Actress Daryl Hannah was charged with criminal trespassing on Thursday and then released following her arrest as she stared down an excavator that was clearing ground to begin construction on theKeystone XL pipeline in Texas.

Hannah, known for her roles in Splash and numerous other movies, joined 78-year-old property owner Eleanor Fairchild, whose land in Winnsboro, about 80 miles east of Dallas, was taken by eminent domain for the project, Reuters reported. This was Hannah’s second arrest for protesting Keystone XL, TransCanada Corp.‘ s proposed $7 billion, 1,700-mile-long pipeline that would bring crude originating in the Alberta oil sands to ports on the Gulf of Mexico, south of Houston. She was arrested outside the White House in August 2011, along with fellow actress and activist Tantoo Cardinal, a Métis who grew up near the oil sands, and more than a thousand other protesters. [1] Daryl Hannah has been arrested in Texas. The ‘Kill Bill’ actress was taken into custody for criminal trespassing and resisting arrest and held at the Wood County Jail after she and a landowner stepped in front of machinery to halt the construction of an oil pipeline. Daryl and 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild were hoping to stop the progress of TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipe through the latter’s farmland in Winnsboro – which was subject to a compulsory purchase order for the project – almost a hundred miles east of Dallas. [2]
The pair stood in front of heavy equipment in an effort to halt construction efforts on Fairchild’s farm of the Keystone XL pipeline, reports the AP. Hannah’s manager Paul Bassis says they’ve “arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother” for criminal trespassing. This TransCanada pipeline, which is designed to transport oil from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast refineries in Texas, has long been something Hannah is opposed to. David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, says, “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activitists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” Bassis says there is a “strong indication” both women will be kept overnight in the local jail. “The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great-grandmother off the streets,” adds Bassis. [3] The actress, 51, and landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, reportedly stood on equipment on Fairchild’s Winnsboro farm to halt attempts at building the Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to the Gulf Coast of Texas. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, which is behind the construction of the reported $7 billion pipeline, said in an email to the Associated Press. [4] Hannah and 78-year-old landowner Eleanor Fairchild were reportedly standing in front of equipment on Fairchild’s farm in Winnsboro, Tex. in an attempt to keep the construction from progressing. This isn’t the first time that Hannah has been arrested for protesting the TransCanada pipeline. She was picked up in August 2011 in Washington, where several hundred other individuals were arrested the same month for standing up against the building of the $7 billion pipeline, which will bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries. “”It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,”" David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, said, of Hannah’s recent arrest. He also claimed that the protestors were “”putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.”" [5] Hannah has long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline, designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, said in an email to AP. How can you be arrested for “trespassing” on your own land? Well, anything can happen when a multinational corporation comes in and expropriates your farm for their profit. That’s why actress and activist Daryl Hannah has joined forces with East Texas ranch owner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, to stage a protest against Keystone XL construction on Mrs. Fairchild’s farm. The actress is intent on defending Mrs. Fairchild’s home and business, Fairchild Farms, a portion of which has been expropriated by TransCanada, for its toxic tar sands pipeline. The duo claim their action is inspired by our ongoing tree blockade happening on a neighboring property.[9] Source: Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Hollywood actress, Daryl Hannah has been released from the Wood County Jail after she was arrested for protesting the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, Thursday afternoon. Hannah, who starred in movies such as Splash, Kill Bill, and Steel Magnolias, and Eleanor Fairchild, were each charged with criminal trespassing and other charges. [10] Actress Daryl Hannah and an East Texas landowner bonded out of the Wood County Jail early this morning after being arrested while protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline. Daryl Hannah and landowner Eleanor Fairchild say they were just peacefully protesting, even though Fairchild admits to trespassing. [11] Seventy-eight-year-old great-grandmother Eleanor Fairchild did not know of Hollywood actress Daryl Hannahbefore the two were jailed in Wood County, Texas together Thursday for protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline construction in Fairchild’s backyard. “I just met her, I didn’t even know her from Adam. I didn’t know her movies,” Fairchild said of her cellmate. [12]
Daryl Hannah, 51, and Eleanor Fairchild, 78, were arrested on charges of criminal trespass and booked into the Wood County Jail, the sixth and seventh people to be arrested in recent Wood County protests aimed at stopping TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion Keystone XL pipeline. [13] Hannah, 51, was arrested on charges of resisting arrest and trespassing, as informed by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Hannah had stood in front and tried to prevent an excavator from uprooting trees for building the Keystone XL pipeline, a project of TransCanada Corp. She was joined by the owner of the property whose trees were being uprooted – 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild, powerless to protect her property from being ravaged by oil companies backed by big interests. TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline is set to transfer crude oil from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast. Hannah and landowner Eleanor Fairchild were arrested in northeast Texas after the two stood near heavy equipment to try to halt its construction on the 78-year-old woman’s farm in Winnsboro, Hannah’s manager told the Associated Press. Both women were jailed and charged for criminal trespassing and released hours later after posting bail, according to police records obtained by OTRC.com. [15]The Splash star, a longtime environmental campaigner, was taken into custody alongside 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild on Thursday night (04Oct12) after taking part in a demonstration against TransCanada’s controversial Keystone XL pipeline, which is being built to transfer crude oil from Canada to refineries on America’s Gulf Coast. The women were booked on suspicion of criminal trespassing after they stood in front of construction equipment on Fairchild’s farm in the town of Winnsboro, near Dallas and they were released from Wood County Jail in Quitman late on Thursday. [27] Hollywood actor Daryl Hannah was arrested yesterday near the same place as a Louisville man a couple of weeks ago, protesting construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, according to news reports. [28] Daryl Hannah was released Thursday night from the Wood County Jail in Winnsboro after being arrested Wednesday for protesting the Keystone XL Pipeline. [25] The two women were protesting against TransCanada’s proposed oil pipeline in Winnsboro, around 100 miles east of Dallas, and were arrested for reportedly standing in front of heavy drilling machinery on Fairchild’s farm in an attempt to bring work to a halt. “They’ve arrested Daryl. and a rural Texas great-grandmother,” The AP quotes Bassis as saying. Quipping that “the streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets”, Bassis added that he had spoken to Hannah, who had indicated it was likely that the two women would be held at Wood County Jail overnight. [29] Hannah said: “I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of TransCanada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and badgering. We sort of stood in front of them and held our hands up in a stop motion.” Her publicist Paul Bassis said: “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother.” A spokesman for TransCanada said protesters had been “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk”. He added: “It is unfortunate Ms Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” [30] In August 2011, Hannah was arrested in Washington, D.C. after protesting the same pipeline. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, told reporters. In January, President Obama denied the pipeline a permit after congressional Republicans had given him a 60-day deadline to act. Obama, however, permitted the pipeline to reroute its path through less environmentally endangered areas, including through Fairchild’s property. “The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets,” Bassis said. [18] The Kill Bill actress was also arrested, among several hundred activists and scientists, in August of 2011 while protesting the pipeline in Washington. She has reportedly long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline. David Dodson, a spokesperson for TransCanada, has stated, “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.”[31] The AP reports that the two women stood in front of construction equipment in an attempt to hinder workers from building the Keystone XL pipeline designed to transport crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada, said in an email to the AP. He went on to warn that the protesters were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [32] Obama denied the permit in January, citing time restraints. He did approve an expedited permit for TransCanada to begin construction of a portion of the pipeline from Cushing, OK to the Gulf. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property. It is also unfortunate that she and other professional activists have chosen to engage in illegal acts, putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk, along with trying to prevent thousands of Americans from providing for their families by helping to build the Gulf Coast Project and the energy security it will provide.” [33]
Hannah is a staunch opponent of the pipeline, which is planned to run from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and was arrested at the White House last August following a sit-in against the development. TransCanada spokesman David Dodson said: “It is unfortunate Ms Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” He also argued that protesters were endangering the safety of both themselves and others. [29] Fraught with controversy, the pipeline is also a factor in the upcoming Presidential election. TransCanada called Hannah’s arrest, which she said resulted in an injured wrist, “unfortunate” but did not express regret. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” corporate spokesperson David Dodson told the Associated Press, adding that protesters were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [1]The actress and the landowner were taken to Wood County Jail on suspicion of criminal trespassing. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, TransCanada’s representative, told The Associated Press. He said the protesters were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [34] The actress was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest, paying a $1,000 and a $3,000 bond, respectively. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada Corp., told the AP, adding they were “putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk.” [35] The issue has even been debated by President Barak Obama. Speaking of Daryl’s arrest, TransCanada spokesman David Dodson said: ”It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property.” He added protesters were ”putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk”.[2]
Police were called to the scene after Hannah and 78-year-old property owner, Eleanor Fairchild, stood on equipment at the Winnsboro farm to halt attempts to build the line. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” David Dodson, a spokesman for TransCanada said in statement to the Associated Press. [36]
Hannah, a longtime opponent to the proposed $7 billion pipeline, was arrested alongside 78-year-old landowner Eleanor Fairchild in Winnsboro, Texas, for criminal trespassing at a construction site. TransCanada wants to bury its pipeline under Fairchild’s property. [23] Daryl, 51, was standing with Eleanor Fairchild in front of heavy machinery in attempt to halt construction of the pipeline on Eleanor’s farm. The women were arrested for criminal trespassing and were taken to the Wood County Jail, where they were expected to be held overnight. It’s not the first time the actress has spoken out against the construction of the $7 billion TransCanada pipeline. [37] Taken into custody by Wood County Sherriff’s deputies alongside Hannah was a 78-year-old local landowner who joined in the protest of the pipeline designed to transport crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. According to Perez Hilton, Daryl Hannah’s manager Paul Bassis confirms reports, stating, “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother.” Bassis added that he had spoken to the actress Thursday evening and that there was “a strong indication” that both she and Eleanor Fairchild would be kept in lock-up overnight. [31]HOUSTON — Actress Daryl Hannah of “Splash” fame was arrested in northeast Texas on Thursday, along with a 78-year-old landowner as the pair protested an oil pipeline designed to bring crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother,” said Paul Bassis, Hannah’s manager. [38]
The pipeline is deigned to bring crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Daryl’s agent, Paul Bassis, said the protesters were likely to be kept in jail last night (04.10.12), adding: ”They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother. ”The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets.” [2] Big screen film star and environmental activist Daryl Hannah made quite the splash when she was arrested on a farm in Winnsboro, Texas yesterday for protesting the creation of an oil pipeline which would bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada to the Gulf Coast. [39]
Hannah — who has starred in dozens of movies, including “Kill Bill” and “Splash” — also was arrested in August 2011 while protesting the pipeline in Washington. She was one of several hundred prominent scientists and activists arrested that month. They argue the pipeline would be unsafe because it would be carrying heavy, acidic crude oil that could more easily corrode a metal pipe, which would lead to a spill. They also say refining the oil would further contaminate the air in a region that has long struggled with pollution. TransCanada says its pipeline would be the safest ever built, and that the crude is no dirtier than oil currently arriving from Venezuela or parts of California. The issue became politically charged when congressional Republicans gave President Barack Obama 60 days to decide whether TransCanada should be granted the necessary permit for the pipeline to cross an international border before snaking its way 1,700 miles south to the Texas coast. Obama, saying his administration did not have enough time to study the potential environmental impacts, denied the permit in January. He encouraged TransCanada to reroute the northern portion of the pipeline to avoid an environmentally sensitive area of Nebraska. He also promised to expedite permitting of a southern portion of the pipeline from Cushing, Okla., to the Gulf Coast to relieve a bottleneck at the Cushing refinery. TransCanada began construction of that portion of the pipeline this summer after receiving the necessary permits. [17] In September, five protesters arrested in Franklin County spent 48 hours in jail after attaching themselves to machinery. In addition to environmental concerns, protests have been raised over what opponents say is TransCanada’s abuse of eminent domain using its status as a so-called common carrier. It is a false premise to say it will bring energy independence.” [13]
The two had stood before heavy construction equipment on Fairchild’s land in Winnsboro, in the East of the Lone Star State, where TransCanada is constructing part of a $7 billion pipeline to bring the Alberta tar sands’ non-conventional oil to the US’ Gulf Coast. Hannah and Fairchild both told The Vancouver Observer they did not expect to get arrested. Hannah was staying at Fairchild’s 90-acre farm as part of her ongoing advocacy against the pipeline and a forthcoming documentary about the individual U.S. landowners the pipeline’s construction has affected. Actress Daryl Hannah and property owner Eleanor Fairchild on efforts to block construction of the Keystone Pipeline because of its impact on landowner. [43]Hannah, who is also facing a charge of resisting arrest, has now spoken out about the drama, insisting the pair had done nothing wrong. She tells local news channel KLTV, “I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of TransCanada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain.” The actress has accused a burly guard allegedly working for the oil company of hurting her for no reason: “We just sort of stood in front of them (police) and held our hands in a stop motion. I’m holding my wrist because there was this private security guard. and he injured my wrist.” It’s Hannah’s second arrest fighting the pipeline – she was taken into custody in August, 2011, after protesting outside the White House in Washington, D.C. [16] ”I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of Trans Canada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. I’m holding my wrist because there was this private security guard hired by TransCanada and he injured my wrist.” Fairchild said she objects specifically to the project’s proposed usage of oil extracted from Tar Sands, which is a type of petroleum deposit made out of loose sand. She added: “I’m concerned about our water supply and I’m concerned about the pipe itself. Fairchild also told KLTV that she did not throw herself in front of the excavator, as sheriff’s office officials had told reporters, adding: “I had no intention of killing myself.” [15]

Fairchild owns land in Winnsboro that the pipeline will cross. Reports Thursday evening indicated that both women would be jailed overnight. The Keystone XL, owned by TransCanada (NYSE: TRP ), has been a focus of controversy for the last several years with both protests and congressional actions focusing on the pipeline that will bring oil from Canada to refineries in Texas. It’s the second time that the actress, star of such movies as Splash and Clan of the Cave Bear, has been arrested while protesting the pipeline. In August 2011, she was arrested in Washington State along with several hundred other people. [46] The Splash actress was taken into custody in Winnsboro, Texas, on Thursday after demonstrating against the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, used to bring crude oil from Canada to America’s Gulf Coast. [37] The Elle Driver of “ Kill Bill ” movie series was detained after doing a protest against TransCanada’s construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to transfer crude oil from Canada to the Gulf Coast for fear of air pollution. [34] The Keystone XL pipeline, a project of TransCanada Corp, would ship more than half a million barrels a day of oil sands-derived crude to the Texas Gulf Coast from Canada. [22]
The specific pipeline in question is the Keystone XL pipeline, which stretches from the Texas Gulf Coast to Canada. [47]
Hannah and 78-year-old Fairchild had positioned themselves in front of necessary equipment in an attempt to stop construction of the Keystone XL pipeline on Fairchild’s Winnsboro, TX, property. [31] On Thursday afternoon, Hannah marched across Fairchild Farms with the ranch owner to block bulldozers from continuing to clear large swaths of Mrs. Fairchild’s land along the toxic tar sands pipeline’s route. Keystone XL will permanently bisect Mrs. Fairchild’s 300 acre ranch, which includes undeveloped wetland areas and natural springs producing over 400 gallons of fresh water per minute from her property. Hannah, whose outspoken anti-Tar Sands position dates back many years, expressed pride to be able to stand with Mrs. Fairchild who is watching her home and its delicate ecosystems be destroyed in front of her eyes. [9]
Hannah’s manager Paul Bassis said there was “a strong indication” that Hannah and Eleanor would stay overnight in jail. “The streets of Winnsboro will be much safer tonight now that they’ve gotten that 78-year-old great grandmother off the streets,” he said in sarcasm. Last year, Hannah was taken into custody after voicing her opposition to the building of the Keystone XL pipeline in front of the White House.[34] A press conference is expected to be arranged sometime soon. KETK spoke with Eleanor Fairchild back in 2010 regarding the Keystone Pipeline, when she said “I really wish it wouldn’t come across here. but if it does come across here it should be built in a way that’s as safe as possible.” Bassis tells KETK, Hannah has “always been sympathetic to Texas landowners who oppose the government taking their land for pipeline pathways.” She was arrested back in August of 2011 in front of the White House in protest to the same pipeline. Hannah’s publicist claims Fox News’ Sean Hannity will bail her out of jail, after a promise to do so the last time she was a guest on his show. Bassis says he has been in contact with Hannity, and that they are expecting that he will follow through with his commitment. She is best know for her roles in Splash, Blade Runner, Roxanne, Wall Street, Steel Magnolias and Kill Bill.[25] Hannah, 51, and the site’s property owner, Eleanor Fairchild, were arrested after standing in front of an excavator that was clearing trees and brush to make way for the pipeline’s construction. [20] Hannah, 51, was being held in the Wood County Jail, according to jail records. She and landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, were taken into custody at a property near the intersection of Highway 154 and FM 2869 after standing in front of an excavator and other construction equipment. [24]According to the arrest sheet obtained by ET, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, was arrested for criminal trespass and obstructing passageway, while Hannah was arrested for criminal trespass and resisting arrest. The actress’ manager, Paul Bassis, reportedly told The Associated Press that there was “a strong indication” that they would be held at Wood County Jail overnight. [32] The landowner, Eleanor Fairchild, was also charged with criminal trespass and obstructing a passageway. She bonded out of jail late Thursday. Hannah is charged with criminal trespass for blocking an excavator by blocking its path. Earlier that afternoon, Wood County deputies asked the two to leave, and they refused. They were then arrested, and are currently held in the Wood County Justice Center. [48]
Last August, Hannah was arrested at a pipeline protest outside the White House. In 2010, Fairchild, the Wood County property owner voiced her concerns on the pipeline that had yet to start work in Texas. [48] A news release from the Tar Sands Blockade said Hannah was arrested after walking with a group including Fairchild in front of TransCanada machinery. It is not Hannah’s first arrest in connection with pipeline protests. She was arrested last year at the White House during a protest organized by a group called Tar Sands Action. That day, she joined about 100 other protestors to sit on the sidewalk outside the White House. [24]
Hannah and Fairchild were protesting near Texas 154 and FM 2869 and had been standing in front of construction equipment. To provide access for TransCanada’s pipeline, they have condemned several acres of Fairchild’s farm and she as well as other landowners are angry that their land can be taken away from them. [33] The women were taken into custody about 4 p.m. at property near Texas 154 and FM 2869. They had been standing in front of an excavator and other construction equipment, according to a statement issued by Tar Sands Blockade, a group supporting protests of the project. Several acres of Fairchild’s farm have been condemned through eminent domain to provide access for TransCanada’s pipeline to cross her property. Like other Northeast Texas landowners, she has opposed the process used to take her land and raised environmental concerns about the project.[13]
Hannah stood in front of an excavator being used to clear trees and brush in order to build the pipeline, Bassis said. Joining her was the site’s property owner, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, whose land was taken by eminent domain for the project, he said. [22]Bassis tells KETK, Hannah and a woman, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, were taken into custody at a property near the intersection of Hwy. 154 and FM 2869 after standing in front of an excavator and other construction equipment. [25]
The actress was arrested on Thursday for standing in front of the earth-moving machines that were about to take the trees down in order to make room for excavations. Hannah was not the only one who was protesting at that time; she was accompanied by the site’s owner, Eleanor Fairchild, 78. [27] Hannah, 51, was arrested with landowner Eleanor Fairchild, 78, who was jailed on charges of criminal trespass and obstructing a highway passage. [42]

[12] Daryl Hannah latest to be arrested at Keystone XL pipeline construction site. [28] For the second time in less than 16 months, Daryl Hannah has been arrested protesting the Keystone XL pipeline. [45] Daryl Hannah has been protesting against the Keystone XL pipeline ever since the project was initially announced. [27]
What landed Hannah behind bars in the first place? Hannah was supposedly protesting the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, CBS News reports. [5]The pair are not the first to be booked into the Wood County Jail for protesting the pipeline; five others were previously arrested for attempting to stop TransCanada’s construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. [33] Daryl, who has starred in dozens of movies including Kill Bill and Splash, was also arrested in August 2011 while protesting against the Keystone XL pipeline in Washington. [41] The Kill Bill actress was one of several activists arrested in August 2011 for protesting in Washington. Construction of the Keystone XL began this summer. [37]
According to sources, Hannah is an active environmentalist who has been involved with several other feats of activism. It was during her 2006 protest of a South Central Farm that she chained herself to a tree for three weeks to a walnut tree. She was also arrested on August 30, 2011 in front of the White House for participating in a sit-in opposing the Keystone XL pipeline. [19] Daryl Hannah made many other protests against the pipeline. She was, in fact arrested last year because she protested against the pipeline project in front of the White House. [27]
Daryl Hannah was arrested (again) Thursday, this time in Texas for protesting the creation of an oil pipeline. [4] Everyone’s favorite mermaid, Daryl Hannah, was arrested in northeast Texas Thursday after she and a friend were protesting a pipeline that traveled from Canada to the Gulf. Daryl Hannah was recently arrested for protesting a planned $7 billion oil pipeline, more than 13 months after she was detained for the same reason. [15] Daryl Hannah was in arrested in 2011 for protesting another pipeline construction in Washington.[39]
HOUSTON (AP) – Actress Daryl Hannah of “Splash” fame has been jailed in northeast Texas during a protest against an oil pipeline designed to bring crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. [49] Updated: 7:57 am, Fri Oct 5, 2012. WINNSBORO — A Hollywood actress and Northeast Texas landowner were arrested Thursday afternoon as they protested construction of a pipeline that will carry Canadian crude oil through the region. [13] Thursday’s protest was one piece of continuing civil disobedience in response to construction of the pipeline designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries. Wansley said his office made five earlier arrests in connection with protests. [13] The pipeline is designed to bring crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to refineries along the Texas coast. Daryl has argued its construction could lead to a life-threatening oil spill or air contamination. [37]

” Oil and tar sands are two different things — They don’t take all that sand out of it before they send it through that pipeline,” she added, explaining, “I’m a farmer – it takes equipment only a little time to wear holes when dealing with sand.” Fairchild noted that her husband worked in the oil industry for 50 years, and was senior vice president of a Texas oil company. Hannah agreed with Fairchild, saying that the great-grandmother of five “doesn’t want that toxic, corrosive substance going through her property.” [12] The two women were reportedly arrested for blocking heavy equipment that was to be used to help construct the pipeline as it attempted to pass through Fairchild’s Texas farm. Hannah reached star status in the 80′s film Splash in which she starred alongside Tom Hanks. She has starred in dozens of movies including; Grumpy Old Men, Kill Bill, Steel Magnolias and The Pope of Greenwich Village. Her latest movie endeavor is the 2012 movie Eldorado. [19] Hannah, of Splash and Kill Bill fame, has been a prominent activist for some time, having been arrested in August 2011 during a protest of a pipeline in Washington. [32] Hannah has been a longtime environmental activist. In August 2011, she was arrested for protesting the same pipeline project in Washington, DC, reports The Associated Press. She joined hundreds of other activists and scientists who opposed the project. [21] Hannah is a well-known environmental activist and was also arrested last year for protesting against the pipeline outside the White House. [14] In August 2011, Hannah and others were arrested in D.C. after holding a sit-in protest outside the White House in opposition to the oil pipeline’s expansion. [8] Hannah was last arrested in August 2011 after a sit-down protest of the Keystone in front of the White House. “We cannot risk these precious resources and we cannot shackle ourselves to this type of destructive energy future when we have solutions available to us,” Hannah earlier told ABC News. [45] Hannah was last arrested in late August 2011 after a sit-in protest of the Keystone in front of the White House. [44]

Hannah was also arrested in August 2011 while protesting a pipeline in Washington. [35] We heard the machines beeping and saw black smoke billowing, and we said enough. It was a sudden moment of inspiration and frustration,” Hannah said, hours after the two were released with criminal charges including trespassing. “It’s most ridiculous that she was arrested for trespassing on her own land. That would piss off most Texans,” Hannah added, laughing. Fairchild may not have planned to land herself in jail, but she calls this a success in her drive to draw attention to the pipeline since the “media doesn’t cover it like they should.”[12] Hannah’s rep Paul Bassis released a statement following the arrest explaining that Fairchild actually owned the property on which the pipeline is slated for construction. He adds that it was purchased from her with knowledge or consent using eminent domain. [47] We acquire an easement – similar to a water, sewer or utility line that runs through most of our properties. The pipeline, like utilities we rely on, is buried but ownership of the property never changes hands and the landowner maintains the economic rights to the surface,” he added. Hannah and Fairchild maintain that Fairchild still pays taxes on the easement between her land and the pipeline construction, and that it is unfair that she has been blocked from entering or planting around it. [12]
Hannah has made protesting the construction of the XLl Pipeline a personal project. She says Fairchild’s land is just one of the stops she has made along the route of the pipeline. “I was really interested to meet a lot of the farmers, ranchers and landowners who are fighting this battle. [10] Said Hannah to KLTV about Thursday’s arrest: “I was peacefully protesting the unwanted advances of Trans Canada on Eleanor Fairchild’s land. She has stated very clearly that she doesn’t want them there and they insist on bullying her and taking away her land through eminent domain.” Check out more of this week’s Pop culture news, including an American Idol judge feud, Mitt Romney mentioning Big Bird during the first presidential debate and more at Bravetta’s blog tulsaworld.com/pop. [8] Hannah, 51, was in Winnsboro, Texas, on Oct. 4 to offer support for landowner Eleanor Fairchild, whose property was seized by eminent domain for the project. [45] Mr Bassis said Daryl and Texas landowner Eleanor Fairchild were standing in front of heavy equipment brought on to the woman’s property in Winnsboro. He said the two women were being taken to the Wood County Jail. [41] Hannah and 78-year-old Eleanor Fairchild, whose Winnsboro farm fell along the construction route, stood in front of the company’s heavy equipment in an attempt to stop the $7 billion project. [34]
According to People, the 51-year-old actress and her 78-year-old cohort Eleanor Fairchild, who’s also the landowner of part of that scheduled pipeline site, ” stood on equipment on Fairchild’s Winnsboro farm to halt attempts at building the Keystone XL pipeline.” [39] Actress is taken into custody along with landowner Eleanor Fairchild after they stood in the way of heavy equipment being used to build the southern portion of the Keystone XL pipeline. [45]

Keystone XL, Enbridge, Shell and Kinder Morgan: like ex-boyfriends who wont take the hint. David Suzuki calls on people to risk arrest this August in order to halt construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Albertas tar sands to Texas refineries. [12] TransCanada, the company in charge of installing the Keystone XL pipeline, reassured inhabitants in the region that the construction will be “safe and reliable”. [27] The Kill Bill star went to jail with a 78-year-old great-grandmother for ‘trespassing’ in protest against Keystone XL Pipeline construction. [12] Keystone XL update: U.S. President Barack Obama welcomed the company’s plan to start construction for part of the pipeline, despite the fact that the rest of the route has yet to be approved. [12]
The Keystone XL pipeline has long been a controversial issue ever since it was announced. [23] Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said on Friday that delaying approval for the Keystone XL pipeline could end the project entirely. “I’m not sure this project would survive that kind of delay,” Flaherty. [12]

The actress and activist, who has already travelled to many spots along the pipeline route, was arrested for criminal trespass and obstructing a passageway. She was later released from Wood County jail in Texas at midnight after posting a bond of $4,500 (£2,800). [30] This booking photo provided by the Wood County Sheriff shows actress Daryl Hannah after her arrest in Winnsboro, Texas, Thursday. [8] Daryl Hannah, as photographed by the Wood County, Texas, sheriff’s office after her arrest. [22]
“We went in, sneaked in, and went on the easement, and stopped the workers,” explained Fairchild. Wood County authorities say TransCanada rightfully owns the land they are working on through an easement. Photos given to us by Hannah’s publicist show the two women holding up their hands while standing in front of TransCanada equipment. The Wood County Sheriff’s office gave protestors a warning, and when the protestors didn’t leave, they were forced to arrest both women. Wood County Sheriff Bill Wansley tells us,”The Sheriff’s Department will continue doing their job and treat everyone the same. [11] Back in 2010, Fairchild protested the pipeline project. Fairchild has owned her family farm for more than 20 years. Wood county sheriff’s officials told us off camera yesterday that both Hannah and Fairchild started their protest by laying down in front of an excavator. [10]
Bonds had not set by 6 p.m., and officials with the Wood County sheriff’s office said no one would be available to speak about developments in the pipeline protests until Friday morning. Hannah is best known for her roles in “Splash,” “Blade Runner,” “Roxanne,” “Wall Street,” “Steel Magnolias” and “Kill Bill.” [24] Hannah was charged with criminal trespassing and Resisting Arrest by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Her bond was set at $4,500 dollars. [19] The famed 51-year-old Splash star was arrested on Thursday for criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, a Wood County Texas Jail official tells Hollywood.com. While she did have to spend some time behind bars, Hannah bonded out around midnight. [5]
A 78-year-old woman was also arrested with the star. “They’ve arrested Daryl Hannah and a rural Texas great-grandmother,” Daryl’s manager Paul Bassis told The Associated Press. [37] Hannah’s manager says the actress and “a rural Texas great-grandmother” were arrested about 100 miles east of Dallas in the town of Winnsboro. [49]
The 51-year-old actress was arrested, again, on Thursday evening (October 4) in Texas. This time, the “Kill Bill” star faced trouble from the law for protesting against the creation of an oil pipeline. [36] The Kill Bill star- unlike most actors or actresses who get arrested for the usual BS, say, DUIs or shoplifting- was arrested in Texasfor protesting the creation of an oil pipeline. [7]
The southern section of the pipeline — the project Hannah was protesting — will take oil from the glutted Cushing, Okla., storage hub to refineries in Texas. President Barack Obama lent his support to the project, which is being built. The northern section of the $7.6 billion project, which would take crude across the Canadian border into the United States, was rejected by Obama last year on environmental and water supply grounds about its route through Nebraska. [22]
” It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of -state activists have chosen to break the law and tie up scarce law enforcement resources to deal with these matters. TransCanada, like American companies operating in Canada, has the legal authority to build this pipeline under Texas state law,” said TransCanada’s Howard.[12] Yesterday afternoon TransCanada released the following statement. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out of state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property. It is also unfortunate that she and other professional activists have chosen to engage in illegal acts, putting their own safety and the safety of others at risk, along with trying to prevent thousands of Americans from providing for their families by helping to build the gulf coast project and the energy security it will provide.” [11] A spokesman for TransCanada refutes the claims. “It is unfortunate Ms. Hannah and other out-of-state activists have chosen to break the law by illegally trespassing on private property,” company spokesman David Dodson said. [37]

Hannah has long opposed TransCanada’s construction of the $7 billion pipeline. [49] Hannah pointed out that although U.S. President Barack Obama denied TransCanada the permit for the pipeline to cross the US-Canada border in January, connections between Washington and TransCanada are enabling the continued construction of the disputed crude link. The Obama administration’s Secretary of State “Hillary Clinton’s deputy campaign director when she was running for president is now TransCanada’s chief lobbyist. They were obviously able to strike a very cozy deal,” Hannah said, referring to Paul Elliot, now TransCanada’s director of government relations. Hannah said that despite her arrest, she won’t back down. [12]
Crews with Michels Pipeline Construction work on clearing land Thursday in Wood County for TransCanada’s oil pipeline. [13] Houstonian Alejandro de la Torre chained himself to the ground at a pipeline construction site in Wood County, Texas. “He was basically holding on to a large ball of concrete in the ground,” said Ron Seifert, spokesperson for Tar Sands Blockade. [50] A spokesperson with the Tar Sands Blockade says the group, including Hannah, ran in front of construction equipment, and were detained by Wood County Deputies. [51] Wood County authorities said the Hannah and a landowner ran in front of construction equipment, and were detained by deputies. [48]
Hannah is a longtime environmental activist and is best known for her acting roles in “Splash” and “Blade Runner.” She’s accused of blocking construction equipment near the Tyler/Longview area by laying in front of it. She has been charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest. [52] Hannah was arrested with a landowner, Eleanor Fairchild, who was charged with criminal trespass and obstructing a passageway.[25] Hannah, 51, who starred in films including Splash, Blade Runner and Steel Magnolias, was held alongside Eleanor Fairchild, 78, a local landowner. [30] The owner of the property, Eleanor Fairchild, 78, also protested, Bassis added. [21]
Bassis told the media that Daryl and Eleanor stood in front of the excavator to prevent it from taking the trees down. Ms. Fairchild agreed to take part in the protest because her land was taken by eminent domain for the project to be enacted. The 78-year-old woman claims her property was abused by TransCanada; therefore, she requested authorities to remove the excavators from her territory.[27] Earlier Thursday, about six miles north of where Hannah and Fairchild were taken into custody, several other protesters continued a crusade that began Oct. 1, sitting in trees on a TransCanada easement across property owned by David Daniel on FM 2088. [13]
Several acres of Fairchild’s farm have been condemned by pipeline builder TransCanada. She has said she opposes TransCanada’s plan to transport heavy tar-sands crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. [24] The president allowed the southern section of the TransCanada project, which is meant to carry oil from Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub to oil refineries in Texas. The pipeline, which is supposed to ship more than half a million barrels of oil sands-derived crude from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast, when both sections of the project are completed, was described as “safe and reliable” by a representative of TransCanada. [14] The pipeline, which is being built by TransCanada Corp, will be used to transport more than half a million barrels of oil sands-derived crude a day from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast. [20]
The pipeline will transport crude oil from Canada’s tar sands to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast. [23]
The $7 billion project, designed to transport heavy tar-sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada, to Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries, is currently under construction in Texas.[45] TransCanada Corp.’ s project would ship over half a billion barrels of oil from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast. [21]
Several acres of Fairchild’s farm have been condemned by TransCanada. She said she opposes TransCanada’s plan to transport heavy tar-sands crude from Canada to the Gulf Coast. [41]
Is it — in — all Americans are water supply our food supply. It’s an export pipeline only in the greater good is only for the pockets of trans Canada — has nothing to do with our benefit. Wonder why these professional activists who engage in these illegal activities. Are trying to prevent thousands of Americans from providing for their families by helping to build the Gulf Coast project and energy security that it provides. You know the the ecological concerns while somewhat valid we haven’t heard of a whole bunch of people dying from these pipelines or poisoning our wells are poisoning our land. Why why that that you’re still — in this position they’re taking this position. [43]
Daryl has previously been arrested for protesting against the pipeline in Washington D.C. in 2011. She and other activists believe it will carry heavy, acidic crude oil that could corrode a metal pipeline and lead to a spill. They also claim that by not refining the oil, it would further contaminate the air in a region that struggles with pollution.[2] Daryl was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest and paid $4,000 in collective bond. She was arrested back in August for protesting a similar pipeline expansion in Washington D.C. [36]
Hannah was charged with criminal trespass and resisting arrest, paying a $1,000 and a $3,000 bond, respectively. She was released around midnight. [7] In order to be released, Hannah had to pay a $1,500 bond on the criminal trespass charge and $3,000 for resisting arrest. [5]
The spokeswoman confirmed the news that Daryl Hannah was retained on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest. [27] Booking information from the Sheriff’s Office said Hannah was held on charges of trespassing and resisting arrest. [22]
The protesters remained perched in the trees late Thursday. Before Hannah’s arrest, Wood County Sheriff Billy Wansley voiced his impatience with protests by what he termed “outside environmental activists.” He said the sheriff’s office was working to protect the rights of TransCanada, landowners and protesters. [13] I’m concerned about our water supply and I’m concerned about the pipe itself,” said Wood County resident, Eleanor Fairchild. [10]
While environmentalists scored a victory last year with the Obama Administration’s decision to re-route the pipeline away from an environmentally-sensitive area of Nebraska, construction of the $7B is already underway on the southern portion. Fairchild, 78, had her land taken by eminent domain for this portion of the pipeline.[44] TransCanada, which is behind the construction of the reported $7 billion pipeline, has said that the pipeline would be “the safest ever built.” [32]Congressional Republicans gave President Barack Obama 60 days to decide whether TransCanada should be approved for a permit so the pipeline could cross the Canadian border and snake down to the Texas coast. [33] TransCanada has said that it will be one of the safest pipelines ever built, but critics argue that spills can still happen because the crude oil can still corrode a metal pipe. The pipeline also became a hot-button political issue earlier this year when President Obama denied the company a permit to build the pipeline. [21] Protesters argue the pipeline would be unsafe because it would be carrying heavy, acidic crude oil that could more easily corrode a metal pipe, which would lead to a spill. TransCanada says its pipeline would be the safest ever built, and that the crude is no dirtier than oil currently arriving from Venezuela or parts of California. [30]
According to the news source, the protesters have taken the stance that the creation of the pipeline could lead to a spill, claiming that it would carry “heavy, acidic crude oil that could more easily corrode a metal pipe.” [32]
North Dakota where the unemployment rate — the lowest in the country. You know do you — these things there’ll assay. For the greater good of the nation where people can actually — their kids we should do this. If you you’re mistaken on the hundreds of thousands of jobs it’s three. Thousand temporary construction jobs and that’s it because the only reason they want this pipeline is to make. It — the coast so that they can export the oil this has nothing to do with energy security it has nothing to do with jobs. [43] Gold pipeline protests that led to — actors there’ll — and Texas land owner — their child trying to stop the pipelines construction. Both planning themselves behind bars. [43] Obama has supported the southern part of the pipeline, which takes oil from Oklahoma to Texas. [21] The Southern part of the pipeline will transport oil from Cushing, Oklahoma to refineries in Texas. [27]

The protest took place outside Winnsboro, Texas, about 80 miles east of Dallas, said Hannah’s agent, Paul Bassis. [22] The information was provided by Hannah’s agent, Paul Bassis, who added that the protest took place at Winnsboro, Texas, about 80 miles east of Dallas, the Associated Press reports. [27]
Hannah was arrested Thursday in the East Texas town of Winnsboro after staging a small protest with a landowner there. [26]
Hannah is no stranger to the back of police cars. Besides her arrest Thursday and in 2011, Hannah was arrested with 30 others in June 2009 after blocking traffic on a major highway in West Virginia to protest mountaintop coal mining. She was also arrested in 2006 while protesting the bulldozing of an urban farm in Los Angeles.[18]
” said Hannah. Hannah says she has spoken to people all along the pipeline. She hopes her arrest will bring awareness to certain issues that surround the pipeline. “Maybe it will awaken the conversation so that people can really get a full understanding of the dangers are of what the Tar Sands really is because it’s a very different thing than a regular pipeline,” said Hannah. We are told that Hannah’s publicist will be holding a press conference later this morning. [10] Thursday’s arrest was not Hannah’s first in connection with protests of the pipeline. She was jailed in 2011 in Washington D.C., after a protest organized by a group called Tar Sands Action. That day, she joined about 100 other protesters to sit on the sidewalk outside the White House. [13] Hannah was also jailed last year in Washington D.C. for protesting with 100 others outside the White House. [33]

In an exclusive interview with the Vancouver Observer, Kill Bill actor Daryl Hannah said that despite her arrest, she wont back down. [12]Hannah, who was charged with criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, paid a $1,000 and $3,000 bond, respectively, before being released around midnight, PEOPLE reports. [8] Hannah faces charges of criminal trespass for standing in front of some heavy equipment and refusing to move. [46]

“The pipeline is coming a mile through my land. I started finding out what tar sands are, and I don’t think they should be in the United States,” Fairchild said.[12] Author and activist Bill McKibben along with NASA climate scientist Jim Hansenhave called the pipeline and further tar sands development “game over” for the climate. [28]
The 2,154 mile Keystone pipeline is proposed to extend from Alberta, Canada through several U.S. states, all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. [19]
