Recording Academy – Advocacy

Would you sign a petition to get paid less money?

While the question seems absurd, you may be (or have already been) asked to do this by Pandora radio, which is seeking to lower its payments to those who create the music that drive its business. Pandora’s “letter of support” is being circulated as they prepare to embark on another legislative effort to reduce royalties to featured artists, session musicians and producers.

Just two months ago, Pandora’s CFO stated, “The rates that we pay are statutory rates that are fixed, they are set in stone through 2015. Based on those rates, we are confident we can build a really good company…It’s all about monetization.”

We agree. So why is Pandora telling Congress it needs to lower its payments (already a tenth of a penny per play) to artists?

In a letter sent to artists, Pandora says it wants to speak for “working musicians” in Washington. But they know you already have a voice in Washington. Just a few weeks ago, hundreds of Academy members made their voices heard loud and clear at GRAMMYs on the Hill, telling Congress to protect fair wages to creators. With all due respect to Pandora, we do not need Wall St. media companies speaking for music creators.

This was about the time last year when Planned Parenthood and susan komen had their thing start up fiercely and it was about the time I realized that I was in my own so called bubble…I just did not know people cared about abortion today and woman’s rights if you will…which tend to all be about birth control, etc…I did not know they were issues today…so to speak….and then we had an entire primary and an election based with that as the focal points…it was wild to me and so I guess i need to be heard…this thing here, the sustainable action network growing huge in the last year, and then Ram Phan will be out sooner than later this year….its been cool…

For the past few months, we have been vigorously opposing a bill misleadingly named the “Internet Radio Fairness Act.” This bill would dramatically cut the royalties that Internet radio services like Pandora pay to music creators, while doing nothing to close the loophole that allows AM/FM radio to pay nothing at all.

Creators should receive fair compensation for their work, and we will take that message directly to the Congressional Committee that oversees intellectual property. Jimmy Jam, Chair Emeritus of The Academy’s Board of Trustees, will be the only music creator testifying.

Triple Sin Productions show to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Tropical Recording Artist, Cryout, Headlines the Concert!

On October 6th, Triple Sin Productions will feature a live show of eclectic world music with every top local music artists including:

Faith Lugalia, Jordan Dee Minnis, Phoenix, Beneath the Burning Sun, Linnaberry Wine, The Calm, The Gabriel Project, Morgan Wilk & MP3, Nick McEwen & The 33, Dirty Empire, The New Imperialism, Cryout and fun activities all day with karaoke for all ages, games, food, and so much more!

Every act seen on the stage at the Spirits Pub next week, will not only be giving their time to perform at the event, they have not also not only also donated toys, special boxed sets, collectibles and many more cool items, 100% of proceeds will be donated to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital! The second annual benefit showfor the the St. Jude Children’s Hospital is being held next Saturday, October 6that Spirits Pub (231 E Main S Valley Center, Ks). The cover charge is $5 for adults, and $3 for kids which all go to the (St. Judes) Children’s Hospital. The day of events and live music will begin in the afternoon at 1pm that Saturday, and will be all ages until 9pm that evening. It is then 21+ to enter from 9pm-2am. Sunset Vending, Sunset Home Visual Entertainment (SHE), Sunset Strategic Marketing (SSM) donated the catalog of boxed sets, Home Video Titles and Recorded Music along with the live performance by Tropical’s Cryout.
The theme for this year’s benefit event is kids; a collaborative effort of many local music artists, local businesses, local music industry people, and entertainment companies, October 6th, is going to be a day filled with music and a lot of fun activities for all ages, while bringing together music industry professionals, music artists and their fans, to raise money and awareness for the premier medical facility, the St. Judes Childrens Hospital.

Triple Sin Productions was created by Steve Headley and Ashley Wiederstein to provide musical entertainment for charity organizations.

There’s tough competition for the title of worst corporation, but at least this week the honor has to go to Shell and its “parent” Royal Dutch Petroleum.

First the U.S. Supreme Court has taken up the case of Nigerian activists murdered and tortured with Shell’s complicity. The Court is expected to rule that, although corporations have been given constitutional rights through Citizens United and related decisions, they do not bear responsibility for their crimes, or at least not for their crimes abroad.

Second, as if that weren’t enough, six Democratic senators are pleading with the Obama administration not to give Shell new leases to drill for oil in the Arctic. You read that right. John McCain and Sarah Palin were not elected four years ago, but “Drill, Baby, Drill” survives. An oil spill in the icy Arctic, with no deepwater port or roads nearby, could make BP’s gusher in the Gulf look like child’s play.

Tell Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and President Barack Obama not to reward Shell with Arctic oil.
