A Letter From Roxanna Green:

I still have one of the last Mother’s Day cards my daughter, Christina-Taylor Green, gave me.

She was just nine years old when she was murdered in the mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona. She only gave me a few cards, but I cherish them all.

This Mother’s Day — if you can — send a card to your mother. Or give her a call.

But today, I hope you’ll take a minute to stand with moms who won’t hear from their children this Sunday. The moms of Columbine. Virginia Tech. Tucson. Aurora. And Newtown. The moms of the 33 people who are murdered with guns every single day in this country.

Al Qaeda spokesman and potential Bin Laden successor Adam Gadahn recently released a video urging members to take the “golden opportunity” to exploit U.S. gun laws to buy guns and commit terrorist acts on American soil. By leaving gun law loopholes open, we’re effectively assisting al-Qaeda and exposing Americans to this grave threat. But Congress has the power to close these gun law gaps. That’s why we are calling on Congress to require a background check for every gun sale and ensure that the names of those who should be prohibited from buying guns are entered into the background check system. In al-Qaeda’s recent video, U.S.-born member Adam Gadahn announces forcefully, “America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms.” Gadahn promises al-Qaeda’s “lone wolves” that they can purchase these deadly weapons “without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card” at gun shows. Right now, gaps in our nation’s gun laws allow anyone to buy weapons and ammunition without a background check — including, for example, semi- automatic rifles and extended magazines. To make matters worse, the background check system has massive gaps. Not everyone who is legally prohibited from buying a gun has been entered into the background check database — and the “Terror Gap” means that even people on the FBI terrorist watch list can buy guns and explosives without any delay. Ask Congress to close gun law loopholes and the Terror Gap.

Gun Legislation Picking up Steam…

Our efforts to help reduce gun violence continue to pick up steam. Soon after Congress returns the Senate will take up action again on reasonable laws to reduce gun violence. They won’t end gun violence but they sure will help.

We’ll be out there backing a common sense public safety agenda that includes legislation that will:

• Require every gun buyer to pass a criminal background check
• Get military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines off our streets
• Make gun trafficking a federal crime.

Our leaders should act now to make it harder for dangerous people to buy guns and easier for police and prosecutors to stop them. These laws will help with that objective.

We’ll be working in support of our senators, both of whom are strong supporters of these laws, as well as our New Jersey legislators, like Lou Greenwald and Pam Lampitt who have written and sponsored state legislation that will strengthen gun laws in New Jersey.

We’ll also be running our own activities, as well as activities in conjunction with groups like Mayors Against Illegal Guns. These activities will be organized by our newly formed Gun Violence Prevention Action Team. In fact, mark you calendars for Saturday, April 13th for a Gun Violence Day of Action – The next major Day of Action on Preventing Gun Violence will be on Saturday, April 13th where we will join others around the country to do a community candlelight vigil. More information will follow.

Here’s the facts everyone – the vast majority of Americans are in favor of these actions. A recent CBS News poll showed that 92% are in favor of universal background checks for all gun sales. You can’t get 92% of Americans to agree on whether or not the sun is shining on a bright spring day. But to get these things done more than just a handful of activists need to do something. About 20% of the 92% are actively involved. To make this happen the other 70% have to be part of this in some way or it won’t happen. That means we, you, need to take some action.

Here’s a menu of what you can and need to do on top of coming to a rally, and some resources to help you with that:

Why Are These Six Democratic Senators On The Fence About Universal Background Checks?

After axing the assault weapons ban from the Senate’s comprehensive gun violence prevention plan, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is struggling to scrape together enough votes to pass the centerpiece of the plan: universal background checks. Republicans are refusing to vote for it, and even several Democrats in red states are wavering on their support. According to Greg Sargent at the Washington Post, these key votes include Senators Kay Hagan (D-NC), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Mark Pryor (D-AR), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND).

Universal background checks are considered essential to the gun bill. They would close the “gun show loophole” that currently allows anyone to skip a background check if they buy a gun through a private sale. “Private” transactions between individuals or at gun shows are the origin point for 80 percent of guns used in crimes.

ThinkProgress examined data from the home states of six Democratic senators currently on the fence: Arkansas, Indiana, North Carolina, Louisiana, Alaska, and North Dakota. According to the most recent data available, these six states had: 1) 1,462 gun murders in 2010; 2) 351 gun deaths since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre at the end of last year; and 3)widespread support for universal background checks (following the national trend). Meanwhile,152 gun shows are scheduled to take place in these states this year, providing criminals who can’t pass background checks in stores with ample opportunity to stock up on guns. All of the states, with the exception of North Carolina, allow individuals to buy guns at these showswithout any review:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his pro-gun regulation group Mayors Against Illegal Gunsrecently launched an ad blitz to encourage residents in 13 key states to lobby their senators to support the proposal. Sen. Donnelly (D-IN) is reportedly considering “a bipartisan compromise on background checks.”

60 votes?

After months of debate, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced a comprehensive gun reform bill and made it clear that any bill that seeks to address gun violence must require background checks for all gun sales in America.¹

This is a big moment, but it begs an even bigger question: Do we have 60 votes to pass gun reform in the Senate?

Sadly, right now, the answer is no. And that’s where you and I come in.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns is organizing a National Day to Demand Action on March 28th. Senators will be at home for the Easter/Passover recess, and they need to hear from us. We need to attend events, make calls, and come together to make sure our elected officials don’t give in to pressure from the NRA.

The Vice President shared some emotional words with the families and some strong words of praise for the work Mayors Against Illegal Guns has done to keep the pressure on Congress.

It made me feel proud. But it also made me want to get out there and make sure we pass this bill. I hope you will join me.

For months, the gun lobby has peddled the same tired argument that conducting background checks for all gun sales would be “inconvenient.” But under the background checks bill being considered by the Senate (S. 374), if you want to sell a gun, you can simply meet your buyer at a local gun store and the store will conduct the background check.

So, how easy is it to find a gun store?

There are 58,344 federally licensed gun dealers in the United States¹ — that’s nearly twice as many gun dealers as there are post offices.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun violence prevention group chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, will air an advertisement during the Super Bowl calling on Congress to pass universal background checks. The ad is part of the group’s “Demand A Plan” campaign, which focuses on convincing elected officials that stronger gun regulations are needed.

The spot features pictures and voices of children — a harsh reminder of the 20 first-graders killed in December in Newton, Connecticut. The kids single out the National Rifle Association forbacktracking on its earlier support for background checks on all gun sales.

Current U.S. law allows people to buy guns through private sales without undergoing the otherwise-mandatory background check. That means that anyone who finds a firearm through Craigslist — or shops for one at a gun show — can walk away with a weapon undetected. Eighty percent of guns used in crimes seem to have been bought privately, and 40 percent of all gun sales are purchased without a check.

What’s more, universal background checks are widely supported. Just eight percent of the country agrees with the NRA’s position against such a measure; 92 percent support background checks for all. That’s likely to make the Super Bowl ad — which will air “on CBS, the network broadcasting the Super Bowl, in the Washington DC market in the third-quarter break coming out of halftime” — quite popular.

We Demand A Plan to End Gun Violence – NOW! The school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut is a tragedy beyond comprehension. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their loved ones and the community that has been shattered by this horrific act of violence.

President Obama gave a moving speech and promised to take action to prevent future tragedies. But the harsh truth is that we’ve heard this promise before. After Aurora. After Tucson. After Virginia Tech. After Columbine.

Promises are not enough. We need action.

The school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut is a tragedy beyond comprehension. Working together, we can bring about meaningful, commonsense gun reform in this country. One of the most important things you can do is sign and share this petition with as many of your family and friends as possible. We need to show that there is a large movement of people coming together to Demand A Plan!

Why? The man in China had only a knife.

Every time our country faces a gun tragedy, the big gun manufacturers fund the National Rifle Association to kill action in Congress.

This time, we’re doing things differently.Democratic and Republican voters, rural and urban neighbors, and even gun owners are banding together to make this solemn promise:

“I will call the White House and Congress once a month until common-sense gun legislation is passed.”

In a moving speech last night, President Obama declared, “These tragedies must end.” But every time our country faces a gun atrocity like Newtown or Tucson or Aurora, change never arrives.

The kids in Newtown died because they didn’t have the muscle in Washington that the NRA had.

On December 14th, a lone gunman opened fire at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. 26 people were killed, 20 of them six- and seven-year-old children. The shooter’s primary weapon, an AR-15, was previously illegal under the Assault Weapons Ban that Bush allowed to expire in 2004. How many more children have to die before we take action?

We’re all still reeling from the massacre in Connecticut that claimed the lives of 26 people, including 20 six- and seven-year-olds. The shooter’s weapon, an assault rifle, is legal for civilians to purchase in the United States. Rifles like that were originally created for combat purposes — they allow shooters to fire up to 6 bullets a second. One man was able to obtain one and bring it into an elementary school classroom.

A spokesperson for the White House said on Friday that “this isn’t the day” to talk about gun control. But we MUST start talking about it. It may seem like too soon, but for the victims of Newtown, it is far too late.
