earlier this year when President Obama denied the company a permit to build the pipeline. [21] Protesters argue the pipeline would be unsafe because it would be carrying heavy, acidic crude oil that could more easily corrode a metal pipe, which would lead to a spill. TransCanada says its pipeline would be the safest ever built, and that the crude is no dirtier than oil currently arriving from Venezuela or parts of California. [30]

According to the news source, the protesters have taken the stance that the creation of the pipeline could lead to a spill, claiming that it would carry “heavy, acidic crude oil that could more easily corrode a metal pipe.” [32]

North Dakota where the unemployment rate — the lowest in the country. You know do you — these things there’ll assay. For the greater good of the nation where people can actually — their kids we should do this. If you you’re mistaken on the hundreds of thousands of jobs it’s three. Thousand temporary construction jobs and that’s it because the only reason they want this pipeline is to make. It — the coast so that they can export the oil this has nothing to do with energy security it has nothing to do with jobs. [43] Gold pipeline protests that led to — actors there’ll — and Texas land owner — their child trying to stop the pipelines construction. Both planning themselves behind bars. [43] Obama has supported the southern part of the pipeline, which takes oil from Oklahoma to Texas. [21] The Southern part of the pipeline will transport oil from Cushing, Oklahoma to refineries in Texas. [27]

The protest took place outside Winnsboro, Texas, about 80 miles east of Dallas, said Hannah’s agent, Paul Bassis. [22] The information was provided by Hannah’s agent, Paul Bassis, who added that the protest took place at Winnsboro, Texas, about 80 miles east of Dallas, the Associated Press reports. [27]

Hannah was arrested Thursday in the East Texas town of Winnsboro after staging a small protest with a landowner there. [26]

Hannah is no stranger to the back of police cars. Besides her arrest Thursday and in 2011, Hannah was arrested with 30 others in June 2009 after blocking traffic on a major highway in West Virginia to protest mountaintop coal mining. She was also arrested in 2006 while protesting the bulldozing of an urban farm in Los Angeles.[18]

” said Hannah. Hannah says she has spoken to people all along the pipeline. She hopes her arrest will bring awareness to certain issues that surround the pipeline. “Maybe it will awaken the conversation so that people can really get a full understanding of the dangers are of what the Tar Sands really is because it’s a very different thing than a regular pipeline,” said Hannah. We are told that Hannah’s publicist will be holding a press conference later this morning. [10] Thursday’s arrest was not Hannah’s first in connection with protests of the pipeline. She was jailed in 2011 in Washington D.C., after a protest organized by a group called Tar Sands Action. That day, she joined about 100 other protesters to sit on the sidewalk outside the White House. [13] Hannah was also jailed last year in Washington D.C. for protesting with 100 others outside the White House. [33]

“The pipeline is coming a mile through my land. I started finding out what tar sands are, and I don’t think they should be in the United States,” Fairchild said.[12] Author and activist Bill McKibben along with NASA climate scientist Jim Hansenhave called the pipeline and further tar sands development “game over” for the climate. [28]

The 2,154 mile Keystone pipeline is proposed to extend from Alberta, Canada through several U.S. states, all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. [19]

PHI@MIA: Rollins lines a game-tying single to left

PHILADELPHIA — It had been inevitable, but it is finally official.

Friday’s 2-1 loss to the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park eliminated the Phillies from the 2012 postseason. It will be the first time since ’06 they will not pop champagne bottles in a clubhouse celebration. It will be the first time in six years they will watch the postseason like everybody else: from their couches and recliners.

“It’s disappointing,” Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee said. “I think everybody here could agree with that. We expected to win this division and make the postseason and win the World Series ultimately. But obviously that’s not going to happen now. We’ve got to finish out this year strong and play the game the right way.”

The only goal for the Phillies at this point is finishing the season with a winning record. They will have to go 4-1 to do that, or 3-2 to finish at .500. But the Phillies, who were 14 games under .500 on July 13, have been struggling as the season comes to its conclusion, losing five of their last six games.

“That’s getting tough, too,” manager Charlie Manuel said of finishing 4-1. “We’re kind of dragging right now. But that’s no excuse for us not to score some runs.”

Marlins left fielder Bryan Petersen hit a leadoff double in the ninth inning to spark the game-winning rally. After a Jose Reyes groundout, Phillies right-hander Joshn Lindblom intentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton to put runners on first and second. Carlos Lee singled to left field to score Petersen to win it.

The Phillies’ Lee did his part Friday. He pitched splendidly, allowing three hits, one run and striking out five in seven innings. But his night followed a familiar path: No run support.

He allowed a home run to Stanton in the fourth inning to give Miami a 1-0 lead. It appeared to be plenty as Marlins left-hander Mark Buehrle completely shut down the Phillies’ offense. He allowed three hits in the second inning, but Ty Wigginton ended the inning when he overran third base on an infield single from Michael Martinez.

Buehrle would retire the next 14 batters he faced until Wigginton singled to left field with two outs in the seventh.

But John Mayberry Jr. started the eighth inning with a double to left field. And after Martinez’s fielder’s choice moved Mayberry to third, Manuel had Erik Kratz pinch-hit for Lee. But Kratz popped up to second baseman Donovan Solaro for the second out.

Jimmy Rollins followed with a single to left field to score Mayberry to tie the game.

Lee would not take the loss, but he will enter his final start of the season Wednesday in Washington at 6-8 with a 3.12 ERA.

    “Lee was outstanding,” Manuel said.

“It’s just one of those things,” Lee said. “You’ve got to give Buehrle some credit there. He kept us from scoring a run until J-Roll came through with two outs in the eighth. That was a big hit by him. Buehrle got it done. There’s a reason why he’s been throwing as long as he has. He’s a pretty good pitcher.”

The Phillies won a franchise-record 102 games last season, but they could become just the sixth team in baseball history to follow a 100-win season with a losing season.

They can still finish with a winning record.

But the postseason? That will have to wait until next year.

“Somebody just had to win a game, didn’t they?” Manuel said, referring to the fact St. Louis only needed to win one game to eliminate the Phillies. “Of course a game is hard to win sometimes.”

“We’ll try to come in next Spring Training and play the game the right way,” Lee said, “try to come in next Spring Training and start off better. That’s what got us. We got ourselves in a pretty good hole early. It was too big of a hole to dig ourselves out of. We played really well the second half. We definitely made our season more respectable. Considering how bad we were in the first half, we were really fortunate to be where we were these last two weeks.”

Phillies try to stay in hunt vs. NL Wild Card leaders

    By Teddy Cahill / MLB.com | 9/20/2012 11:49 PM ET

video thumbnailKendrick speaks about the NL pennant race

At the start of the season, this weekend’s three-game series between the Braves and Phillies appeared likely to have playoff implications. And it will. But instead of matching two teams competing for the National League East title, it will feature the NL Wild Card leader and a team hoping to stay in contention for the other spot.

The Braves enter the series with a commanding lead in the Wild Card standings and will have a chance to clinch a spot in the postseason this weekend, as their magic number is five. The Phillies, meanwhile, are one of three teams within four games of the Cardinals, who currently lead the race for the second NL Wild Card spot.

The Phillies will turn to right-hander Kyle Kendrick as they try to stay in the hunt. In his last start, Kendrick lost to the last-place Astros.

“It’s tough to lose to a team like that,” Kendrick said. “I can’t say I did my job.”

Right-hander Tommy Hanson will start for the Braves. Since returning from a strained back that forced him onto the disabled list at the end of July, Hanson has battled inconsistency. But his last three starts seem to have been a step in the right direction. In those starts, Hanson has a 3.31 ERA and has struck out 20 batters in 16 1/3 innings.

Hanson pitched well in his most recent start, a 5-4 Braves victory against the Nationals on Saturday. He overcame a pair of errors that led to two unearned runs to strike out seven and walk one batter in five innings, giving the Braves a chance to complete their comeback.

“I thought Tommy did a great job, the next three innings, settling down,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He kept his head and kept us in the ballgame.

Braves: Simmons, Janish injured in Marlins series
The Braves lost both starting shortstop Andrelton Simmons and backup Paul Janish to left shoulder injuries in their series against the Marlins this week. Simmons jammed his shoulder Monday and Janish dislocated his Tuesday. Neither played in the Braves’ 3-0 victory Wednesday.

Gonzalez said Simmons could be able to play in Friday’s series opener in Philadelphia, but Janish would be out longer. Janish returned to Atlanta on Wednesday for further tests to determine whether he will need surgery or not.

“They’re going to do all the tests, whatever they got to do,” Gonzalez said. “He won’t play for a while right now. He won’t play for a while because it’s significant.”

    Phillies: Rollins’ hot streak continues
Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-5 Thursday in the Phillies’ 16-1 victory against the Mets, giving the shortstop a hit in 16 of Philadelphia’s 18 games in September. Rollins has reached base via a hit or a walk in all but one game this month.

Rollins is hitting .338 with seven home runs and a .635 slugging percentage this month. The Phillies improved to 9-1 in September when Rollins scores at least one run.

    Worth noting
    • Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, who will likely be playing for the final time in Philadelphia, is 8-for-26 with two home runs in his career against Kendrick. • Braves closer Craig Kimbrel has 38 saves this season, tied with Cardinals closer Jason Motte for the most in the National League. Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon is tied for third with 36 saves.

Phillies‘ Path to the Postseason: Sept. 21, 2012

     Phillies’ eight-run first00:01:42
9/20/12: The Phillies jump out to a big lead, scoring eight runs in the first inning against the Mets

NEW YORK — The Phillies keep winning.

Unfortunately for them, so do the Cardinals.

The Phillies remain four games behind the Cardinals for the second National League Wild Card with just 12 games to play following Thursday’s 16-1 victory over the Mets at Citi Field. Even if the Phillies finish 9-3, they will need the Cardinals to finish no better than 5-7 just to tie. But remember, even if Philadelphia keeps winning and St. Louis inexplicably collapses, the Phillies still need the Dodgers and Brewers to lose, too. The Phillies are alive, but barely.

Friday’s key games to watch (all times ET)

    Cardinals (Carpenter, 0-0) at Cubs (Volstad, 3-10), 2:20 p.m. Preview >

    Braves (Hanson, 12-8) at Phillies (Kendrick, 9-11), 7:05 p.m. Preview >

    Brewers (Marcum, 5-4) at Nationals (Jackson, 9-10), 7:05 p.m. Preview >

    Dodgers (Blanton, 1-4) at Reds (Arroyo, 12-8), 7:10 p.m. Preview >

    Pirates (Locke, 0-1) at Astros (Gonzalez, 2-1), 8:05 p.m. Preview >

    D-backs (Miley, 15-10) at Rockies (Pomeranz, 1-9), 8:10 p.m. Preview >

    Padres (Kelly, 2-1) at Giants (Vogelsong, 12-9), 10:15 p.m. Preview >

    Magic numbers
To calculate a team’s magic number, take the number of games it has remaining and add one. Then subtract the difference in the number of losses between that team and its closest pursuer.

    Tiebreaker scenarios
A tiebreaker game will be played to determine a division winner, even if the tied clubs are assured of participating in the postseason. If a division championship tiebreaker is necessary, the head-to-head record between the clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two clubs are tied for the two Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then the division record will be the next tiebreaker.

Lech Walesa’s Endorses Romneys latest ad….(BTW, is he still alive here on earth because the last time i heard that guys names, was in 1979….?)

Lech Walesa‘s Endorses Romneys latest ad….The campaign is saved! you could not even write that one up if you tried it….if you said to me…hey don…come up with a joke or a skit with romney in it…and then bring up some world leader from say…the 80s…i would not even think for one second to come up an ad that says that lech wlaenza…endorsed it…does willard really think anyone knows him let alone cares about that so called endoresement and is he still alive to endorse things…i know what the pope endorsed in that ad, is a quote from jesus….its not even the popes quote..this is just brilliant…

Lech Walesa’s Endorses Romneys latest ad….(BTW, is he still alive here on earth because the last time i heard that guys names, was in 1979….?)

NEW YORK –  TITLE: “Be Not Afraid”

    LENGTH: 30 seconds.

AIRING:  The ad is on the web. Romney‘s campaign said it will air on  television beginning Friday, but will not say where.

KEY IMAGES: The spot opens with text that asks “Who Shares Your Values?”  followed by a voice that says President Barack Obama “used his health care plan  to declare war on religion, forcing religious institutions to go against their  faith.” As the announcer talks, Obama appears in grainy, black-and-white video  above the newspaper headline, “Obama’s Insurance Decision Declares War on  Religion.” The ad then cuts to color video of Romney last month on his visit to  Poland, including an excerpt from a speech he gave there. “In 1979, a son of  Poland, Pope John Paul II, spoke words that would bring down an empire. Be not  afraid,” Romney says. A series of images flash by: a photo of Pope John Paul II,  arms outstretched, holding a crozier; John Paul talking with ex-Polish President  Lech Walesa, the former leader of the Solidarity labor movement that helped end  Communist rule. Next is video of Walesa and Romney shaking hands during Romney’s  visit. Text on the screen says: “Endorsed by Lech Walesa” as a voice asks, “When  religious freedom is threatened, who do you want to stand with?”

ANALYSIS:  This latest ad by Romney’s campaign and the Republican National  Committee is the former Massachusetts’ governor’s most direct bid yet for  religious voters.

Obama’s health care overhaul split religious groups, with Catholic bishops  and conservative Protestants strongly opposed to provisions that permitted women  to buy insurance coverage for abortion, provided they used their own money. But  liberal Protestant denominations supported the law, as did many religious orders  of Catholic nuns, and the trade group representing Catholic hospitals.

Religious objections arose again when the administration ruled that most  employers, including faith-affiliated hospitals and nonprofits —  but not  churches  —  will have to provide health insurance that includes birth control  as a preventive service covered free of charge. The bishops have been fiercely  lobbying against the rule. Obama promised to change the requirement so that  insurance companies and not faith-affiliated employers would pay for the  coverage. But details have not been worked out. And not only the bishops, but  Catholic hospitals and some other religious leaders generally supportive of  Obama’s policies are saying the compromise appears to be unworkable.

Lis Smith, an Obama campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement that the  president believes “women should have access to free contraception as part of  their health insurance and he has done so in a way that respects religious  liberty.”

The ad does not name the specific policy on birth control or any others, but  instead repeats the broad claim by Obama critics that the administration aims to  restrict religious freedom overall.

The ad  —  and the issue  —  also gave Romney a way to talk about religion  without discussing his own. The presumptive GOP presidential nominee, who is  Mormon, has avoided direct mention of his church while campaigning. The spot  links Romney with the late, beloved John Paul. The pope was a hero not only to  Catholics, but to people across faiths for his defense of Christian orthodoxy,  stand against communism and personal struggle as a young man living under the  Nazis. The phrase, “Be Not Afraid,” is from the Bible, but was used so often by  John Paul that it became known as his trademark.

Obama supporters say Romney’s focus on Walesa’s endorsement isn’t the full  story. Walesa effectively backed Romney when they met. But the current leaders  of the Solidarity movement distanced themselves from Romney, citing his “attacks  against trade unions and labor rights.”

Catholic voters, who were about one-fourth of the 2008 electorate, are key in  any presidential race. The candidate who wins the most Catholic votes usually  wins the White House.

While Obama won the overall Catholic vote in 2008, 54 percent to 45 percent,  he lost the votes of white Catholics, 52 percent to 47 percent, according to  exit polls.

An Aug. 1 poll by the Pew Research Center found that more than half of  Catholics who had heard about the birth control rule side with the Catholic  bishops. So far this year, neither Obama nor Romney has established a consistent  lead among Catholic voters. Obama had a narrow edge overall in the Pew survey,  but Romney was slightly ahead among white Catholics.

If You Look at This phillies team last week at This Time, and Then Again Today, its Not The same Team….

The line up over the last couple games have been infuriating and I
dunno, I guess that ATL sweep last week, did the team in because
everyone from the GM to the announcers to everyone….I guess….has
conceded this season to be done….Unless we were / are mathematically
out of it last week or leading into Julys trade deadline…I dont get
why we had to give the hell up this week….I am baffled about it
because we have two months of ball left to play this season….thats an
eternity and we now guy named rosenberg for gods sakes…pitching but he does throw 96 MPH
fast balls…and then the rest of the team…I dont even know half the names or who they are like
knudson or frankson and the the pitcher that let up the 4th decker HR
last night…I see Dominic browns back so that means hes up for good
now…meaning they are bringing up the minor leaguers so fine…wasnt he batting 223 in the minors all year? Its fine…if the
season is done for them…I give up too…Now I find out the dodger team
tapped lee off waivers and so the team has to now match
it….regardless….even though mayberry was technically safe…he
should have NOT have gone home being down by one run….whatever…Rams
start soon. Terp Football is up in three weeks….and you know…they
both are rebuilding those teams lets just say…aka suck…What a waste
of a season…I still dont get why we gave up last week….like who the
hell wants to looks towards 13 now..in the middle of the season and/or
in august..I mean I guess we are way out of it and I am not accepting
it…..I just think funnier things have happened in baseball let alone
at the ends of years..i think someone came back from being 11 games
under in sept to maybe win it all or maybe they just got in and
again…I think that was within the last few years/…..

Kendrick steps in admirably, but Phils fall

Manuel discusses the bullpen’s strong effort

PHILADELPHIA — Kyle Kendrick was the obvious choice to step into the rotation on short notice against the D-backs on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. His versatility is part of what makes him valuable. And it really came in handy when Joe Blanton was traded just a few hours before his scheduled start.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Kendrick will become a full-time starter in 2013. Heck, it doesn’t even guarantee that he’ll get the assignment next time that spot rolls around, although there’s no apparent option at the moment.

“I don’t know what it means,” pitching coach Rich Dubee said. “I have no idea what will happen.”

In his first start since July 6, Kendrick threw 63 pitches in four innings of what turned out to be a 4-2 loss to the D-backs. He gave up five hits and three runs, two of them earned. He came into the game with a 21-inning scoreless streak that ended when Justin Upton blasted a solo homer with one out in the second.

Charlie Manuel talked about Kendrick increasing his pitch count next time out, but hedged slightly when asked if that meant he’ll be starting for the rest of the season.

“Right now, that’s what we’ve got,” Manuel said. “We’ve got to have five starters.”

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. dismissed the idea that Kendrick was auditioning for next season.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “I think Kyle knows his role. He’s going to get an opportunity to pitch. We’ll see. His best role for us may still be to pitch out of the bullpen. He’s pitched great out of the bullpen. And that may be his best place.”

Said Kendrick: “I had gotten into a little groove, you could say. I definitely was throwing good out of the bullpen. But I’m happy to be starting again, that’s for sure. I think they already know a lot about me. I just have to go out there and pitch good. That’s the main thing. Maybe teams, not just this team, see that [versatility]. It doesn’t do anything but help. But obviously, I want to be in the rotation somewhere for a long time.”

Things have been changing quickly around the Phillies this week. Somebody will have to start against the Braves next Wednesday, but the way things are going, anything’s possible. Amaro made it clear he’s still working the phones, looking for possible waiver deals, putting in claims on players he thinks could make the Phillies better.

Meanwhile, at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, right-hander Tyler Cloyd improved his record to 11-1 by beating Pawtucket on Thursday. He allowed one run on three hits in seven innings, lowering his International League-leading ERA to 1.93. The 25-year-old is 14-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 22 overall starts between Double-A Reading and the IronPigs.

“He’s on the radar screen,” Amaro said. “Obviously, he’s pitched very well for us. He just needs to keep pitching well and stay on the radar screen.”

Added Manuel: “I’m sure sooner or later, from what they say about the kid, we’re going to see him. From what I hear of him, he cuts his fastball. If you’re looking at him to light the radar gun up, you’re not going to see that evidently. I’ve been checking on him. At the same time, he’s going to get a shot eventually.”

No matter what role Kendrick is in next season, rebuilding the bullpen will be a priority for the Phillies this winter. And there were indications Friday night that that process may already be under way.

Jeremy Horst, B.J. Rosenberg and Antonio Bastardo combined to throw four hitless innings in relief of Kendrick. Josh Lindblom retired three straight in the ninth after giving up a second-deck homer to Jason Kubel.

“The bullpen did a good job at the end there,” Manuel said. “We had some guys who had clean innings. That’s a good sign.”

That also allowed the Phillies to stay in the game. In fact, it looked as though they had tied it in the bottom of the sixth on Kevin Frandsen‘s two-out single to right with John Mayberry Jr. on second. Mayberry appeared to slide in under the throw from Upton. But home-plate umpire Jim Wolf called him out. The replay indicated that Mayberry was, in fact, safe.

The Phillies weren’t in a position to blame a bad call, though, since they twice had runners doubled off in the early innings and went just 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

“We had chances to score but, of course, we didn’t get a big hit,” Manuel said. “We made some mistakes, some baserunning mistakes.”

Kendrick was the obvious choice to start in Blanton’s place, but there’s not much else that looks clear cut about what the Phillies will do for the rest of the season.

“There are only a handful of guys who have been around since [the Phillies won the World Series in 2008],” Kendrick noted. “It’s crazy. We’re obviously going in a different direction now, trying to get younger. That’s what it looks like. So I’m playing with some new guys. It’s obviously been a trying year. We’ve still got two months left, though. And we’ve got to battle to the end, try to win some ballgames.”

Hamels looks to finish sweep with bounce-back effort

Nationals aim to get offense going in support of Detwiler

    By Zack Meisel / MLB.com | 8/2/2012 6:19 PM ET

    video thumbnail

Hamels issues career-high six walks in loss

Many managers claim they don’t often peer at the standings or pay attention to how rivals are faring.

Nationals skipper Davey Johnson isn’t shy about such topics. Johnson said he follows all 30 teams closely, especially the Braves, who sit 2 1/2 games behind Washington for the National League East lead.

“We’ve still got to play them six more times,” Johnson said. “Now’s just the fun time. They’re playing good. We’re playing good. But you’ve got to play your best today. Today’s all that matters. I never worry about a week from now or something.

“They’ll go through down spells. They’ve got things going. They’re playing really hot, and they haven’t caught us. Last I looked, [over] the last 10 games, our record’s better than theirs. It’s fun. I like a good horse race.”The Nationals and Braves won’t hook up again until later this month. For now, Washington will try to salvage the final contest of its three-game series against the Phillies. On Thursday at Nationals Park, the Nationals will send Ross Detwiler (5-4, 3.24 ERA) to the mound against Philadelphia southpaw Cole Hamels (11-5, 3.31 ERA).

The Nationals activated Jayson Werth from the 60-day disabled list Thursday, and the 33-year-old veteran was in the lineup for Thursday night’s game against the Phillies, playing center field.

Detwiler will face a reformed Phillies offense that no longer has Shane Victorino or Hunter Pence serving as outfielders. Both players were part of trades on Tuesday. Manager Charlie Manuel‘s new-look outfield included Nate Schierholtz, John Mayberry Jr. and Dominic Brown on Wednesday.

Manuel said he’d mix and match and added that Brown — once regarded as the organization’s top prospect — could patrol any of the three outfield positions.

“I might try him at all three,” Manuel said. “Put him out there and let him play a while and see if he can be comfortable and stuff like that. I might try him at all three, see which one he plays best.”

Detwiler will look to last longer atop the hill. He was pulled after 4 2/3 innings during Washington’s 6-0 loss to the Brewers on Friday. He wasn’t thrilled about yielding four runs on seven hits.

“I don’t want to come out of the game ever, especially in a spot like that,” he said. “But I put us in a hole early, and it’s tough to dig out of that hole.”

Phillies: Hamels looking forward to start
    • In his first start since signing a six-year, $144 million contract extension, Hamels took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and six walks in five innings of a 6-1 defeat to the Braves on Friday.

“It was a long week,” Hamels said following the outing. “I don’t think I’ll ever have to experience it again. It’s a long, stressful week. The highs and lows you have as a person or athlete, it was probably the ultimate. To have it during the baseball season was a little different. Guys will go through it during the offseason and obviously don’t have to go out the next day and play.

“I’m glad I can finally try to move past it. I think this start is something I’ll definitely move past. Getting back to the normal routine and keeping my emotions in check, that would be more characteristic of what I’m used to.”

Hamels has beaten the Nationals twice this season, tossing eight innings in each outing.

    • Catcher Carlos Ruiz sat out Wednesday’s contest while battling plantar fasciitis in his left foot. Ruiz leads the Phillies in batting average (.340), home runs (14) and RBIs (58).

“What he’s got is something that on certain days it’s worse than others,” Manuel said.

Nationals: Zimmerman expected to start on Thursday
    • Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has battled various injuries all season. He was held out of the starting lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday after tweaking his back during Sunday’s win over the Brewers. He pinch-hit in the eighth inning on Wednesday and delivered a single before getting caught trying to steal second. He said he expects to start on Thursday.

“Davey kind of likes to give us an extra day at this point in the season just to make sure it gets out of there,” Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman batted .366 with a 1.186 OPS, 10 home runs and 24 RBIs in July.

    • All-Star rookie Bryce Harper put together a pair of hits and a run scored on Wednesday. He entered the game hitting .171 in his previous 18 games.

    Worth noting
    • Entering Wednesday’s action, the Nationals had thrown out just 15 percent of basestealers, the second-worst mark in the Majors.

    • Philadelphia designated infielder Mike Fontenot for assignment on Wednesday and recalled infielder Michael Martinez.
